New Bills coach Brady fills defensive coordinator job by agreeing to hire Leonhard, AP source says

The Buffalo Bills have reached an agreement to hire Jim Leonhard as their defensive coordinator under new head coach Joe Brady, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Leonhard has yet to sign a contract. ESPN first reported the agreement. The 43-year-old Leonhard spent the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos, including last year as the team’s assistant head coach and defensive pass game coordinator. He is the second Broncos assistant to join Brady’s staff. Pete Carmichael was hired as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator.

Joe Brady turns to former colleague, agreeing to hire Pete Carmichael as Bills offensive coordinator

A person with knowledge of the discussions tells The Associated Press that Buffalo Bills coach Joe Brady began filling out his staff by turning to a former colleague in agreeing to hire Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Carmichael has yet to sign his contract. The 54-year-old Carmichael has been a long-time assistant under Sean Payton, including the previous two seasons as the Broncos senior offensive assistant. It was during Payton’s time coaching New Orleans when Carmichael’s tenure overlapped with Brady. The 36-year-old Brady spent the previous two-plus seasons as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator before being promoted to succeed Sean McDermott.

Bills QB Josh Allen says he had surgery for broken bone in right foot

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen said on Thursday that he recently had surgery for a broken bone in his right foot, and expects to be fully healthy for the start of spring practices. Allen said he broke the fifth metatarsal in his foot in getting hurt late in the second quarter of a 23-20 win at Cleveland on Dec. 21. Allen finished the game and the season by playing through the injury. Though walking on crutches and wearing a protective boot on Thursday, Allen said he would have been able to play if Buffalo had a game this week.

Bills promote offensive coordinator Joe Brady to take over as head coach, AP sources say

The Buffalo Bills are promoting offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach, according to two people with knowledge of the decision. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announced Brady’s hiring. One of the people said Brady has agreed to a five-year contract to take over a Josh Allen-led perennial winner that’s accomplished everything short of reaching a Super Bowl. The 36-year-old just completed his fourth season in Buffalo, and his second full season as coordinator. Brady’s promotion brings continuity to Buffalo a little over a week after Sean McDermott was fired following a nine-year tenure.

Philip Rivers has informed the Buffalo Bills he is withdrawing from consideration for the team’s head-coaching job, two people with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private. The Athletic first reported the news. The 44-year-old quarterback, who came out of retirement last month and started three games with the Indianapolis Colts, interviewed with the Bills on Friday. Buffalo’s search process began Wednesday, two days after Sean McDermott was fired following a nine-year tenure. Including Rivers, Buffalo has met with seven candidates.

Buffalo Bills interview Philip Rivers for head coaching job

Philip Rivers has interviewed with the Buffalo Bills for their head coaching job. It’s the latest twist in a busy couple of months for one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. The 44-year-old Rivers has no previous NFL coaching experience, having worked since his initial retirement from the league as a high school coach in his native Alabama. Last month, he ended his five-year retirement and finished the season with the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers was the fourth candidate to interview since the Bills launched their search on Wednesday. Sean McDermott was fired Monday after going 98-50 and reaching the playoffs eight times in nine seasons.

Bills owner feels team hit ‘proverbial wall’ after latest playoff loss

Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula felt his team hit what he called “the proverbial wall” in leading to his decision to abruptly fire coach Sean McDermott this week. Speaking at a season-ending news conference, Pegula said he made up his mind immediately following a 33-30 overtime loss to Denver in a divisional playoff on Saturday. He based his decision in part on seeing how distraught many Bills players, including quarterback Josh Allen, appeared in the locker room in the aftermath of the loss. Pegula spoke Wednesday alongside general manager Brandon Beane, who is tasked with the team’s first coaching search since McDermott took over in 2017.

Bills fire Sean McDermott after 9 seasons of falling short of reaching Super Bowl, AP sources say

The Buffalo Bills have fired Sean McDermott, according to two people with direct knowledge of the decision. The move came two days after the Bills were eliminated in a heart-wrenching 33-30 overtime loss at Denver in the divisional round of the playoffs. McDermott’s tenure ends after nine seasons in which he transformed the franchise into a perennial winner but was knocked for failing to make a Super Bowl appearance. Buffalo became the NFL’s first team to win a playoff round in seven consecutive years but not reach the Super Bowl.

