CALHOUN COUNTY, IA — A rollover crash Wednesday morning carrying the Iowa Lakes Community College Baseball team left several injured. As of this morning the singular fatality has been named as former Post 22 player and Iowa Lakes Outfielder Carter “Tater” Johnson.
According to investigators, the mass casualty was caused when the bus, en route to its next series, veered off of Highway 4 at a curve into a ditch. At least 30 were injured as a result of the incident, with many requiring immediate hospitalization. According to recent reports, the injured persons are in stable condition.
Johnson, a native of South Dakota, played for Rapid City as far back as at least 2022. Troy Larson, Iowa Lakes athletic director, said that Johnson “impacted our campus, both within our halls, in the classrooms, as well as on the playing field. We’re heartbroken for this tragedy”.
“We’re heartbroken over the loss of Tater Johnson, yet we celebrate his vibrant spirit and the profound impact he had on so many lives,” said Post 22 in a Facebook post this morning, “Let’s stand together in support and prayer of his family and friends, holding onto the hope and resilience that defined his remarkable young life”.
Johnson was 19 years old at the time of the accident, and a vigil was held Wednesday night at Iowa Lakes Community College in his memory.
