HILL CITY, SD — On Saturday, a fatal rollover crash took the lives of two after a 2003 Toyota 4Runner appears to have overcorrected and experienced several rollovers before coming to a rest in a ditch while headed southbound on US 385, around 10 miles north of Hill City.

The incident took the lives of Echo Orion Calatrello, a 22-year-old woman from Sturgis and Nicholas Lord Jackson, Jr., a 22-year-old man from Deadwood. Both were not wearing their seatbelts at the time, according to official reports, and were launched from their vehicle where they were both fatally wounded.

In the aftermath of the horrifying incident, the families of Calatrello and Jackson both mourn their loss. “Echo was the light in every room she entered. Her bubbly personality and infectious laugh touched so many lives. She had a way of making people feel seen, loved, and uplifted — even on their toughest days,” said friend Kayla Kadrmas. Kinsy Selby, friend to Jackson said “Nick was truly one of a kind. He was a total goofball who could make anyone laugh without even trying. He had a way of turning the hardest days into lighter ones simply by being himself. He was the friend you could call at any hour”.

Both families of the deceased are now calling for aid from their communities in paying for funeral expenses in the wake of the tragedy. Both have started a gofundme to cover the great financial burden which has been unexpectedly forced onto both families. “Funeral and memorial expenses are an unexpected burden during this already devastating time. The costs for a proper service — including the funeral home arrangements, casket or urn, transportation, burial/cremation fees, and a gathering to celebrate her life — can quickly add up to thousands of dollars.” reads one campaign.
