RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Aviationist has reported that B-1B Lancer strategic bombers based at Ellsworth Air Force Base were deployed recently in action against Iranian military sites.
Senator John Thune commented “The United States is fortunate to rely on the talented and dedicated Americans who defend our nation, including the airmen at Ellsworth AFB who continue to demonstrate an unmatched ability to generate and deliver combat power with global reach. Continuing to pray for the safety of all of our service members as they carry out their missions.”
The long-range missions from Rapid City were confirmed by U.S. officials following a live press conference by General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The strikes targeted Iranian ballistic missile sites and command and control centers.
Aviation enthusiasts tracked the bombers, using callsigns Bone 01, Bone 02, and Bone 03, as they departed South Dakota and crossed the Atlantic. Supported by aerial refueling tankers along the route, the Ellsworth-based aircraft conducted the strikes before returning to the United States.
