Indiana adds to celebration as football champs take victory lap and basketball team beats Purdue

Indiana Hoosiers fans got their dream doubleheader Tuesday night. First, they watched college football’s new national champions take one more victory lap. Then they saw Indiana’s basketball team take its cue by keeping the momentum rolling and holding off its top rival, No. 12 Purdue, for the squad’s biggest win of the season. For first-year coach Darian DeVries, it was his first glimpse of the rivalry and Assembly Hall at full throttle. And he credited those raucous fans with playing a key role in the latest chapter of Bloomington’s storybook sports year.

Hoosiers receive hero’s welcome in return to Bloomington as football national champions

The Indiana Hoosiers were ready to party Tuesday night, and hundreds of loyal fans joined them when they arrived back on campus in Bloomington. Turning out in freezing temperatures and brutally cold wind chills, fans, players and coaches celebrated college football’s implausible national champions. Fans chanted “Hoo, hoo, hoo, Hoo-siers,” as the team buses arrived at Indiana’s practice facility. Parking lots filled up at Indianapolis International Airport with fans hoping to greet the team, and some ended up following the buses in their card as the players were escorted by police back to campus.

Braden Smith leads 2nd-half charge in No. 5 Purdue’s 79-72 comeback victory over Iowa

Braden Smith scored all 16 of his points in the second half and tied the Big Ten record for assists in conference play, and No. 5 Purdue overcame a nine-point to beat Iowa 79-72 on Wednesday night. Trey Kaufman-Renn added 12 points, Fletcher Loyer had 11 and Oscar Cluff 10 to help the Boilermakers (16-1, 6-0 Big Ten) win their eighth straight game. They have won their first six conference games for only the fifth time since 1940. Smith finished the game with 478 assists in league games — the same number former Michigan State player Cassius Winston had. Bennett Stirtz had 19 points to lead Iowa (12-5, 2-4). Kael Combs added 16 points.

Tough, motivated defenses headline high-stakes Peach Bowl between No. 1 Indiana and No. 5 Oregon

Indiana linebacker Isaiah Jones insists there’s no real secret to the Hoosiers defensive success. They prepare hard. They follow the coaches’ instructions. They stick to the fundamentals. And they trust everyone to do their jobs. It’s as old-school as it gets, which is hardly a surprise in coach Curt Cignetti’s program. But No. 1 Indiana has reached Friday night’s Peach Bowl against No. 5 Oregon one win away from reaching its first national championship game because the Hoosiers remain motivated to prove something to themselves — and the college football world.

Colts need to start contemplating future following playoff elimination

Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen wants to stay focused on the present. There’s still one game left on the 2025 schedule after all, meaning Indy still could snap a six-game losing streak and finish above .500. But after becoming the first team in 30 years to start 8-2 and miss the playoffs, the Colts should use this week to start pondering fixes for next season and a future that likely doesn’t include 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers. No, Steichen doesn’t want to be known as the guy who pulled the plug on his longtime friend’s 18-year career. Yet it’s a decision he knows he’ll have to make.

Philip Rivers is happy he got 3 ‘bonus games’ even if he’s made his last start for the Colts

Philip Rivers knows he may have made the last start of his improbable comeback. Rivers ended a five-year retirement to rejoin the quarterback-needy Indianapolis Colts at age 44. But he couldn’t stop the Colts’ losing streak. Although he gave the Colts a chance to win two out of his three games, he went 0-3 as a starter. With one meaningless game left, the Colts may turn to Anthony Richardson or rookie Riley Leonard as the starter. Rivers says even if he had known the outcome, he’d do it again. He says it was “an absolute blast” to play what he called “three more bonus games.”

Trevor Lawrence runs for 2 scores as Jaguars close in on AFC South title with 23-17 win over Colts

The Jacksonville Jaguars have moved within one victory of their first AFC South title since 2022. Trevor Lawrence ran for two scores, Cam Little kicked a tiebreaking 42-yard field goal with 6:58 left, and the Jaguars beat the Indianapolis Colts 23-17 on Sunday. The Jags won their seventh straight game one day after two-time defending division champ Houston beat the Los Angeles Chargers to remain in contention for the title. Jacksonville’s Liam Coen became the first coach in NFL history to take over a four-win team and win 12 games the next season. The Colts’ 44-year-old quarterback, Philip Rivers, fell to 0-3 since he ended a five-year retirement.