Bills CB Tre’Davious White says he’s found peace and new perspective on life in return to Buffalo

Tre’Davious White arrived in Buffalo in 2017 driven to be the best and began entertaining visions of one day wearing a Hall of Fame gold jacket before two debilitating injuries stopped the cornerback in his tracks. It took time, bouts with depression, and spending a year away from Buffalo for White to find peace and discover what matters most upon rejoining the Bills this season. What he’s learned is no longer being defined by the game. And the 30-year-old believes he’s a better person for having to go through the difficult times. White spoke to The Associated Press as Buffalo prepares to open the playoffs at Jacksonville on Sunday.

After taking the first snap, Josh Allen headed to the sideline and joined the 70,000-plus fans to watch backup Mitch Trubisky throw four touchdown passes as the Buffalo Bills bid a likely farewell to their long-time home with a 35-8 rout of the New York Jets. Gabe Davis caught two touchdown passes and Ty Johnson scored a touchdown rushing and receiving in an outing the playoff-bound Bills rested a majority of their starters. The win coupled with the Los Angeles Chargers’ loss at Denver, led to Buffalo moving up one spot in clinching the No. 6 seed. The Bills will travel to play AFC South champion Jacksonville in the wild-card round next weekend.

McDermott, Bills preparing for playoffs as they host Jets in possible last game at Highmark Stadium

Bills coach Sean McDermott finds his focus being pulled in different directions ahead of Buffalo’s season finale against the New York Jets. He must decide who to play or rest ahead of the playoffs while still giving a proper send-off to Highmark Stadium in what could very well be the last game there. The Bills will move to a new stadium across the street next season. Buffalo can be no higher than the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs, which makes a home playoff game unlikely. Because of the relatively low stakes of Sunday’s game, McDermott will lean toward caution with injured players.

As the Buffalo Bills bid farewell to their long-time home dubbed “The Ralph,” many cherished memories remain of the facility that opened in 1973. Bills vice president of security Chris Clark has had a front-row seat for just about everything that’s taken place at Highmark Stadium. He began his career as an Erie County sheriff directing traffic for Bills games in the 1970s. His time goes beyond the stadium’s construction on a site that was an abandoned farm field and former explosives testing and storage site. The Bills close their season by hosting the New York Jets on Sunday before opening the playoffs on the road. The team is moving to a new $2.1 million stadium set to open across the street next year.

Josh Allen could use a break, and he’s expected to get one in Buffalo’s season finale against Jets

Bills quarterback Josh Allen can use a rest. He’s expected to get one Sunday in what’s essentially a meaningless regular-season finale against the Jets. Aside from taking the opening snap to extend his streak of consecutive regular-season starts to 122, the longest active run among NFL quarterbacks, Allen is expected to watch the game from the sideline. The time off would provide Allen’s sore right foot time to heal before Buffalo opens the playoffs on the road in the wild-card round in two weeks. He also could use a mental break during a season in which he’s been relied upon to carry the offensive load too often.

Josh Allen has 3 TDs passing, 3 rushing to outduel Baker Mayfield as Bills beat Buccaneers 44-32

Josh Allen has become the first NFL player to have two games with three touchdowns passing and three rushing. He did it Sunday to lead the Buffalo Bills to a 44-32 win over Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Allen’s last TD was a rugged 9-yard run with 2:35 left that put the game away. The Bills benched struggling receiver Keon Coleman in a bid to spark their passing game, and each of Allen’s three touchdown passes went for 25 yards or more. He finished 19 of 30 for 317 yards, and the Bills overcame his two first-half interceptions. The game featured nine lead changes.

Bills receiver Keon Coleman is in the doghouse again, with the second-year player listed as inactive for Buffalo’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s the second time coach Sean McDermott has sent a message to Coleman this season. He was benched for the first series in a 23-20 loss to New England in Week 5 after being late for a meeting. The Bills did not provide a reason for the decision, though Coleman’s latest benching coincides with the Bills attempting to spark an inconsistent passing game. Just when it appeared fashionable in some NFL circles to begin writing off Josh Allen and the Bills as mere pretenders, Buffalo went ahead and flipped the script. The Bills reached the midpoint of their season at 6-2 with what stands as a signature 28-21 victory over nemesis Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Impressive as Sunday’s outcome was, more encouraging was how the offense and defense played complementary parts in finishing off the Chiefs. The Bills finally are showing signs of building an identity. There remain challenges ahead, with games against Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and a rematch against New England still looming.
