Chychrun scores in overtime to lift Capitals past Devils 4-3

Defenseman Jakob Chychrun scored in overtime and Logan Thompson made 35 saves as the Washington Capitals beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 on Saturday night. Chychrun beat Devils netminder Jake Allen with his 15th goal 4:06 into the extra session to lift Washington to only its second win in its last eight games. New Jersey lost its third straight. Aliaksei Protas also scored and added two assists for Washington. Anthony Beauvillier and Alex Ovechkin also scored for the Capitals. Jesper Bratt scored twice for New Jersey. Rangers fail to duplicate road success at MSG, fall to 2-8-1 at home after loss to Lightning

The New York Rangers have an NHL-best 11 road wins, yet their play at home has been a mess by comparison. Coming into Saturday’s game against Tampa following impressive road wins over Carolina and Boston — and a three-game winning streak overall — the Rangers reverted to home form as the surging Lightning beat New York 4-1. The loss dropped New York’s record at Madison Square Garden to 2-8-1. The Rangers have scored just three goals total in those eight regulation defeats.

Islanders’ Matthew Schaefer becomes youngest NHL defenseman with multigoal game

Matthew Schaefer has added another milestone to his fast start with the New York Islanders. Schaefer had two goals in a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Schaefer, who turned 18 on Sept. 5, became the youngest defenseman in NHL history with a multigoal game, moving in front of Hall of Famer Bobby Orr. Schaefer, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NHL draft, has five goals and five assists in his first 12 games with New York.

Schaefer stars as the Islanders score 2 late goals to edge Blue Jackets 3-2

Rookie Matthew Schaefer and Simon Holmstrom scored 29 seconds apart late in the third period, helping the New York Islanders rally for a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. David Rittich made 20 saves in New York’s second straight win. Miles Wood and defenseman Denton Mateychuk scored for Columbus, which beat St. Louis 3-2 on Saturday for its fourth consecutive win. Elvis Merzlikins made 36 saves. Schaefer tied it at 2 with his second goal of the game with 1:07 to go. Holmstrom tapped a loose puck past Merzlikins with 38 seconds left for his fourth of the season.

Lindgren makes 35 saves as Capitals edge Rangers 1-0

Anthony Beauvillier scored in the second period, Charlie Lindgren stopped 35 shots, and the Washington Capitals beat the New York Rangers 1-0. Beauvillier’s tip-in of a shot by Alex Ovechkin with 6:13 left in the middle period beat Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick and held up as the Capitals won for the second time in two nights. Washington defeated the Islanders 4-2 on Saturday at UBS Arena. It was the 10th career shutout for Lindgren, making his first start this season.  The 39-year-old Quick also was making his season debut after Igor Shesterkin won two of the Rangers first three games. He made 20 saves.
