SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The 2024 SDHSAA state volleyball tournaments wrapped up its action on Saturday with the championship and placement matches.
Harrisburg three-peated in Class AA, Dell Rapids won their first championship in Class A, and Chester went back-to-back in Class B.
Class AA
7th/8th | No. 7 Brandon Valley defeated No. 8 Aberdeen Central 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13)
Jayaunna Stroh led the Lnyx with 19 kills, while Riya Sheley recorded 30 assists as well. Mya VanWestern had 30 digs on the defensive side for Brandon Valley too. Lauryn Burckhard was the top kill leader for Aberdeen Central with 14. Her teammate Alivia Miller notched 33 assists and Taylin Kleffman had 24 digs defensively.
5th/6th | No. 6 Sioux Falls Roosevelt defeated No. 5 Watertown 3-2 (25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13)
The Rough Riders were led by Kaylee Evenson, who tallied up 29 kills on offense. Kate Wiebesiek notched 45 assists, and Izzy Brinkman dug out 26 balls on defense for Roosevelt as well. Watertown’s leading attacker was Emery Thury, who recorded 25 kills. Other top performances for the Arrows were Grace Corey with 45 assists, and Natalie Pearson with 25 digs.
3rd/4th | No. 4 O’Gorman defeated No. 2 Sioux Falls Jefferson 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-11)
Keira Hermanson and Ruthie Robinson both recorded 15 kills to lead the Knights. Kyra Hermanson had 52 of the teams 56 assists as well. Tya Mauney led O’Gorman in digs with 20. For Jefferson, Isabel Simmons led the team with 15 kills. Olivia Wachal notched 21 assists, and Averi Schmitt led the Cavaliers with 12 digs.
Championship | No. 1 Harrisburg defeated No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington 3-1 (25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 25-13)
Harrisburg’s top offensive performer in kills was Gabi Zachariasen with 28 in the match. Josalyn Samuels also had 51 of the teams 53 assists. Defensively, it was Maggie Meister who contributed with 21 digs. On the Sioux Falls Washington end, Kaelyn Snoozy racked up 19 kills, and Emily Akkerman totaled 33 assists. Taryn Kirsch had 18 digs as well for the Warriors.
Class A
7th/8th | No. 5 Mt. Vernon/Plankinton defeated No. 6 Winner 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21)
Reagan Rus led the Titans with 18 kills in the match. Her teammate Alyssa Johnson recorded 32 assists, and Alexis Hauge led the team defensively with 25 digs in the box score. For Winner, Keelie Kuil led the team in kills with eleven. Gracie Root contributed with 27 assists. Root also led the Warriors with 20 digs.
5th/6th | No. 1 Miller defeated No. 7 Sioux Valley 3-0 (25-16, 33-31, 25-12)
Miller’s Paige Werdel recorded 13 kills in the match, while Olivia Resel notched 37 assists. On defense for the Rustlers, Jolie Palmer had 20 digs. Kaedyn Sapp and Adison Renkly tied for kills on the Sioux Valley side with eight each. Sunny Hesby was the assist leader for the Cossacks with 12, and Sapp also led the team in digs with 23.
3rd/4th | No. 8 Sioux Falls Christian defeated No. 2 Hamlin 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-21)
Brietta Tims and Camdyn Mulder combined for 21 kills on offense for Sioux Falls Christian, while Addisen Barber contributed with 35 assists. The top defensive performer for Sioux Falls Christian was Chloe Bosma with 23 digs. Addison Neuendorf had 12 kills for Hamlin. Issie Steffensen led the team in assists with 22, while Addie Steffensen led the team in digs with 12.
Championship | No. 3 Dell Rapids defeated No. 4 Dakota Valley 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 25-11)
Madelynn Henry had 24 kills for Dell Rapids in the championship match. Sophi Randall led the team in assists and Alaina Wolff was the top defender in the digs category with 19. For Dakota Valley, Claire Munch slammed down 24 kills, while her sister Madelyn Munch tallied up 34 assists. Coryn Kimbell led the Panthers in digs with 15.
Class B
7th/8th | No. 6 Gayville-Volin defeated No. 4 Kadoka Area 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16)
The Raiders were led offensively by Maia Achen, who had 18 kills in the match. Britton Scheetz had 37 assists Taylor Hoxeng recorded 35 digs as well for Gayville-Volin. Bella Williams was the top attacker for Kadoka Area as she tallied 18 kills. Kassidee Williams, Bella’s sister, had 36 assists. The top player for the Kougars defensively was Madisyn Nemecek, who had 20 digs.
5th/6th | No. 7 Colman-Egan defeated No. 8 Castlewood 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 19-17)
Brynlee Landis was atop the attack box score for Colman-Egan with 21 kills. Finley Luze and Kaylee Voelker combined for 55 assists, and Presley Luze recorded 26 digs as well for the Hawks. For Castlewood, Emerson Carter led the offense with 18 kills. Cassidy Kirwan attributed 17 assists, and Nora Solberg contributed with 24 digs on defense.
3rd/4th | No. 5 Burke defeated No. 3 Hitchcock-Tulare 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-16)
Emmie Hausmann had the most kills for Burke in the match with 13. Ava Sargent recorded 16 assists and Kailee Frank had 18 digs for the Cougars. On the Hitchcock-Tulare end, Katelyn Schroeder tallied 18 kills, while Lila Jo Johnson notched 22 assists, and Cambree Hoekman recorded 17 digs.
Championship | No. 1 Chester defeated No. 2 Warner 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 15-10)
Chester’s Jacy Wolf led her team with 20 kills, while teammate Lily Van Hal accumulated 19 as well. Van Hal and Wolf also led the team in assists with 25 each. Van Hal was also the digs leader for the Flyers with 25. For Warner, Kyleigh Schopp racked up 11 kills while teammate MaKenna Leidholt had ten. Libby Scepaniak led the Monarchs in assists with 15. Jordyn Jensen was the top digs leader for Warner with 27.
