BLACK HILLS, SD — The wildfire reported at 1:15 pm yesterday, dubbed the “Cosmos” fire has reportedly been contained to a “less than one acre” area through the cooperation of various state, federal, and local agencies as of 9:00 am this morning.
According to word from the Johnson Siding VFD, the fire started off Highway 16, approximately 2.5 miles north of Keystone. Though information on the fire continues to be unclear, risk of a widespread wildfire prompted immediate response from several fire departments, including the Battle Creek Fire Department, Hill City VFD, Johnson Siding VFD, Rapid City Fire Department, Rapid Valley VFD, and Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, along with state and federal agencies in SD State State Wildland Fire and the United States Forest Service.
“Due to the rapid response from several agencies and the coordination by dispatchers, the fire was held to less than an acre”, said the Johnson Siding VFD on the incident. According to reports, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but is currently being investigated.
