RAPID CITY, SD — The City of Rapid City is seeking public comments on a proposed recommendation to utilize $505,000 in FY 2026 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding allocations for renovations and upgrades to the Red Pesek Field.

The Red Pesek Field is an aging baseball field located at the corner of East New York Street and Herman Street.  The renovation work would restore the field to safe, playable conditions for youth baseball.

The City’s Legal and Finance Committee will consider recommendations at its February 11 meeting and at the Rapid City Common Council meeting on February 17. Deadline for public comments is 4 p.m. February 16 and can be directed in writing to the Community Enrichment Division, 300 Sixth Street, via email to Michelle.Schuelke@rcgov.org or by phone at 605-394-4181.

“Under the proposed recommendation, the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department would revitalize the field and utilize the facility as a key component of the City’s youth sports options,” said Michelle Schuelke, Community Enrichment Division Manager for the City of Rapid City.  “The field has been used for decades by youth in Rapid City and the years and use have taken a toll on the facilities and field.

“These upgrades, if approved, would provide a much-improved recreational outlet for youth for years to come in a core area of our community.”

Improvements called for in the recommendation proposal would focus on safety, playability, accessibility and appearance, including removal of hazardous features, installation of above-ground dugouts with secure fencing, conversion of the infield and bullpens to synthetic turf, upgrading of ADA-accessible walkways and restrooms, and construction of a seat wall to enhance aesthetics and manage drainage.
