Matthews passes Mats Sundin to set Maple Leafs’ franchise record with his 421st career goal

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews scored twice in the second period against the New York Islanders on Saturday night to pass Mats Sundin and set the franchise record for career goals with 421. His first goal tied Sundin at 420 when Matthews entered the offensive zone past Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield, shifted the puck from his backhand to his forehand and slid it past goaltender David Rittich at 9:30 of the second period. It tied the score 1-1. Just 7:49 later, Matthews broke the record with his second of the game to put Toronto ahead, burying a cross-ice feed from Bobby McMann on a one-timer. Matthews is fourth all time in franchise points with 760, trailing Sundin (987), Darryl Sittler (916) and Dave Keon (858).

Dylan Guenther has 1st career hat trick to send Mammoth to 7-2 victory over Isles

Dylan Guenther had his first career hat trick and added an assist and the Utah Mammoth topped the New York Islanders 7-2. Nick Schmaltz scored twice and added an assist, Clayton Keller and Mikhail Sergachev each had a goal and two assists, while Lawson Crouse and Barrett Hayton each had two assists. Karel Vejmelka returned from a two-game absence and finished with 20 saves as the Mammoth snapped a two-game skid. Cal Ritchie and Matthew Schaefer scored for New York, and Max Shabanov had two assists.

Lee scores early, Rittich makes 27 saves in Islanders 2-0 win over Rangers

David Rittich made 27 saves for his ninth career shutout, Anders Lee scored less than a minute into the game, and the New York Islanders blanked the New York Rangers 2-0. Lee’s unassisted goal 58 seconds in extended his point streak to five games as the Islanders won their second straight. Simon Holmstrom added an empty-netter with 16 seconds left in the game. Igor Shesterkin finished with 24 saves but the Rangers were shut out for the eighth time this season. The Islanders placed starting goaltender Ilya Sorokin on injured reserve prior to the game.

Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer gets 1st NHL goal in loss to Capitals

Matthew Schaefer won’t soon forget his first NHL goal. The 18-year-old defenseman and top overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft dove headfirst into the moment, literally. Schaefer found a loose puck after a scramble in front of the net and lunged forward, poking it past Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson at 4:28 of the third period in the Islanders’ 4-2 loss Saturday night.
