Hurley goes out a winner in what could be his final home game at Arizona State

Arizona State scratched and clawed its was to a 70-60 win over No. 14 Kansas in what may be coach Bobby Hurley’s final home game. Arizona State jumped out to a 20-point lead, let the Jayhawks back in it and made all the key plays down the stretch to close out its home schedule with a win. Hurley’s contract was not renewed beyond this season, so the Sun Devils will likely need a miracle run through the Big 12 tournament for the coach to keep his job. Hurley led Arizona State to three NCAA Tournaments, including two straight, but didn’t win consistently enough. He at least went out with a bang, if this was the end.

The Iran war has upended flights across the Middle East. Here’s what travelers should know

The U.S. and Israel’s joint war in Iran has already upended travel across the Middle East, stranding tens of thousands of people. And the future is anything but certain. Experts stress that flights scheduled in the coming days and weeks could continue to see disruptions, causing ripple effects globally. Many carriers have been forced to either cancel flights or shift to longer routes. That’s straining operating costs and ticket prices, both of which could become more expensive if airlines have to pay more for fuel the longer the war drags on. Experts recommend postponing unnecessary travel if possible, checking refund or insurance policies and, most importantly, monitoring safety advisories.

Congress taking first votes on Iran war as debate rages about US goals

The U.S. Senate is headed towards a vote on President Donald Trump’s decision to embark on a war against Iran. It’s an extraordinary test in Congress for a conflict that has rapidly spread across the Middle East with no clear U.S. exit strategy. The legislation is known as a war powers resolution. It gives lawmakers an opportunity to demand congressional approval before any further attacks are carried out. The votes marked a weighty moment for lawmakers. Their decisions on the five-day-old war — which Trump entered without congressional approval — could determine the fates of U.S. military members, countless other lives and the future of the region.

US maternal deaths fell in 2024 and may have dropped again last year, government data shows

A new CDC analysis shows U.S. maternal deaths keep edging down. On Wednesday, the CDC reported 649 mothers died in 2024 during pregnancy or soon after birth. That is down from 669 in 2023. One researcher says provisional 2025 data also looks promising. He cautions the count can change as records get added or removed. The CDC counts deaths through 42 days after birth. Bleeding, clots, and infections are leading causes. The 2024 rate sits near 18 per 100,000 births. But there are disparities: Black women die at over triple the rate of white or Hispanic women.

Lock step no more: Iran war shows cracks in Trump’s conservative media support

Some of the sharpest criticism that President Donald Trump has faced in the early days of the Iran war has come from once-loyal media figures more accustomed to singing his praises. The conservative media infrastructure has grown so influential and valuable to the president when everything runs smoothly that it’s noticeable when there is discontent. Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly and Matt Walsh are among the notable figures to express some dismay, much of it centered around the influence of Israel. Walsh has also said the messaging around the war was muddled. Trump says that he knows MAGA best, and these objections do not reflect the views of his supporters.

Hurley is the final year of his contract and the administration hasn’t given any indications it will be extended amid a fourth mediocre season in the past five years. The Sun Devils (16-14, 7-10 Big 12) did all they could to send their coach off with a win in a physical, emotional game that included the ejection of Kansas coach Bill Self and one of his assistants. US soldiers were killed in Iranian drone strike on operations center at Kuwait civilian port

An operations center targeted by an Iranian drone strike that killed six American soldiers was located in a civilian port in Kuwait, more than 10 miles away from the main Army base. That’s according to satellite images and a U.S. official. The husband of one of the slain soldiers told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the hub was a shipping container-style building and had no defenses. A satellite image taken Monday and reviewed by the AP shows the main building in the complex destroyed, with a trail of black smoke rising from it. It’s located in Port Shuaiba, a working seaport south of Kuwait City. The U.S. official confirmed the image depicted the location of Sunday’s attack.

