Rivers says Bucks won’t shut down Antetokounmpo for season and will play him when he’s healthy

Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers reiterated that the Bucks have no plans on shutting down Giannis Antetokounmpo for the rest of the season. Rivers said Friday the two-time MVP’s return date from a calf strain remains uncertain. Rivers spoke on the issue one day after the trade deadline passed with Antetokounmpo remaining in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo’s future had been the center of attention across the league in the weeks leading up to the deadline. Antetokounmpo hasn’t played since straining his right calf on Jan. 23. The Bucks potentially could help their draft status by continuing to rest Antetokounmpo.

Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo expects to miss extended time after injuring his calf again

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo thinks he will be out for an extended period after hurting his right calf again after a similar injury already caused him to miss eight games earlier this season. Antetokounmpo had his right calf wrapped in the first half of a 102-100 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Antetokounmpo didn’t appear comfortable the rest of the night and left for good with 34 seconds remaining. The two-time MVP said he expected to undergo an MRI on Saturday. Denver’s Aaron Gordon scored 13 points in the first half before sitting out the second half with a right hamstring strain.

Antetokounmpo says lack of chemistry has contributed to Bucks’ recent blowout losses

Giannis Antetokounmpo says chemistry issues may be contributing to the Milwaukee Bucks’ recent penchant for lopsided losses. The Bucks fell 122-102 on Wednesday night to an Oklahoma City team that was missing a handful of rotation players due to injuries. The Bucks have lost four of their last five. Each of their last three losses was decided by at least 18 points. Milwaukee’s string of nine straight playoff appearances is in jeopardy midway through the season. The Bucks are 11th in the Eastern Conference standings. They haven’t won more than two straight games at any point this season.

Packers’ Micah Parsons says he can recover from torn ACL in time to play early next season

Green Bay’s Micah Parsons calls his torn anterior cruciate ligament “the most challenging thing that I think I’ve ever faced as a human.” But the All-Pro defensive end believes he can recover in time to play early next season. Parsons says he hopes to be back for the start of the season, but added that a more realistic goal is “probably like Week 3, Week 4.” Parsons and tight end Tucker Kraft both discussed their recoveries from torn ACLs as the Packers packed up their lockers two days after their 31-27 wild-card playoff loss at Chicago.

Matt LaFleur expects to meet with Packers president Ed Policy soon regarding his future

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur is more interested in talking about his team’s future than his own. LaFleur spoke to reporters Sunday, a day after the biggest playoff collapse in the franchise’s storied history. He says he spoke briefly with team president and CEO Ed Policy on the flight back to Green Bay after the Packers’ 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in an NFC wild-card playoff game Saturday night. But he declined to comment on whether he expected to keep his job after the Packers made their third straight playoff appearance but lost their final five games.

Packers’ Trevon Diggs wants to make the most of his unexpected playoff opportunity

Trevon Diggs couldn’t have imagined a couple of weeks ago that he’d have a chance to make an impact in the playoffs. The 27-year-old cornerback finds himself in this improbable position after the Green Bay Packers claimed him off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys last week. Diggs performed capably while playing nearly half of Green Bay’s defensive snaps in its regular-season finale Sunday. Packers coach Matt LaFleur didn’t rule out the possibility of starting him in their Saturday night wild-card matchup at Chicago.

Packers’ Malik Willis downplays his shoulder issue after delivering huge performance in loss

Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis characterized the shoulder injury that caused him to head to the locker room midway through the fourth quarter Saturday as nothing more than a “tweak.” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Willis could have reentered the game if necessary. The Packers instead opted to keep Willis on the sidelines after Baltimore’s Derrick Henry scored a game-clinching touchdown with less than two minutes left in the Baltimore Ravens’ 41-24 victory. Willis had performed brilliantly while starting in place of the injured Jordan Love.

Henry had three touchdown runs in the first half and then scored again on a 25-yard run with 1:56 left in the game. Ravens rule Lamar Jackson out for Saturday night’s must-win game at Green Bay

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson won’t play Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers due to the back injury that knocked him out of a loss to the New England Patriots last weekend. The Ravens listed Jackson among their inactive players for Saturday’s must-win game. The two-time MVP hadn’t practiced all week and was listed as doubtful on the Ravens’ Thursday injury report. This means neither team will have its starting quarterback available. The Packers announced Friday that Jordan Love wouldn’t be available. Love has been in concussion protocol since absorbing a helmet-to-helmet hit in a loss at Chicago last weekend

This is what it’s come down to for the Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore will miss the playoffs for just the second time in the last eight years unless it wins its final two games on the road and the Pittsburgh Steelers lose Sunday at Cleveland. The Ravens likely will be playing the first of those last two games Saturday night at Green Bay without injured two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson. Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers says he anticipates Giannis Antetokounmpo missing about a month as the two-time MVP recovers from a strained right calf. Initial reports have indicated Antetokounmpo would be out two to four weeks. Rivers suggested Friday that it would likely be on the higher end of that timeline. Rivers emphasized the importance of caution with calf issues to avoid the risk of a player getting hurt more severely. Antetokounmpo injured his calf in the opening minutes of the Bucks’ 113-109 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

