STURGIS, S.D. – After being tabled several times over the past few months, the Sturgis Council last night voted on a request brought forward by San Monahan, requesting his annual royalty payment be directed to the Sturgis Community Center.
The community center has been discussing a climbing wall and Monahan had wanted his $3,500 royalty payment to go towards that.
Council members have been worried about setting a precedent, and after much discussion, decided to split Monahan’s royalty payment 50-50 between Sturgis Rally Charities and the Sturgis Rally Endowment Fund.
The thought is that Monahan could ask Rally Charities for a donation to the climbing wall.
Sturgis Interim Mayor Kevin Forrester says he had a discussion with San Monahan earlier about that plan.
The royalty payment is for use of the Monahan Family trademarks on rally merchandise.
The council’s vote for the 50-50 split was 4-1 with Jesse Blakeman voting no.
The council last night also heard from Zach Wisely with Brosz Engineering, who presented the latest bridge inspection report.
He says none of the bridges or culverts within city limits are in bad shape.
The report included one bridge on the Whitewood Service Road, three bridges that cross Bear Butte Creek and two box culverts that are part of the Deadwood Channel.
