Kenneth Walker III becomes 1st running back to win Super Bowl MVP in 28 years

Kenneth Walker III is running into free agency with a Super Bowl MVP. Walker capped a prolific postseason with another big performance on the ground to help the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 for a championship. While the defense carried Seattle for much of the postseason, Walker was once again the engine of the offense by rushing for 135 yards and adding 26 receiving for his third straight 100-yard game from scrimmage in the postseason. He became the first running back since Terrell Davis 28 years ago to win Super Bowl MVP.

How aggressive free agency moves led the Patriots and Seahawks to the Super Bowl

The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks have defied the odds by reaching the Super Bowl after aggressive free agency spending. The Patriots spent more than $364 million, securing key players like Milton Williams and Stefon Diggs. General Manager Eliot Wolf emphasized a culture shift and intentional player selection. The Seahawks, spending more than $205 million, signed quarterback Sam Darnold and made strategic draft picks, bolstered by trades. Coach Mike Macdonald praised the balance of the draft and free agency. While free agency fueled success, both teams acknowledge it’s not a guaranteed strategy for future seasons.

Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald headline a Hall of Fame class missing Bill Belichick

Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald headlined the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class featuring five players but not six-time Super Bowl winning head coach Bill Belichick. Brees and Fitzgerald both made it in their first year of eligibility in results announced at NFL Honors. Luke Kuechly and Adam Vinatieri made it in their second seasons of eligibility, while Roger Craig was the lone pick among seniors, coaches and contributors. But the class is also noteworthy for Belichick’s absence as at least 11 of the 50 voters opted against giving him a vote despite a career with 333 wins and the most Super Bowl titles of any head coach.

Josh McDaniels returns to Super Bowl for 10th time as an assistant after 2nd head coach firing

When it comes to being an offensive coordinator in the NFL, few coaches have fared better than New England’s Josh McDaniels. As a head coach, it’s been a completely different story. The six-time Super Bowl champion is back in the title game after taking a one-year break from coaching following his second firing as a head coach with no thoughts now on whether he will ever get a third chance.

Two high NFL draft picks, two different paths: Maye and Darnold will face off in Super Bowl

Drake Maye and Sam Darnold came into the NFL in similar fashion as No. 3 overall picks tasked with being franchise quarterbacks for struggling franchises. Their paths to the Super Bowl couldn’t be much different. Maye is looking to join Peyton and Eli Manning as the only quarterbacks selected in the top nine of the last 36 drafts to win a Super Bowl with the team he debuted with as a pro. Darnold could become the first starting quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl after previously playing for four other franchises.

Sam Darnold’s season as a backup with the 49ers helped him reach the Super Bowl

San Darnold’s NFL career had hit rock bottom when he arrived in San Francisco in 2023 after failing at two spots to live up to his high draft billing. Less than three years later, he’s ready to step on football’s biggest stage as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Darnold’s journey from draft bust to Super Bowl quarterback is a remarkable one and it began during his one year with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, when he started only one game and threw only 46 passes.

Unheralded players who could make a big impact in the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl often highlights star players, but lesser-known athletes can make a big impact. Milton Williams helped the Eagles win last year, leading to a contract with New England. Kansas City relied on unsung heroes in previous victories. This Sunday, New England’s Mack Hollins and Seattle’s Drake Thomas could shine. Hollins has been a reliable receiver, while Thomas is a key defensive player. New England’s Craig Woodson and Seattle’s Michael Dickson also have potential to influence the game. New England’s Khyiris Tonga and Seattle’s George Holani might play crucial roles as well.

NFL to play first regular-season game in France with Saints in 2026

The NFL will play its first regular-season game ever in France next season with the New Orleans Saints set to play a game in Paris in 2026. The league announced on Monday the plans to play a game at the Stade de France next season in addition to a multiyear deal to keep playing regular-season games at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The NFL has already announced its first game in Australia next season with the Los Angeles Rams set to host that game, as well as games in Rio de Janeiro, Munich, and three in London.

10 years of NFL Next Gen Stats has changed how the game is watched and played

Anyone watching Caleb Williams’ desperation fourth-down touchdown pass in the divisional round knew how improbable a play it was. Quantifying that was a different story. That’s when the NFL’s Next Gen Stats stepped in with specific details of how far Williams retreated to how far the pass traveled. A sport whose statistics used to be mostly simple ones like yards gained, passes attempted, passes completed and touchdowns now has numbers based on all sorts of advanced statistics thanks to the RFID chips the NFL has placed in the ball and shoulder pads of players and the power of the AWS computers to sift through and analyze them.

NFL’s turf guru has meticulous journey to prepare Levi’s Stadium field for Super Bowl

Nick Pappas’ process for preparing the Super Bowl field started long before the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots started getting ready for the 2025 season. The NFL’s turf guru picked the sod farm that began growing the field for the game about 16 months ago and spent time since then monitoring the progress. The job went into overdrive this month when Pappas and his crew started a monthlong installation and preparation process to make sure the story of the game is about the teams and not the grass.