Trevor Lawrence and AFC South-leading Jaguars seek season sweep of skidding Colts

The skidding Jacksonville Jaguars sit atop the AFC South and they’re seeking a season sweep of the skidding Indianapolis Colts. First-year coach Liam Coen’s team has won six straight games and leads Houston by one game in the division. The Colts topped the division for the first half of the season but have lost five straight and six of seven. Indy’s nosedive began when quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a left leg injury. Then Jones tore his right Achilles tendon during the Colts’ first loss to the Jags. Indy also has a banged-up secondary going up against red-hot Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Philip Rivers starts strong, but his late Pick-6 proves costly to Colts’ playoff hopes in 48-27 loss

Quarterback Philip Rivers came out of retirement to lead the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs. Two games into his comeback, their postseason hopes barely exist. While the 44-year-old grandfather gave the home fans plenty to cheer about in the first 3 1/2 quarters, San Francisco linebacker Dee Winter made Rivers pay for a late miscue by returning an interception 74 yards for a touchdown with 3:26 to play to seal a 48-27 victory at Indianapolis — and perhaps the Colts’ postseason fate.

Brock Purdy throws career high 5 TD passes and leads 49ers to 5th straight win, 48-27 over the Colts

Brock Purdy threw a career-high five touchdown passes and Dee Winters returned an interception 74 yards for a score to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 48-27 victory at Indianapolis. Purdy was 25 of 34 for 295 yards with one interception as Christian McCaffrey had 146 total yards and two scores. The 49ers won their fifth straight to stay in the chase for the NFC’s top seed one day after clinching a playoff spot by virtue of Detroit’s loss to Pittsburgh. But 44-year-old Philip Rivers sure didn’t make it easy on San Francisco in his second game back after a five-year layoff. He was 23 of 35 for 277 yards, two TDs before throwing the later interception to seal it. Indy’s playoff hopes continued to fade with their fifth straight loss.

The last time Philip Rivers suited up inside Lucas Oil Stadium, he and his Indianapolis Colts teammates celebrating clinching a playoff spot. A lot has changed in those five years. Rivers left the NFL, started coaching high school football in Alabama, became a grandfather and shocked the world by coming out of retirement and nearly leading the Colts to a victory last week in Seattle. He’s playing for an old friend, coach Shane Steichen, he’s with a franchise under new ownership. On Monday night, he’ll also play in front of a near capacity home crowd against San Francisco. The Indianapolis Colts have cleared quarterback Anthony Richardson to start practicing but will continue to keep Philip Rivers as the starter. The move opens the door for Richardson to return from injured reserve before the end of this season. But coach Shane Steichen said Thursday that Richardson wouldn’t be activated for Monday night’s crucial game against San Francisco. Richardson has been out since mid-October after fracturing an orbital bone near his eye during a freak accident in pregame warmups. Steichen said he was cleared because the bone has healed but that Richardson is still dealing with some vision limitations.

Philip Rivers wanted one more shot at winning that elusive Super Bowl ring. So the 44-year-old grandfather and Hall of Fame semifinalist is coming out of retirement and rejoining the Indianapolis Colts. Just hours after team officials announced they’d signed Rivers to the practice squad, the eight-time Pro Bowler told reporters he’s eager to take his first NFL snaps since 2020 and hopes to start Sunday’s crucial game at Seattle. Coach Shane Steichen says it’s possible Rivers could earn the job. Rivers says “I know there’s risk involved, what may or may not happen, but the only way to find out is going for it.”

Colts sign 44-year-old Philip Rivers to practice squad with 2 quarterbacks injured, AP source says

The Indianapolis Colts signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers to the practice, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team had not yet made an official announcement. Rivers took his last NFL snap with the Colts in a playoff loss following the 2020 season. He announced his retirement in January 2021. The move comes less than 24 hours after Colts coach Shane Steichen confirmed Indy’s starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, would miss the rest of this season with a torn right Achilles tendon and that backup Riley Leonard injured his right knee.

