MARTIN, SD – The Lakota Times, a foundational voice for Indigenous news in South Dakota and beyond, has officially ceased publication.
The announcement was made via the newspaper’s website, stating, “Due to unforeseen circumstances and health issues, the Lakota Times has ceased publication following the January 14th, 2026 issue.”
In a formal statement, Connie L. Smith, the owner, publisher, and editor of the Lakota Times, informed the public that all automatically renewing subscriptions have been cancelled and readers will no longer be charged monthly fees.
“We would like to thank our readers and donors for your years of support,” Smith said. “If you have any questions regarding your account, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”
The Lakota Times was originally founded by the late Tim Giago, with the first edition published on July 9, 1981. The paper served as a vital source of information for the Oyate, focusing on tribal government, culture, and community events.
The publication underwent changes throughout its history. In the mid-1990s, it transitioned into Indian Country Today. However, the Lakota Times name was later revived in October 2004 by editor Amanda Takes War Bonnett. Smith has steered the publication as owner and editor for more than a decade, maintaining its presence in the Rapid City region.
Community members have noted the closure as “another sign of the times” for the industry, marking the conclusion of “five decades of bringing the Oyate news.” The loss of the Lakota Times leaves a void in the media landscape of Western South Dakota, where it served as a primary record of Lakota life and advocacy for nearly 45 years.
