DC prepares for Trump’s military parade with 18 miles of fencing and 175 magnetometers

As Washington, D.C., cleans up from the weekend’s culmination of World Pride, the capital city’s focus now shifts straight into a very different mass event — the June 14 military parade to honor the 250th birthday of the army and the 79th birthday of President Donald Trump. Army officials have estimated around 200,000 attendees for the evening military parade. More than 18 miles of security fencing will be erected and 175 magnetometers will be deployed at security checkpoints for the birthday festivities and the nearby parade route.

As World Pride flows straight into the military parade, DC officials say they’re ready for anything

Officials in the nation’s capital generally express full confidence in their ability to handle large, complicated events and huge crowds. That expertise will be put to the test over the next eight days as the District of Columbia hosts massive events on back-to-back weekends. The two wildly divergent events carry the extra possibility of counter-protests or disruption, and that adds a layer of anxiety to the logistical hassles. June 7 and 8 brings the peak of the two-week World Pride celebration with two days of mass gatherings on Pennsylvania Avenue. Then while the cleanup from World Pride is still happening, preparations will immediately begin for the much-hyped June 14 military parade to celebrate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army — and President Donald Trump’s birthday.

The reasons are apparently an extension of equipment issues related to her Thursday night concert in Boston’s Fenway Park, which was also canceled hours before it was set to begin. A Friday night concert at Fenway for country star Jason Aldean was also canceled.

DC mayor seeks business-friendly policies to spark growth amid loss of up to 40,000 federal jobs

With the nation’s capital facing a pair of overlapping budget crises, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has unveiled a budget proposal that bets heavily on business-friendly policies designed to boost investment and move the city away from dependence on a dwindling number of federal jobs. In the short term, Bowser’s team has been scrambling to fill an immediate budget shortfall that was essentially created by the U.S. Congress. In the longer term, her government faces an estimated $1 billion shortfall over the next three years created by President Donald Trump’s ongoing campaign to radically shrink the federal workforce. The city’s Chief Financial Officer has estimated that 40,000 jobs for District of Columbia residents will ultimately be lost.