Jones returned to the rainy sideline with a walking boot. Steichen acknowledged after the game the initial diagnosis was not promising.

Fernando Mendoza’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt gave No. 2 Indiana the lead midway through the third quarter and the Hoosiers’ stingy defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way to beat No. 1 Ohio State 13-10 for their first Big Ten championship since 1967 while likely locking up the top seed in the College Football Playoff. The Hoosiers extended the best record in school history to 13-0, and are poised to claim the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time ever. They did it by snapping a 30-game losing streak to the Buckeyes that stretched to 1988 and by ending major college football’s longest winning streak at 16 games. Despite losing Caitlin Clark and other key players to injury, Fever still reach WNBA semifinals

The Indiana Fever defied the odds. They made it here, to the WNBA semifinals, despite losing Caitlin Clark in mid-July with a groin injury and four other players with season-ending injuries along the way. They made it by rallying in the final minute in a decisive Game 3 at Atlanta to win their first playoff series in a decade. And now they’ll try to defy the odds again starting Sunday in Las Vegas when they square off with the league’s hottest team. How have they done it? With grit, resilience and an uncanny ability to adapt on the fly.

Here’s how a penalty for leverage cost the Broncos a game against the Colts

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton sounded content to let others debate Sunday’s leverage call against linebacker Dondrea Tillman. Payton wanted no part of it. And neither did the rest of the Broncos. Tillman was flagged for leverage on a missed 60-yard field-goal attempt by the Colts’ Spencer Shrader. The penalty allowed Shrader to kick again from 45 yards with no time left and the Colts won 29-28. Quarterback Bo Nix says the Broncos made plenty of mistakes that put the game in officials’ hands. Payton didn’t dispute that Tillman committed the infraction, which involves using another player to vault into the air.

Spencer Shrader converts from 45 yards after penalty on 60-yard miss and Colts beat Broncos 29-28

Spencer Shrader made a 45-yard field goal with no time left after the Broncos were penalized for leverage on his missed 60-yard try, and the Indianapolis Colts beat Denver 29-28 for their first 2-0 start since 2009. Trailing by two with 3:15 left, the Colts played conservatively on their final drive, with Jonathan Taylor running the ball seven times and Daniel Jones throwing only one pass. Those plays netted 26 yards and set up Shrader’s attempt from midfield that missed short and right. But Dondrea Tillman was flagged for leverage — using another player to vault himself into the air to try to block the kick. The 15-yard personal-foul penalty put Indy well within Shrader’s range.

Colts GM believes QB Anthony Richardson will still be a part of team’s future

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard still believes Anthony Richardson will be part of the franchise’s long-term future. In fact, he still considers Richardson a potential franchise quarterback. Eight days after coach Shane Steichen announced that Daniel Jones had won the starting job for Indy’s season opener against Miami, Ballard insisted on Wednesday the franchise hasn’t turned the page on Richardson. Ballard says Richardson is still capable of realizing the potential the Colts saw when they selected him No. 4 overall in the 2023 draft.

Tyrese Haliburton hosts youth basketball camp as recovery from Achilles tendon injury continues

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton was back on the basketball court and back on his feet. No, he wasn’t running or shooting. It’s far too early for that just two months into his Achilles tendon rehab. But it was progress. And being at the Indiana Pacers Athletic Center in suburban Indianapolis, surrounded by 300-plus eager youth basketball campers, brought back Haliburton’s million-dollar smile, too. It might be the best medicine he’ll get all year since team officials have ruled him for all of next season.

Fever overcomes Caitlin Clark’s absence and 3 season-ending injuries to stay in WNBA playoff hunt

The Indiana Fever have overcome a barrage of critical injuries to stay in the WNBA playoff hunt. An injured right groin and subsequent bone bruise suffered while recovering have kept two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark out since July 15, and there’s still no timetable for her return. Backup guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson had season-ending injuries in the same game, Aug. 7 at Phoenix. Then Sunday, guard Sophie Cunningham sustained a season-ending knee injury. Still, with nine regular season games remaining, the resilient Fever are somehow still in playoff position.

