Sturgis holds round three of budget hearings

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council held its final round of budget hearings Monday night ahead of a first reading scheduled for December 2nd.

Some of the bigger budgets were up for discussion, including police, dispatch, fire and Ambulance.

According to handouts given to council members, the 2025 preliminary budget for police is $2.3 million dollars. That is down from the $2.4 million budgeted for 2024. That number for 2025 does include rally expenses.

Dispatch shows a 2025 budget of $175,000, also down from 2024’s $182,352.

For the fire department, the 2025 estimated budget is $170,000, down from 2024’s $194,284.

And the ambulance budget for 2025 is $1,783,081. That is down from the 2024 budget of $1,895,955. The city lists just over $33,700 in reserves in the ambulance fund.

Another large budget item is mayor and council, which is up over last year. That’s despite budgetary cuts for 2025, including mayor and council giving and removal of the professional services budget.

Total budget for mayor and council for 2025 is $1,036,864.

Other budget categories discussed Monday night were animal shelter, finance, Downtown Sturgis Foundation, Sturgis Economic Development Corporation and Sturgis Chamber of Commerce.
