High Winds Cause Power Outages Across Black Hills

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Strong winds are causing power outages throughout the Black Hills Electric Cooperative service territory early Friday morning, prompting utility crews to begin restoration efforts in hazardous conditions.

The cooperative issued an update at 4:30am on Jan. 16, noting that the wind is impacting equipment across its six-county region. Residents just south of Rapid City are impacted the most.

High wind warnings remain in effect for much of western South Dakota, including Rapid City and the surrounding areas, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph according to National Weather Service data.

Residents experiencing an outage are directed to report it through the SmartHub mobile app or by calling 800-742-0085. Real-time information regarding the scope of the outages is available on the cooperative’s digital outage map.