Indiana Pacers reward coach Rick Carlisle for NBA Finals run with mulityear contract extension

The Indiana Pacers rewarded coach Rick Carlisle with a multiyear contract extension Tuesday following the team’s surprising run to the NBA Finals. Team officials made the announcement about one month before the Pacers open training camp. The Pacers provided no additional details about contract terms. Carlisle enters this season needing seven wins to become the 11th coach in league history with 1,000 career wins. His 555 career wins with Dallas are a franchise record and his 338 wins with the Pacers are the most in the franchise’s NBA history. He also served as an assistant on Larry Bird’s coaching staff in 1999-2000 — the only other time Indiana reached the Finals.

Colts name Daniel Jones the opening-day starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen says he has selected Daniel Jones as his starting quarterback over Anthony Richardson. Steichen said Tuesday the decision was based in part on consistency and accuracy and that Jones would be the starter for the season, noting that Richardson is just one play away from being needed. Jones reclaims the starting job he lost with the New York Giants last season. He asked for and was granted his release during the season, signed with the Minnesota Vikings and then joined the Colts as a free agent in the offseason.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is considered day-to-day with a dislocated pinkie. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the injury who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday because the team hadn’t yet made an official statement. It’s unclear when Richardson will practice next. Indy did not hold practice Friday and is scheduled to do so Saturday. Richardson was injured on the second possession of the Colts’ preseason game against the Ravens on Thursday night. In other injury news, the Colts closed the day by making a series of moves including placing running back Salvon Ahmed and cornerback Justin Walley on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Bubba Wallace overcame questions and doubts to end 3-year drought with 1st Brickyard 400 win

Bubba Wallace spent three long years questioning everything about his racing world. He saw teammate Tyler Reddick win five times and post three top 10 finishes in NASCAR’s final standings while Wallace endured a 100-race winless streak. He also watched team co-owner Denny Hamlin make regular trips to victory lane while still chasing his elusive Cup title. The drought forced Wallace to contemplate what was wrong and whether he’d continue to be employed in racing. Then he realized there was more to life than racing and everything changed, including a life-altering Brickyard 400 victory Sunday.

Defending champ Kyle Larson returns to Brickyard seeking turnaround

Kyle Larson raced to his third NASCAR Cup victory of the season at Kansas in mid-May then turned his attention to his second and perhaps final attempt at racing’s double — completing all 1,100 miles of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Instead, he was hit with a double whammy. A crash on Lap 92 knocked him out of the 500, relegating him to 24th, and two crashes — the second on Lap 245 — knocked him out in Charlotte, where he finished 37th. Not much has gone right for Lason since then. Now, the defending Brickyard 400 champion is back at Indianapolis Motor Speedway trying to recharge his season.

Caitlin Clark still has no timetable for return following further medical evaluation this week

The Indiana Fever say guard Caitlin Clark still has no time table to return. No further injuries were discovered during medical tests this week. Clark has missed three games since injuring her right groin July 15 against the Connecticut Sun. She traveled with her team to New York for their loss to the Liberty on Tuesday night. The Fever say Clark is continuing to work with team medical staff on her recovery and rehabilitation. Clark’s current injury is the latest in a string of difficulties for the Fever star, which has included a left groin injury and a left quad strain earlier in the season.

Uncertainty continues for Fever and Caitlin Clark as her healthy teammates carry their playoff hopes

The Indiana Fever thought Caitlin Clark’s return might solve their wild first-half ride. They were getting healthy, beating good teams and starting to meet expectations. Then the two-time All-Star got hurt again in the final minute of last Tuesday’s game at Connecticut. Indiana lost by double digits the next night to defending champion New York. Clark missed last weekend’s All-Star festivities in Indianapolis and is likely to sit out Tuesday night when the Fever again play the Liberty. It’s all creating uncertainty about Clark and Indiana’s championship aspirations.

Playing the All-Star Game at home creates special feeling for Kelsey Mitchell, Indiana Fever players

Indiana Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell spent last week tamping down the All-Star excitement. First, she had to play some crucial games. She finally had a chance Friday to show how she felt about playing Saturday’s game on her home court. Her eyes opened wide, the trademark grin stretched across her face and the words started flying out of her mouth. Not all home All-Star Games are created equal. Just ask some of the players who’ve been there and done that. But for the eight-year veteran who finally made her first playoff appearance last year, this one will be special.

