A man charged with killing his wife and another man testified about the day his wife was brutally stabbed to death. Brendan Banfield is charged with aggravated murder in the 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at his home in northern Virginia. He has pleaded not guilty and could face life in prison if convicted. Juliana Peres Magalhães, the family’s au pair with whom he had a relationship, also testified in the case after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. His testimony contradicts the au pair’s statements in the case that the two plotted a ruse to kill Ryan and Christine Banfield.

Judge finds Virginia Democrats’ redistricting resolution illegal

A Virginia judge has ruled that a proposed constitutional amendment letting Democrats redraw the state’s Congressional maps is illegal. Tazewell Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley Jr. says lawmakers’ proposed constitutional amendment was invalid due to a technicality under state law that says such proposals must be passed and published by the clerk’s office at least three months before a general election. Lawmakers advanced their mid-decade redistricting resolution in October, less than a week before their statewide races. The ruling threatens Democrats’ efforts to pick up more U.S. House seats in the state in November.

Abigail Spanberger becomes Virginia’s 1st female governor in historic inauguration

Abigail Spanberger is set to become Virginia’s first female governor after centuries of men holding the state’s top office. The Democrat’s inauguration happens around noon Saturday outside the state Capitol. Spanberger defeated Republican Winsome Earle-Sears to succeed Gov. Glenn Youngkin, also a Republican. It marks a new chapter as Democrats pull the levers of power in Virginia while Republicans run neighboring Washington. Also being sworn in are Democrats Ghazala F. Hashmi, the first Muslim woman to serve in statewide office in the U.S., and Jay Jones, who is the first Black person elected as top prosecutor in the former capital of the Confederacy.

Husband charged in double homicide after having affair with au pair is going on trial in Virginia

A Virginia man who had a relationship with a Brazilian au pair is going on trial in the killings of his wife and another man. Brendan Banfield is charged with aggravated murder in the February 2023 killings of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at a home in northern Virginia. Prosecutors argue the killings stem from a catfishing scheme in which Banfield lured Ryan to the house and staged it to look like he and the family’s au pair shot a predator in defense. Not all officials investigating the case believe Banfield catfished Ryan. Banfield’s attorney says that officials are searching for evidence to fit their theory of the elaborate scheme.

What will Virginia’s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin do next? He’s not ready to tell

Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia is leaving office next month. Youngkin says he’s still focusing on his work as governor and isn’t getting distracted by his political future. Youngkin won a competitive race for governor in 2021 by keeping hard-right Republicans energized while courting swing voters. Pundits added Youngkin’s name to a list of presidential prospects for a post-Donald Trump Republican Party. That party hasn’t happened. Now, Republicans and Democrats are debating whether Youngkin can still be the GOP’s next presidential nominee following statewide losses last month.

Virginia gubernatorial candidates debate trans youth rights as LGBTQ+ voters weigh a fraught moment

The rights of trans youth could be a factor Virginia’s 2025 gubernatorial election and legislative control in Richmond. Republican Winsome Earle-Sears opposes the rights of trans kids at school. Democrat Abigail Spanberger has largely avoided the subject. Each candidate is trying to cast the other as the extremist on the issue. LGBTQ+ Virginians have been grappling with what it means to be queer and trans in a moment where their identities are thrust into statewide and national politics. Other Virginians, meanwhile, worry about its impact on their children.

Obama to campaign with Spanberger and Sherill in high stakes governor’s races

Former President Barack Obama will campaign alongside Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill in the final stretch of their statewide campaigns for governor in Virginia and New Jersey. Spanberger and Sherill’s campaigns said in Tuesday news releases that Obama will campaign with both candidates at Nov. 1 rallies. Obama’s appearance in the final stretch of Virginia and New Jersey’s gubernatorial races comes on the heels of his endorsement of both candidates last week. Spanberger is facing Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in the race for Virginia governor. Sherill is up against GOP nominee Jack Ciattarelli in New Jersey.

