Rapid City, SD — Elevate Rapid City announces that President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Johnson will step into a new role as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Brazos Partnership.
Johnson’s departure marks the close of a highly impactful six-year chapter defined by bold vision, collaborative leadership, and meaningful progress for the Rapid City region. During his tenure, Johnson guided the historic merger of the Rapid City Economic Development Partnership, Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, and the Black Hills Business Development Center, forming a unified organization positioned to drive long-term economic vitality.
Under Johnson’s leadership, Elevate Rapid City advanced major initiatives including the launch of the David Lust Accelerator, the Emergency Bridge Loan Program, Elevate Magazine, and two successful multi-million-dollar capital campaigns. During this time, the organization also supported wage growth exceeding $1,000 per week, strengthened labor force participation beyond the national average, secured $200 million in housing infrastructure funding, and helped recruit and expand dozens of companies while advancing workforce and leadership programs across the region.
As Johnson departs, he leaves behind a strong organization, a clear strategic direction, and a dedicated staff ready to continue advancing Elevate Rapid City’s mission, elevating the Rapid City region for all. Looking ahead, Elevate Rapid City’s team will continue driving key initiatives, including the Innovation District, expanded workforce development efforts, and Build to Scale–aligned entrepreneurship programs, while actively advocating for pro-business policies, promoting sustainable economic growth, and keeping our investors at the forefront of all we do.
Johnson’s final day with Elevate Rapid City will be January 23, and he will officially begin his new role on February 1. Elevate Rapid City will share additional information regarding the President and CEO search in the coming weeks.