Caitlin Clark is still having an impact on WNBA All-Star Game even though she won’t play

Caitlin Clark bounced a ball, joined a team huddle and gave one of her All-Star teammate’s shots a playful thumbs down before gingerly lobbing her own half-court heave Friday. It may be the most demanding action anyone sees out of Clark this weekend in Indianapolis. Nobody envisioned the Indiana Fever’s biggest star missing the All-Star festivities with another injury. But even as Clark sits this one out, she remains the center of attention. From the 30-story, larger-than-life image covering Indianapolis’ JW Marriott Hotel to the wraps around the city’s maze of skywalks, Clarks seems every bit as in demand — maybe even more — than any other All-Star.

NBA players seem to tear their Achilles more frequently nowadays. Why is that?

Kevin Durant and Tyrese Haliburton entered their respective NBA Finals elimination games with strained right calves. Each wound up leaving early with torn right Achilles tendons. Durant missed the whole next season as he recovered from the injury. Now Haliburton, the Indiana Pacers star, could face a similar fate. Predictable? Perhaps. Both knew the risks when they opted to chase a championship, and both wound up paying the price when their tendons gave out on pro basketball’s biggest stage. But Haliburton has one big advantage — he’s only 25 years old.

Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton after surgery to repair torn Achilles tendon: ‘I’d do it again’

Tyrese Haliburton has no regrets about trying to lead the Indiana Pacers to the franchise’s first NBA title, even though his decision to play hurt ended in agony when he tore his right Achilles tendon early in Game 7. The team announced the injury on Monday and Haliburton confirmed it in a social media post. It was a sad ending to Haliburton’s historic postseason run, which included a litany of incredible plays, buzzer-beating winners and occasionally unprecedented stat lines. And now he may miss all of next season. Haliburton says, “I’d do it again, and again after that, to fight for this city and my brothers.”

Indiana Pacers fans arrived at Gainbridge Fieldhouse ready to celebrate their first NBA title. Seven minutes into the game came the hush. As star point guard Tyrese Haliburton fell to the floor in Oklahoma City on Sunday night with what his father, John, later called an Achilles tendon injury, fans gasped as the replay was shown and they saw the anguished look on John Haliburton’s face. The moment may go down as another cruel chapter in the franchise’s long, painful history. Pacers play-by-play announcer Chris Denari told the crowd that Haliburton would want the team to continue to fight.

Pacers avoid 2nd straight home-court playoff exit, routing Thunder to force Game 7

The Indiana Pacers did not let another home-court opportunity slip away Thursday night. Not with a raucous crowd on its feet almost from start to finish, not with Reggie Miller and nearly a dozen former Pacers cheering them on and certainly not with the first NBA title in franchise just two wins away. So the Pacers dug down, fought through injuries and finally played their way. They knocked down 3-pointers, forced turnovers and had the heavily gold-clad crowd doing high-fives between the third and fourth quarters as Indiana extended its season with a 108-91 victory over the the Oklahoma City Thunder. The winner-take-all Game 7 is Sunday night in Oklahoma City

Pacers try to wrap up Eastern Conference finals at home after blowing chance against Knicks on road

The Indiana Pacers wasted one chance to wrap up the Eastern Conference finals. They don’t intend to let it happen again. On Saturday, two days after an uncharacteristically poor performance on the road, the Pacers will get a second shot to clinch a rare NBA Finals appearance, this time at home against the New York Knicks. The Pacers still lead the series 3-2 after Thursday’s demoralizing 111-94 loss. New York will need another strong defensive effort to slow down Tyrese Haliburton and the high-scoring Pacers to extend the series by forcing Game 7 at Madison Square Garden.

Haliburton welcomes back his father with historic performance in Pacers win

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton didn’t get any pregame hugs or handshakes from his father, John, Tuesday night for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. At least not on the court. But the fact that the elder Haliburton was back in the arena — albeit in an upstairs suite instead of a courtside seat — still felt like a win for the two-time All-Star and the Pacers. John Haliburton was forced to watch Indiana’s previous eight postseason games from afar after he ran onto the court and confronted Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo following his son’s last-second shot to eliminate Milwaukee for the second straight year.
