RAPID CITY, S.D. – A 16-year-old boy is dead and a 17-year-old is facing a charge of first degree manslaughter after a shooting Friday night in Rapid City.
Police say the shooting happened inside a vehicle near Deadwood Avenue and Omaha Street with a firearm stolen during a vehicle burglary in October.
Police say Isaiah Taha, 17 of Rapid City, was in the backseat and was handling the gun when it went off hitting Kade Potter, 16 of Box Elder, who was sitting in the front-seat.
The driver rushed Potter to the hospital where he died the following day.
Taha was arrested for first-degree manslaughter, obstruction, minor in possession of a pistol, receiving stolen property, and underage consumption and possession of alcohol.
Kade Potter’s family released a statement to KOTA late Monday night,
“Kade was the amazing young man that was tragically taken from this world in Friday night’s shooting. The Family would like to share some photos of him so that he is remembered as a person and not a victim. Kade is a loving son, brother and friend. He energized any room graced by his presence and made friends with any person blessed enough to have had a conversation with him. He is loved so deeply by his family and friends. Please talk to your kids about gun safety. If you have a gun, make sure it is locked up. Although that is important it is not enough to keep your kids safe. Have a conversation with your kid(s) about what to do and how to excuse themselves from any situation they are in where a gun is present.”
To donate to the family, there is a GoFundMe account at “Remembering Kade Potter: Funeral Fund.”