A property tax revolt spreads across states, but election-year cuts hit opposition

States across the country are pushing to cut property taxes as homeowners complain about rising bills. But some plans are running into political opposition driven by concerns about funding cuts to governments and schools. Experts compare the moment to past tax revolts like California’s Proposition 13. On Tuesday, Georgia lawmakers rejected a constitutional amendment after most Democrats opposed it. In Florida, the state House backs a plan to phase out some property taxes, but state Senate leaders say they’d prefer more modest cuts. Like Georgia, other states are exploring shifting from property taxes to sales taxes. But experts say that it can hit low-income residents harder and leave some governments short on revenue.

Trump says ‘someone from within’ Iranian regime might be best choice to lead once war ends

President Donald Trump says “someone from within” the Iranian regime might be the best choice to take power once the U.S.-Israel military campaign is completed. The president had only four days ago emphatically called on Iranians to “take over your government” once the U.S.-Israel bombardment ends. But on Tuesday, he appeared to drift further away from the idea that the war will lead to an end of the theocratic rule that has been in place since the country’s 1979 Islamic revolution. Trump has been working to counter critics, and on Tuesday pushed back against suggestions that Israel drove the U.S. into war.

Trump threatens to cut off trade with Spain after it disallowed US use of joint bases in Iran war

President Donald Trump is threatening to cut off trade with Spain. Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said “we don’t want anything to do with Spain.” The U.S. president’s comments came a day after Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said his country would not allow the U.S. to use the bases in southern Spain in any strikes not covered by the United Nations’ charter. It is unclear how Trump would cut off trade with Spain, given that Spain is under the umbrella of the European Union. The EU negotiates trade deals for all 27 member countries.

The sold-out concert Thursday night at New York’s Beacon Theatre also marks the event’s 10th year and the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary. They say federal cuts to food programs have raised the stakes. Producer Greg Williamson says artists seem more eager to step in. The concert has raised $65 million over a decade. Leaders say this year’s show and livestream could become their biggest fundraiser yet, as the charity expands in Brooklyn.

Cadillac brings a new American team to the Formula 1 grid as the season opens in Australia. The team makes its racing debut this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. The project started with Michael Andretti’s bid, but it now belongs to TWG Motorsports and General Motors. The group kept building the car and engine even after F1 first said no. Cadillac signed Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas to lead the effort. The team leases Ferrari engines until its General Motors engines are ready. Many expect early struggles, but Cadillac says it has come to win.

It’s election season again. This is why and how AP calls races across the country

The Associated Press has compiled votes and declared winners in elections across the nation for nearly 180 years. The U.S. doesn’t have a nationwide body that collects and releases election results. Elections are administered locally, by thousands of offices, following standards set by the states. In many cases, the states themselves don’t even offer up-to-date tracking of election results. The AP fills this gap by compiling vote results and declaring winners in elections — providing critical information in the period between Election Day and the official certification of results, which typically takes weeks.

Patrick O’Connell to bare his ‘demons’ in a memoir on building The Inn at Little Washington

Chef Patrick O’Connell has written a memoir about turning an old garage into The Inn at Little Washington, a world-famous restaurant. He says he waited to tell some stories until many people in them had died. O’Connell opened the restaurant in 1978. The title is a reference to streets where the restaurant and hotel is located in Washington, Virginia. O’Connell’s honors include a James Beard lifetime award and a National Humanities Medal, for celebrating regional flavors and local farmers.

Target reported another quarter of lower sales and profits as the discounter struggles to regain its footing in an environment where it has faced still-high inflation and shopper boycotts. The company earned $2.30 per share, or $1.05 billion, for the three-month period ended Jan. 31. That compares with $2.41 per share, or $1.10 billion, or during the year-ago period. Kevin Durant says a wide-open NBA playoff race is fun. It’s hard to argue with that

Kevin Durant says the NBA’s new salary “aprons” help create real parity, and this season’s title race feels wide open. Durant says fans and teams enjoy not knowing who stands out. He says most teams still tweak lineups and adjust after trades. The West looks especially tight. Houston sits near the top, but a short skid can drop a team fast. On Monday, Rockets coach Ime Udoka said nobody can afford off nights. Betting markets still favor Oklahoma City. Recent history supports chaos. Seven franchises have won the last seven titles.
