RAPID CITY, S.D. – A powerful storm system is set to bring dangerous winds to western South Dakota, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning for Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecasters warn that strong southwest winds will develop Wednesday ahead of an approaching cold front. Residents can expect sustained winds and gusts ranging from 40 to 60 mph throughout the day. Conditions are expected to deteriorate further Wednesday evening as the front arrives.

The strongest winds are predicted to occur overnight Wednesday, with gusts of 60 to 75 mph likely. The most severe conditions are expected across northwestern South Dakota and along the Interstate 90 corridor.

In addition to the wind, the system will bring precipitation to the region. Light rain is forecast to develop as the front pushes through, changing to snow by Wednesday evening. While little to no snow accumulation is expected on the plains, higher elevations in the northern Black Hills could see 1 to 3 inches.

The combination of falling snow and high winds will likely lead to areas of greatly reduced visibility late Wednesday into Thursday morning. Officials advise drivers to use extreme caution, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles.

The warning remains in effect for northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning.
