Rapid City man arrested for exploitation of minors

PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. – After a six month-long investigation, Reed Thompson of Rapid City, S.D., is in custody facing numerous charges of taking advantage of high-risk girls. The 55-year-old is in the Pennington County Jail.
The investigation began earlier in 2024 after his actions were first reported to law enforcement. Details of the incidents are being purposefully withheld out of respect for the child victims.
On August 28, 2024, local law enforcement executed a search warrant at Thompson’s residence on Chief Drive in Rapid City. A number of items were collected from his residence.
Thompson was placed under arrest for one count of Second Degree Rape, one count of Third Degree Rape, one Count of Fourth Degree Rape, Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Solicitation of a Minor and drug related charges.

The PCSO investigation into Thompson’s actions has been conducted with the assistance of the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and Homeland Security Investigations.
This case has been handed over to the Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office.
