No, George Washington didn’t have wooden teeth. Yes, he led the Siege of Boston

More than a decade before he became the country’s first president, George Washington was leading a critical campaign in the early days of the American Revolution. The Siege of Boston was his first campaign as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and, in many ways, would set the stage for his later military and political success. Following the Battles of Lexington and Concord, militias had pinned down the British in Boston in April 1775. The Continental Congress, recognizing the need for a more organized military effort, elected Washington to lead the newly formed army.

The trial is being held in Winder, where the shooting happened, with jurors from nearby Hall County.

The event promoting Brown’s performance brand, 741, was held at Oakley founder Jim Jannard’s home. Brown has a sponsorship deal with Oakley.

Indian Health Service to phase out use of dental fillings containing mercury by 2027

The federal agency that provides health care to Native Americans will no longer treat tooth decay with dental fillings containing mercury. The Indian Health Service announced this month it will phase out  the use of such fillings, known as dental amalgams, by 2027. The American Dental Association notes existing evidence does not link mercury exposure via dental fillings to long-term negative health impacts. But advocates say Indian Health Service patients should not receive treatment that is considered antiquated in the private sector. Documents from the Indian Health Service show the percentage of patients receiving mercury fillings has declined from 12% in 2005 to 2% in 2023.

Biodegradable Mardi Gras beads help make Carnival season more sustainable

It is Carnival season in New Orleans. That means gazillions of plastic green, gold and purple beads are being tossed to crowds. But the beaded necklaces are increasingly seen as a problem. Despite efforts to collect them for reuse, many are trashed or left on the ground. A few years ago, the city pulled 46 tons of them from its storm drains. This year, three krewes are throwing biodegradable beads instead. Developed at Louisiana State University, the “PlantMe Beads” are 3D-printed from a starch-based material. The individual beads are hollow spheres containing okra seeds. That is because the necklaces can actually be planted, and the okra attracts bacteria that help them decompose.

Searchers find wreck of luxury steamer lost in Lake Michigan more than 150 years ago

A search team has discovered the wreck of a luxury steamer that sank in a Lake Michigan gale more than 150 years ago. The Lac La Belle left Milwaukee in October 1872. It was headed to Grand Haven, Michigan, when it began taking on water and sank. Eight people died. Shipwreck World, a group that works to discover shipwrecks around the world, announced Friday that a team led by shipwreck hunter Paul Ehorn found the Lac La Belle about 20 miles offshore between Racine and Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2022. Ehorn says the announcement was delayed because poor weather and other commitments kept the team from getting quality photos of the wreck until last summer.

Trump’s border czar says ‘small’ security force will remain in Minnesota after enforcement drawdown

More than 1,000 immigration agents have left Minnesota’s Twin Cities area and hundreds more will depart in the days ahead as part of the Trump administration’s drawdown of its immigration enforcement surge. That word comes from White House border czar Tom Homan. He tells CBS’ “Face the Nation” that a “small” security force will stay for a short period to protect remaining immigration agents and will respond “when our agents are out and they get surrounded by agitators and things got out of control.” He didn’t define “small.” The Trump administration announced last week it was drawing down its immigration enforcement surge in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

US military boards another oil tanker in Indian Ocean after tracking it from the Caribbean

The U.S. military says it’s boarded another sanctioned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean. The Pentagon said in a statement Sunday that U.S. forces boarded the Veronica III after tracking it from the Caribbean Sea. Venezuela had faced U.S. sanctions on its oil for several years and relied on a shadow fleet of tankers. President Donald Trump ordered a quarantine of sanctioned tankers in December to pressure then-President Nicolás Maduro before Maduro was captured in a U.S. military operation. The Defense Department says U.S. forces boarded the Veronica III overnight. The Pentagon’s social media post doesn’t say whether the ship was formally seized.

Derek Dooley didn’t vote for years. Now he wants Georgia voters to send him to Washington

Former football coach Derek Dooley says Georgia voters should send him to the Senate because he’s a political outsider. It’s unclear whether the strategy will work in an era where President Donald Trump’s antiestablishment movement dominates Washington. Dooley believes his work on the sidelines will help him connect with voters from all backgrounds and represent them better than the two congressmen he’s running against in the May primary. But critics note that Dooley went 20 years without voting until the 2024 presidential election. He’s backed by Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp. Republicans are trying to oust Democrat Jon Ossoff.

As some people push to make profound autism its own diagnosis, this family is raising twins with it

As the definition of autism has widened, there’s a growing push to separate profound autism into its own diagnosis. People with this condition, such as 9-year-old twins from Massachusetts, need lifelong care. Proponents of separating out this condition seek to ensure that people like them get the support and services they need. But some in the autism community worry this would reduce attention on the broader spectrum and the individual needs of everyone on it. The debate is gaining prominence as the Trump administration focuses on autism, awarding money for research projects while promoting unproven and debunked claims about what causes it.
