Giannis Antetokounmpo returns and says he can’t rush back from injuries at age 31

Giannis Antetokounmpo developed a reputation for making rapid returns from injury during his rise to superstardom, but the Milwaukee Bucks forward acknowledges those days may be drawing to a close. Antetokounmpo had 19 points and 11 rebounds Monday night in Milwaukee’s 108-81 loss to the Boston Celtics, his first action since straining his right calf on Jan. 23. The two-time MVP has missed a career-high 29 games this season, 23 of those with calf injuries. Antetokounmpo says he has to be smart and methodical in his rehab and noted that he’s 31, not 23.

North Carolina primary could mean Roy Cooper vs Michael Whatley in pivotal fall Senate race

North Carolina’s U.S. Senate primary will set up a high-stakes race in the fall that could decide control of the chamber. The main contenders are ex-Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley. They’ll run in their respective party nominee elections Tuesday for the seat currently held by Sen. Thom Tillis. He decided last summer not to run after clashes with President Donald Trump. Experts say outside money could make this Senate race one of the most expensive ever. Other statewide and House primary elections also fill the ballot.

A mess in Texas? What to watch in Tuesday’s primaries

The 2026 midterm season begins in earnest on Tuesday with two of the nation’s most consequential Senate primaries playing out in Texas. Republican leaders in Washington openly fret that a victory by conservative firebrand Ken Paxton over four-term incumbent Sen. John Cornyn would give Democrats a good chance of winning the seat come November. The contest has already cost Republicans tens of millions of dollars, and there will be much more spent ahead of a May 26 runoff if no one gets 50% in the three-way primary. Democrats, meanwhile, are picking between two rising stars with conflicting styles, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico.

Man convicted of 1991 fatal shooting of police officer is set to be executed in Florida

A man convicted of fatally shooting a police officer with his own service weapon during a traffic stop is set to be executed in Florida. Billy Leon Kearse is scheduled to receive a three-drug injection starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Florida State Prison near Starke. Kearse was initially sentenced to death in 1991 after being convicted of first-degree murder and robbery with a firearm. The Florida Supreme Court ordered a new sentencing, and he was resentenced in 1997. This is Florida’s third execution scheduled for 2026, following a record 19 executions last year. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis oversaw more executions in a single year in 2025 than any other Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The previous record was set in 2014 with eight executions.

Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn is trying to hold on for a fifth term in Texas’ GOP primary. Democrats will choose whether to send Rep. Jasmine Crockett or state Rep. James Talarico to a November general election where the party once again hopes it has a chance. Tuesday’s primaries in Texas are among the first of the 2026 midterms. Cornyn faces a challenge from MAGA favorite and state Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt. The contest is expected to go to a May runoff. Crockett and Talarico each argue that they are the stronger general election candidate in a state that backed President Donald Trump by 13 points.

The Supreme Court has sided with Republicans in ruling that the boundaries of the only GOP-held congressional district in New York City do not not need to be redrawn for the 2026 elections, despite a court ruling that the district is unfair to Black and Hispanic residents. The justices on Monday halted the state court ruling that had ordered New York’s redistricting commission to redraw the district held by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis that covers Staten Island and a small piece of Brooklyn. The outcome is a victory for Republicans in a national tug-of-war over redistricting that could determine control of the closely divided House of Representatives.

Moderate Democrats are pushing back on the party’s progressive energy. The Supreme Court seemed likely Monday to loosen a federal law that bars marijuana users from owning guns in a case that crossed typical political lines. A majority of justices appeared to lean toward a narrow ruling in favor of a Texas man who argued he shouldn’t have been charged with a crime because he owned a gun and smoked marijuana a few times a week. The Trump administration asked the high court to revive a criminal case against Ali Danial Hemani under a law that bans all illegal drug users from owning guns. But both liberal and conservative justices seemed skeptical.

Federal court rejects Trump administration attempt to slow tariff refund process

A federal court on Monday rejected the Trump administration’s attempt to slow the process of refunding billions of dollars’ worth of tariffs the Supreme Court struck down as illegal last month. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit started the next phase in the refund process by sending it to a lower court to sort out. In a court filing Friday, Trump’s Justice Department had urged the Federal Circuit to proceed cautiously and hold off for 90 days. But the judges refused.

Going into his fourth season with the White Sox and No. 11 overall, he is more focused on his OPS and power numbers. Benintendi says, “The game kind of changes where the money is, I guess.” The significance of batting average has been in decline for years. Arraez, a three-time batting champion, waited until right before spring training before agreeing to a $12 million, one-year deal with San Francisco.

Stocks slump and oil prices leap as war in the Middle East raises worries about high inflation

Oil prices leaped, and stock markets slumped worldwide following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran. Worries about disruptions to the flow of crude sent oil prices up more than 7% Monday. The S&P 500 fell 0.7% as stocks of airlines and other U.S. businesses stand to see higher fuel bills soon. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 490 points, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.9%. Gold rose as investors looked for something safer to own. Treasury yields often fall when investors are nervous, but they rose instead because of worries that higher oil prices will worsen inflation.

AP Decision Notes: What to expect in the Texas state primaries

Two hotly contested U.S. Senate primaries in Texas will help officially kick off the 2026 midterm election cycle Tuesday. Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn faces a tough challenge from state Attorney General Ken Paxton, U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt and five others in his bid for a fifth term. U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico are the leading candidates for the Democratic nomination. Voters in the Lone Star State will also choose nominees for a full slate of state offices, from governor to state Legislature. Arkansas and North Carolina also hold primaries on Tuesday.

What to know before asking an AI chatbot for health advice

Tech companies are pushing new health chatbots, but experts say you still need to talk to your doctor. OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, and Anthropic has added similar health features for some Claude users. The companies say the bots can review health records and app data to explain medical results and trends. Doctors say they can beat a basic Google search — if users provide more context. But experts warn you should skip AI for emergency symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or severe headaches. Experts also warn about privacy. Anything shared with an AI company isn’t protected by the privacy laws that normally governs sensitive medical information.

North Carolina voters will narrow down the field of candidates Tuesday in a competitive U.S. Senate race that could decide control of the closely divided chamber in November. Also on the ballot are contested primaries for the U.S. House, state Senate and House, and state Court of Appeals. Even before Republican Sen. Thom Tillis announced his retirement last June, the state offered Democrats one of few opportunities to flip a Republican-held seat in an otherwise difficult electoral map. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate, and Democrats need a net pickup of four seats to win back the chamber.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is speaking to widening concerns the U.S.-Israeli strikes in Iran could spiral into a protracted regional conflict by declaring, “This is not Iraq. This is not endless.” Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Air Force Gen. Dan Caine on Monday held the Trump administration’s first news briefing since Saturday’s strikes. Hegseth says the operation has a “clear, devastating, decisive mission” to “destroy the missile threat” from Iran, destroy its navy and “no nukes.” The briefing comes as the conflict has intensified into a wider war in the region. Iran and its allied armed groups have launched missiles at Israel, Arab states and U.S. military targets in the Middle East.

Congress will debate an Iran conflict that is well underway

The U.S. Congress is about to launch a war powers debate over President Donald Trump’s authority to bomb Iran under largely unusual circumstances — the country is, essentially, already at war. The House and the Senate have prepared war powers resolutions for votes this week. Unlike debates over the run-up to the Iraq War in 2003, the joint U.S.-Israel military attack on Iran is well underway. And there’s no foreseeable end in sight. The moment is a defining one for Congress, which alone has the authority under the Constitution to declare war. It will test public support for the Republican president’s overseas military strategy during political and economic unrest at home.
