Norman Powell scores 36 points to lead Heat past Pistons 118-112

Norman Powell scored 36 points and Bam Abdebayo added 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Miami Heat extended their winning streak to four games with a 118-112 win over the Detroit Pistons. Cade Cunningham had 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for Detroit and Marcus Sasser scored 18. Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 19 points for the Heat and Andrew Wiggins added 17. Detroit trailed by 22 in the second half and was still down 114-103 with two minutes left, but scored six straight points to make it a five-point game.

Preston Stone throws 3 TDs, Northwestern has 4 takeaways in 34-7 victory over Central Michigan

Preston Stone threw three touchdown passes and Northwestern turned four turnovers into touchdowns and beat Central Michigan 34-7 in the GameAbove Sports Bowl at Ford Field on Friday. The Wildcats (7-6) extended their bowl game winning streak to six. They haven’t lost in the postseason since a 45-6 loss to Pittsburgh in the 2015 Outback Bowl. Central Michigan (7-6) is 0-3 against the Big Ten in bowl games, with all three losses coming at Ford Field. The Chippewas lost 51-48 to Purdue in the 2007 Motor City Bowl and 21-14 to Minnesota in the 2015 Quick Lane Bowl.

Christmas bowl games often turn into scoring bonanzas, where the first team to 40 points is the winner. The GameAbove Sports Bowl might be an exception to that rule — 20 points could be more than enough. Friday’s game in Detroit pits Northwestern and Central Michigan, two schools that combine strong defenses with low-scoring offenses. The Wildcats are 34th in the country defensively, allowing 20.9 points per game, but 103rd on offense at 22.5. The Chippewas rank 50th on defense at 22.7 points per game and 93rd offensively at 23.8.

Cunningham stars late as the Pistons hang on to beat the Hawks 99-98

Cade Cunningham scored eight of his 18 points in the final 3:21, and the Detroit Pistons rallied to beat the Atlanta Hawks 99-98. Atlanta had a chance to win with 0.1 seconds left, but Jalen Johnson couldn’t convert a tip-in as time expired. Jalen Duren had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who won for the 15th time in 17 games. Caris LeVert added 14 points and made two key defensive plays down the stretch. Johnson had 29 points and 13 rebounds for Atlanta, which had won four of five. Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 26 points and Onyeka Okongwu scored 20.

Jared Goff knows he didn’t have a great game. The Detroit Lions quarterback wasn’t about to let coach Dan Campbell shoulder all the blame for Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. On paper, Goff’s numbers weren’t bad. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover. But he took a season-high five sacks, and the Lions went just 5 of 17 on third down. Detroit’s running game also struggled, leaving Goff in third-and-long situations against the Vikings’ strong pass rush.

Tigers force Game 5 against Mariners in ALDS with 9-3 win

Riley Greene and Javier Báez homered in a four-run sixth inning and the Detroit Tigers kept their season alive with a 9-3 win over the Seattle Mariners in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. The Tigers forced a Game 5 by winning at Comerica Park for the first time in more than a month. They went 0-8 after Tarik Skubal’s 6-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 6, including Seattle’s 8-4 win on Tuesday. The series decider will be on Friday in Seattle, with Skubal facing George Kirby.

Tigers need to find offense before time runs out in the AL Division Series

The Detroit Tigers have less than 24 hours to find an offense that can save their season. Unfortunately for their chances in the American League Division Series, the Tigers have been looking for the last month without any success. Detroit only managed one run on five hits in the first eight innings of their 8-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, leaving them down 2-1 in the series and facing elimination on Wednesday.

Soto ties career high with 6 RBIs, hits grand slam to lead Mets over Tigers 10-8

Juan Soto tied his career high with six RBIs, hitting a grand slam and a tiebreaking, two-run triple to lead the New York Mets over the Detroit Tigers 10-8. Soto’s fourth-inning homer off Charlie Morton put the Mets ahead 6-3. After Detroit tied the score, Soto gave the Mets an 8-6 lead when he tripled off Drew Sommers, who lost in his first big league decision. Soto has 36 homers. He is 11 for 26 with a 1.446 OPS with runners in scoring position since Aug. 1. New York maintained a four-game lead over Cincinnati for the final NL wild card.

Eugenio Suárez says X-rays were negative after he was hit on index finger by pitch against Tigers

Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez hopes he avoided major injury when he was hit in the right index finger by a pitch late in a 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Suárez is a candidate to be traded to a contender. He was hit by a 95.6 mph sinker from Will Vest in the ninth inning Monday night. He immediately doubled over in pain and quickly left the field. Suárez says “the X-rays were negative” and he’s scheduled for more tests on Tuesday. He has 36 homers this season.

Raleigh hits 37th and 38th homers, Mariners end Skubal’s 3-month unbeaten streak with 12-3 romp

Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs to move within one of Barry Bonds’ 2001 record for homers before the All-Star break, and the Seattle Mariners beat Detroit 12-3 on Friday night to end Tarik Skubal’s three-month unbeaten streak. Raleigh — in the lineup as designated hitter — made it 5-3 on a solo shot in the eighth inning, then hit a grand slam in a seven-run ninth. Skubal (10-3) was 10-0 with a 1.62 ERA in 16 starts since losing 3-2 to the Mariners in Seattle on April 2. He allowed four runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, striking out five. Luis Castillo (6-5) got the win, giving up three runs in five innings.

Mariners’ Cal Raleigh breaks AL record with 38 homers before the All-Star break

Cal Raleigh hit his 37th and 38th home runs in Seattle’s 12-3 victory over Detroit on Friday night to move within one of Barry Bonds’ 2001 major league record for homers before the All-Star break. Raleigh hit a solo homer off former teammate Tyler Holton in the eighth to tie the American League record of 37 set by Reggie Jackson in 1969 and matched by Chris Davis in 2013. Raleigh hit a grand slam off Brant Hurter in the ninth. Seattle has two games left in Detroit before the break.

Junior Caminero homers, scores twice to help the Rays end the Tigers’ winning streak

First-time All-Star Junior Caminero homered and scored twice and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Detroit 7-3 on Wednesday to end the major league-leading Tigers’ winning streak at five games. Down 3-2 after five innings, the Rays scored four times in the sixth and Caminero led off the seventh with his 22nd homer — a blast over the Detroit bullpen in left. The Rays broke it open against reliever Chase Lee in the sixth. With two out and a runner on second, Lee replaced Brant Hurter (4-1) and allowed four straight run-scoring hits, including doubles by Ha-Seong Kim and Danny Jansen. Zack Littell (8-7) allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Rays.

Pirates reliever Dennis Santana: Fan ‘crossed a line’ prior to confrontation

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Dennis Santana was involved in an altercation with a fan who ‘crossed the line’ during the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers and at one point was seen leaping and swiping at the person. Santana declined to disclose what the fan said. In videos posted to social media, Santana can be seen pointing out the fan to a police officer before jumping and swinging at the person who is in the front row above the Pittsburgh bullpen at Comerica Park. Santana was escorted away by Pirates bullpen personnel and held back by a teammate.