Virginia AG candidates Jay Jones and Jason Miyares clash over violent rhetoric in feisty debate

Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares and former Democratic Del. Jay Jones have faced off on the debate stage in Virginia’s attorney general’s race. Jones’ text messages suggesting political violence against a prominent Republican back in 2022 took center stage. Miyares described the incident as disqualifying. Jones apologized and sought to change the narrative, saying other politicians have used extreme rhetoric. Virginia is one of just two states electing candidates for statewide office this November. The White House’s recent actions also have an outsize impact in a state filled with federal employees and military personnel.

Republican Winsome Earle-Sears is on the defensive in Virginia’s race for governor

Republican Winsome Earle-Sears says she’s running her campaign for Virginia governor like a military-style operation. And at this point, a few months away from the November election, it’s looking like a campaign on the defensive. The lieutenant governor is facing a Democratic Abigail Spanberger, a former congresswoman who has more campaign money and a unified party behind her. Earle-Sears has replaced a pastor with little political experience who had been her campaign manager. And her team has failed to gain traction with big money donors. An Earle-Sears victory would make her the first Black woman in U.S. history to serve as a governor.

Virginia judge bars Youngkin’s university board appointments rejected by Senate Democrats

A judge has ordered that eight university board members tapped by Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin should be removed from their posts. His order is a victory for Virginia Senate Democrats who rejected the appointees in a June committee vote. Now the appointees will be immediately severed from their board seats at the University of Virginia, George Mason University and the Virginia Military Institute. The case comes amid the White House’s effort to reshape higher education, with a focus on DEI. Universities in Virginia have become a groundswell for political tension between academic leaders and the federal government, with boards at the center of those battles.

Child’s interview can’t be used in her father’s trial in killings of wife and other man, judge rules

A Virginia judge has denied prosecutors’ motion to have an interview of a man’s child be used as evidence in his trial in a double-killing case. Brendan Banfield is accused of plotting with an au pair to kill his wife and another man in February 2023. On Friday, the judge said that the interview could not be used because a child’s interview would be admissible only if the child was being directly victimized by the parent. In this case, the interview was conducted more than a year before her father was arrested and nearly two years before the child’s father was charged with child abuse. The judge also has denied Banfield’s motions to remove the lead prosecutor of the case and to quash the indictment.

Democrats in Virginia have a hefty fundraising advantage heading into November general election

Democrats in Virginia have built up a hefty fundraising advantage for their effort to reclaim the governor’s mansion in November’s general election. The fall contests are seen as a bellwether for the party in power in Washington ahead of next year’s midterms. Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA spy turned congresswoman, has a more than 2-to-1 fundraising advantage over her Republican opponent for governor, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Both were unopposed for their party’s nominations and can pivot toward November without having to overcome a primary challenge. Virginia is one of two states that host statewide elections this year. Democrats’ outsized fundraising lead may reflect Democratic enthusiasm and the party’s ability to push voters to the polls.

Democrats squaring off in Virginia primaries say one name a lot: Trump

Democrats in Virginia are holding primary elections Tuesday, and one name is getting talked about a lot: President Donald Trump. The White House’s onslaught of changes impacting Virginia has been fodder for their campaigns, particularly in the nomination contest for attorney general. It comes as Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, a Republican, is running for reelection. Democrats are not making it easy for him. If they are not lamenting Trump, they are criticizing Miyares for not using his position to defend Virginians from the president.

A Virginia Democrat hunts for votes in rural pockets where MAGA has strengthened its grip

Democrat Abigail Spanberger often campaigns in rural Virginia districts that President Donald Trump won by large margins. In the general election to be Virginia’s next governor, she is competing for voters in places where Democrats have struggled in recent elections. Spanberger’s efforts to gain ground in ruby-red parts of Virginia come as Democrats have nationally shown more interest in small-town America. The terrain may be new for Democrats nationally but it’s familiar ground for Spanberger. She hopes to benefit from growing concern about the impact of Trump’s policies on rural areas.
