Belle Fourche Man Killed in Single Vehicle Crash Near Platte

PLATTE, S.D. – A 21-year-old man from Belle Fourche died Saturday night in a single vehicle crash southwest of Platte, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety reported the crash occurred at 11:22 p.m. on SD Highway 1804, approximately 10 miles southwest of Platte in Charles Mix County.

Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2023 GMC Sierra K1500 Denali was traveling southbound on SD Highway 1804 when the vehicle left the roadway and entered the ditch off the right shoulder. The vehicle then struck an approach, became airborne and flipped onto its roof.

Authorities stated the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The name of the individual has not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Whether the driver was wearing a seat belt remains under investigation.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash. While the victim was from the Black Hills region near Rapid City, the incident took place in the south-central portion of the state.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. All information released at this time is preliminary.