Brandon McManus’ attempt at a game-tying, 64-yard field goal as time expired fell several yards short. Green Bay’s second straight loss dropped the Packers to third place in the NFC North. The Green Bay Packers couldn’t thwart the tush push during the offseason. Now they must try to find a way to stop it in a game. Green Bay proposed a ban on the play during the offseason. The measure was approved by more than two-thirds of the teams but fell two votes short of passage. That has enabled the Philadelphia Eagles to continue using the short-yardage play in their Super Bowl title defense. The Eagles beat the Packers twice last season and face them again Monday night at Lambeau Field.

Packers dealing with unexpected adversity as they prepare to host Eagles

The Green Bay Packers have cause for concern as they spend this week preparing for a Monday night matchup with the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Green Bay still leads the NFC North, but it has reason to worry about an offense that couldn’t finish drives in Sunday’s 16-13 loss to Carolina. It also has to find a way to replace tight end Tucker Kraft, who will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

The Milwaukee Brewers are making the types of mistakes at the plate that they avoided while producing the best regular-season record in the major leagues. No wonder they’re leaving home facing a 2-0 deficit against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series. The Brewers ranked second in the majors in on-base percentage and third in runs and batting average while posting a franchise-best 97-65 regular-season record. But they’ve totaled just five hits through the first two games of this series and mustered only one run in each of them.

Teoscar Hernández and Max Muncy each hit a solo homer as the Dodgers left Milwaukee with a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series, which shifts to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Thursday. Muncy’s 412-foot drive to center field was the 14th homer of his postseason career, breaking the Dodgers record he had shared with Corey Seager and Justin Turner. Yamamoto allowed a home run to Jackson Chourio on the first of his 111 pitches but shut down the Brewers the rest of the way. The right-hander’s complete game was his first in the majors.

More importantly, he was throwing strikes. Misiorowski fired three innings of scoreless relief while reaching at least 100 mph on 31 of his 57 pitches during the Brewers’ 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 of their NL Division Series on Monday night.

Cubs head back home on the brink of elimination after losing 2 straight in Milwaukee

The Chicago Cubs’ hitters aren’t putting enough balls in play, and their pitchers aren’t keeping balls in play. That combination has the Cubs heading back to Chicago on the brink of elimination. Chicago gave up three homers and mustered just one hit after the second inning of a 7-3 loss at Milwaukee on Monday night that gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five NL Division Series. The Cubs must win two straight in Chicago on Wednesday and Thursday to send the series back to Milwaukee for a deciding Game 5 on Saturday.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio returned to the lineup and hit a three-run homer in Game 2 of an NL Division Series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday night after tightness in his right hamstring caused him to exit the series opener. Chourio sent an 0-2 pitch from Daniel Palencia over the center-field wall with two outs in the fourth inning. Chourio’s 419-foot drive extended Milwaukee’s lead to 7-3. Fast start propels Brewers to 9-3 victory over Cubs in NLDS opener

Jackson Chourio went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs in the first two innings before departing with a hamstring injury as the Milwaukee Brewers trounced the Chicago Cubs 9-3 in their NL Division Series opener. Chourio became the first player to have three hits in the first two innings of a playoff game. But his availability for Monday’s Game 2 in the best-of-five series is unclear. Chourio, who missed a month of the regular season with a strained right hamstring, left with tightness in that hamstring after beating out a bases-loaded infield single.

Brewers’ improved lineup could help them stop their recent history of playoff misfortune

Pitching generally has carried the Milwaukee Brewers as they’ve made their run of seven postseason appearances over the last eight years. This year, they might have the type of offense that can produce more playoff success. Milwaukee posted the best record in the major leagues this year while having the second-best earned run average. But the Brewers also scored 806 runs, their most since 1999, to rank third in the majors. They’ve done it without hitting many homers and instead relying on plate discipline and speed.

The Cincinnati Reds are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2020 after overtaking the New York Mets for the National League’s third and final wild card on the season’s final weekend. Cincinnati got to the postseason with plenty of help from the stumbling Mets. The Reds blew an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot on their own Sunday when they squandered a 2-0 lead in a 4-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. But they still earned the NL’s last postseason spot when the Mets lost 4-0 to the Miami Marlins.

One playoff berth remains up for grabs heading into the final day of Major League Baseball’s regular season. Cincinnati will earn the National League’s third and final wild card if the Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers or the New York Mets lose at Miami on Sunday. A New York victory and Cincinnati loss would send the Mets to the playoffs instead. The Reds and Mets have identical 83-78 records. Cincinnati owns the head-to-head tiebreaker because it won four of its six meetings with the Mets this season.