San Francisco’s star linebacker Fred Warner is out for the 49ers’ playoff game against Seattle. Warner returned to practice this week after a serious ankle injury in October. Coach Kyle Shanahan initially called it a season-ending injury, but hopes Warner could return if the team advances. The 49ers are also hoping to get receiver Ricky Pearsall back this week. Pearsall practiced on a limited basis and is listed as questionable. Safety Ji’Ayir Brown is out against Seattle, while linebackers Dee Winters and Luke Gifford are questionable.

49ers’ Brock Purdy gets another chance at Mike Macdonald’s Seahawks D that shut him down in Week 18

Two of Brock Purdy’s worst performances in an otherwise stellar career came when he matched up against a Mike Macdonald-coached defense. Now thanks to one of his more memorable moments when he led the short-handed San Francisco 49ers to a fourth-quarter comeback in a wild-card win at Philadelphia, Purdy gets another chance against Macdonald’s defense. The 49ers will take on Seattle on Saturday night in a divisional round matchup two weeks after the Seahawks clinched the division title by shutting down Purdy and the San Francisco offense in a 13-3 win.

49ers’ offense goes silent against Seahawks, costing them NFC’s No. 1 seed

San Francisco’s offense had been nearly unstoppable heading into a showdown with Seattle with the No. 1 seed in the NFC at stake. But the 49ers could generate almost nothing against the Seahawks in a 13-3 loss on Saturday night. The defeat means San Francisco will have to open the playoffs on the road in the wild-card round. The Niners will earn the fifth seed and the chance to play the 8-9 winner of the NFC South in the playoffs if the Rams lose or tie against Arizona on Sunday. They would fall to the sixth seed with a trip to Philadelphia or Chicago if Los Angeles wins.

The Seattle Seahawks have secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. Zach Charbonnet scored on a 27-yard run in the first quarter and Seattle shut down the high-powered San Francisco offense in a 13-3 victory over the 49ers on Saturday night. The loss sends the 49ers on the road for the wild-card round next weekend. The Seahawks held the 49ers to 173 yards, their fewest in a regular-season game under coach Kyle Shanahan.

The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers face off in a high-stakes game on Saturday night. The winner secures the top seed in the NFC playoffs, earning a first-round bye and home-field advantage. This rare regular-season matchup has only happened four times since 1975. Both teams have improved their running games recently, with the 49ers averaging 4.69 yards per carry in the past three games. Seattle’s defense aims to pressure 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who has been playing at an MVP level. The game was moved to Saturday, posing scheduling challenges for both teams.

The Chicago Bears suffer a heartbreaking 42-38 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. A last-ditch pass from Caleb Williams to Jahdae Walker falls short, ending their chance for a record seventh late-game comeback. The loss on Sunday night costs them the top seed in the NFC playoffs. Williams moved the Bears 63 yards in just over two minutes, but they couldn’t capitalize from the 2-yard line. The Bears have already clinched the NFC North and can still earn the No. 2 seed. NFL kickers are now making long-distance field goals more frequently, with many kicks exceeding 60 yards. This shift has sparked questions about whether the balls are altered. A rule change this year allows teams to prepare kicking balls before game day, leading to more consistent performance. There have already been four kicks of at least 60 yards this season, close to the single-season record. The new rules have also impacted punts, with average distances increasing. Kickers say the broken-in balls add a few extra yards to their kicks.

49ers cut Jake Moody, place George Kittle on injured reserve

The San Francisco 49ers have waived kicker Jake Moody after he missed two field goals in the season opener. They also placed star tight end George Kittle on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Kittle will miss at least four games. Moody, a 2023 third-round pick, struggled with consistency, leading to his release on Tuesday. Despite a promising start, his performance declined, especially after an ankle injury last season. The 49ers also signed receiver Kendrick Bourne to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million. They currently have open spots on both the 53-man roster and the practice squad.

49ers star Christian McCaffrey questionable for season opener after calf injury

San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey is questionable for the season opener after injuring his calf at practice. Coach Kyle Shanahan said McCaffrey got hurt on Thursday and didn’t practice Friday. His availability for Sunday’s game at Seattle will be a game-time decision. McCaffrey missed most of last season’s training camp with a calf injury and later had knee issues. If he can’t play, the 49ers will likely rely on Brian Robinson, who recently joined the team. Receiver Jauan Jennings is set to play after missing training camp with a calf injury and contract dispute.

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to acquire receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs. The teams will swap sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2027. NFL bans smelling salts, saying product can mask concussion symptoms

The NFL is banning the use of smelling salts during games, citing safety concerns and the potential to mask concussion symptoms. The league sent a memo to teams on Tuesday explaining the decision. The memo references a 2024 FDA warning about the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of ammonia inhalants. The NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended the ban. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle mentioned the ban during an interview, expressing hope for a compromise. However, the memo clearly prohibits any club personnel from providing or supplying these products.

The biggest beneficiary of an extended offseason for the San Francisco 49ers just might have been star running back Christian McCaffrey. A healthy McCaffrey would be a key component for San Francisco to rebound from a 6-11 season.
