Eugene C. Burrer, 65, rural Adams County Farmer/Rancher, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025.
Eugene Charles Burrer was born April 7, 1960 to Kent and Emma (Sittner) Burrer in Hettinger, ND. A few years later, his father passed away and his mother married Don Melling, they then moved to the family farm. This is where Eugene gained his love for farming.
Eugene attended Hettinger Public School through the 12 grade where he participated in wrestling and FFA. After high school, Eugene attended NDSU where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Mechanization. He then returned home to the family farm. Eugene helped coach JH Girls Volleyball and this grew his passion for playing and watching volleyball until his passing. He was an avid Hettinger Black Devils and now Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawks fan who rarely missed any home games. Eugene was active in the Hettinger Jaycee’s, the Hettinger Equity Board of Directors, West River Breeders and numerous other organizations.
Eugene was a very social person and liked by everyone he met. He was a self proclaimed genius, always pursuing knowledge. His nephews grew up knowing him as “Gene Genius”. He would make his nephews his famous “genius stew” and would tell them with every bite they would become smarter and smarter! Eugene loved spending time and working alongside his brothers and nephews.
Eugene is survived by his mother, Emma Melling, sister Sherri Zimmerman, brothers, David (Renee) Burrer and Donald (LeiLani) Melling, Jr. and nephews, Alex and Brady Burrer, Kolson, Kolby and Kaison Melling and Sampson, his new puppy.
Eugene was preceded in death by his birth father, Kent Burrer, his father Donald Melling, Sr., his grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and his furry friends, Slick, Jake and Klowny.
Service of Remembrance for Eugene were held December 6, 2025, at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger, ND. Rev. Galen Strand officiated and burial followed at the Hettinger Cemetery.
