Speaker Johnson faces tough choices as partial government shutdown drags and debate over ICE deepens

House Speaker Mike Johnson faces tough days ahead trying to pass a federal funding package and prevent a prolonged partial government shutdown. Democrats are demanding changes to rein in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations after the deaths in Minneapolis. But Republicans are making their own demands in support of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. A partial shutdown started over the weekend when funding lapsed for several agencies. Trump struck a deal with senators, who approved new funding, but only temporarily for Homeland Security until Feb. 13. That would give Congress time to consider new restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Johnson now needs Trump to help push that deal through the House.

The Republican National Committee vastly outpaced Democrats in 2025, according to year-end filings to the Federal Election Commission. President Donald Trump’s party holds a nearly $100 million advantage ahead of midterm elections. As Democrats have struggled, the RNC tallied $172 million in 2025, with $95 million cash on hand at year’s end. In contrast, the Democratic National Committee posted $145 million for the year, with $14 million on hand, but $17 million in debt, to start the new year underwater. It all points to competitive campaigns ahead. Trump and his Republican Party are fighting political headwinds that tend to brush back the party in power during midterm elections that determine control of Congress.

A person familiar with the decision said Sunday that Morris will join the Niners to replace Robert Saleh, who left San Francisco to take over as head coach for the Tennessee Titans. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t announced the hiring. ESPN first reported the decision.

No. 1 UConn hands Tennessee worst loss in storied rivalry, routing Lady Vols 96-66

Azzi Fudd and UConn got a measure of revenge for the team’s most recent loss, handing Tennessee the largest defeat in the history of the storied rivalry between the teams. The No. 1 Huskies were up by four midway through the third quarter before using a 14-0 run to close the period and put the game away in the 96-66 victory Sunday. The 30-point margin topped the Huskies’ 79-56 victory in 2002 that was the previous worst loss in the series for Tennessee. Johnson says no quick House vote to end partial shutdown and blames Democrats for their ICE demands

House Speaker Mike Johnson says it’ll be a few days before a government funding package comes up for a vote in the House. That all but ensures the partial federal shutdown will drag into the week. Democrats are demanding changes to rein in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations. Johnson tells “Fox News Sunday” that he’s relying on help from President Donald Trump to ensure passage, possibly Tuesday. Trump struck a deal with senators to separate the homeland security funding from a broader package. That gives two weeks for Congress to debate and vote on new restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

Top Justice Department official plays down chance for charges arising from Epstein files revelations

A top Justice Department official is playing down the possibility of additional criminal charges arising from the Jeffrey Epstein files. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said on CNN on Sunday that the existence of “horrible photographs” and troubling email correspondence does not “allow us necessarily to prosecute somebody.” Department officials said over the summer that a review of records from Epstein investigations did not establish a basis for new criminal investigations, a position that Blanche said remains unchanged even as a massive document dump since Friday has focused fresh attention on his links to powerful individuals around the world and revived questions about what, if any, knowledge the wealthy financier’s contacts had about his crimes.

The release of “Melania” was unlike any seen before. Amazon MGM Studios paid $40 million for the rights, plus some $35 million to market it, making it the most expensive documentary ever. While the result would be a flop for most films with such high costs, “Melania” was a success by documentary standards. It’s the best opening weekend for a documentary, outside of concert films, in 14 years. The Sam Raimi-directed survival thriller “Send Help” was No. 1 with $20 million.

Paul George’s drug suspension latest fiasco for 76ers franchise flailing since run to 2001 Finals

Joel Embiid had missed another game because of injury during a challenging season with the Sixers. Paul George, who has faced his own struggles, offered advice to Embiid on handling injuries. George admitted in February 2025 that he relied on painkillers to play through injuries. His first year in Philadelphia was tough, marred by injuries and personal stress from wildfires near his Los Angeles home. On Saturday, the NBA suspended George for 25 games for violating the anti-drug program. Despite these setbacks, the Sixers remain hopeful for a successful season if they can stay healthy and maintain momentum.

Collar cams offer a bear’s eye view into the lives of grizzlies on Alaska’s desolate North Slope

Researchers at Washington State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are using collar cams to study a remote population of grizzly bears on Alaska’s North Slope. Twelve bears have been equipped with cameras, capturing their daily activities like playing, hunting and foraging. The footage shows bears eating caribou carcasses, hunting calves, and later shifting to berries and vegetation. These Arctic grizzlies are smaller than their salmon-fed counterparts, weighing up to 350 pounds. The study aims to understand their diet and survival strategies, with plans to expand the research to 36 bears over the next two years.

Trump’s failed bid to elevate an Arab American ally shows cracks in his political coalition

Donald Trump credits the mayor of a small Detroit suburb with helping him win over Michigan’s Arab American community during the 2024 presidential campaign. And once in office, Trump nominated Amer Ghalib to be his ambassador to Kuwait. But that nomination has stalled due to Republican opposition. Ghalib says he’s no longer interested in the diplomatic post and is frustrated by the experience. The situation has strained relations between Republicans and Arab Americans, who backed Trump and were unhappy with Democrat Joe Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza. Critics accuse the Trump administration of sidelining Arab American voices and there’s widespread disappointment in that community.

Shakur Stevenson dominates Teofimo Lopez to become a 4-division champion

Shakur Stevenson dominated Teofimo Lopez to win a title in a fourth weight class, taking a unanimous decision to capture the WBO junior welterweight belt. The unbeaten Stevenson was in control the whole way Saturday night, hardly getting hit in the early rounds and opening a cut over Lopez’s left eye later in the bout. All three judges scored the fight 119-109, giving just one round to Lopez. Lopez tried to press the action, but too often all that accomplished was leaving himself open to Stevenson’s counter punches. The current WBC lightweight champion added the 140-pound belt that Lopez held.
