Boxer Jarrell Miller has his hairpiece knocked upward by a punch, then throws it into the crowd

Boxer Jarrell Miller was hit with such a good punch it knocked his hair off. The heavyweight was facing Kingsley Ibeh on Saturday night when Ibeh landed a punch in the second round that caused a roar from the crowd, despite it not looking particularly hard. But the punch knocked Miller’s head backward, and his hairpiece popped upward from the front, revealing a large bald spot that covered most of his head. Miller finished the round with the hairpiece, then ripped it off in his corner between rounds and tossed it into the crowd at Madison Square Garden. Miller won by split decision, then rubbed the top of his head while doing a celebratory dance.

NASA begins a practice countdown for its first moonshot with astronauts in more than 50 years

NASA has begun a two-day practice countdown for its first moonshot with astronauts in 53 years. The dress rehearsal that started Saturday night will culminate with the fueling of the space agency’s new moon rocket. It is a crucial test that will determine when four astronauts blast off on their lunar flyby. If everything goes well with Monday’s fueling test, NASA could launch within a week. Teams will fill the rocket with more than 700,000 gallons of super-cold fuel, stopping half a minute short of when the engines would light. The countdown was delayed two days by a bitter cold spell. Feb. 8 is now the earliest the rocket could launch.

Justin Rose delivers a Tiger-like performance at Torrey Pines. He leads by 5 shots

Justin Rose delivered a performance Saturday at Torrey Pines that Tiger Woods could appreciate, stretching his lead to as many as eight shots until a few late mistakes led to a 4-under 68 for a five-stroke lead in the Farmers Insurance Open. Rose, who won at Torrey in 2019, started the third round with a four-shot lead and quickly pulled away with a brilliant stretch of three holes on the front nine of the South course. Rose was at 21-under 195. It was the second-largest 54-hole lead at the tournament behind the eight-shot lead Woods had in 2008. Woods practically owned the public course along the Pacific Bluff with eight professional wins, including the U.S. Open. Dahmen finished strong for a 68 and was second.

Judge says she won’t halt the immigration enforcement surge as a lawsuit proceeds

A federal judge says she won’t halt the immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota and the Twin Cities as a lawsuit over it proceeds. Judge Katherine M. Menendez on Saturday denied a preliminary injunction sought in a lawsuit filed this month by state Attorney General Keith Ellison and the mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul. It argued that the Department of Homeland Security is violating constitutional protections. The lawsuit sought a quick order to halt the enforcement action or limit its scope. Lawyers with the U.S. Department of Justice have called the lawsuit “legally frivolous.” Federal officers have fatally shot two people on the streets of Minneapolis: Renee Good on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti on Jan. 24.

NASCAR delays preseason race at Bowman Gray Stadium to Monday

NASCAR has postponed the preseason exhibition race at Bowman Gray Stadium until Monday night because of ice and snow in the Winston-Salem area of North Carolina. The Clash was initially planned as a two-day event starting Saturday, with the main race on Sunday evening. NASCAR already had reduced it to a Sunday-only event, anticipating bad weather. Snow blanketed the Carolinas on Saturday, leading to the decision to move the race to Monday. The roads around Winston-Salem remain uncleared from last weekend’s ice storm. NASCAR said parking lots for fans will open at 9 a.m., with practice and qualifying scheduled for 11 a.m.

A former Sierra Club Foundation director sues over internal racism that he says hinders its mission

A former Sierra Club Foundation employee is suing the nonprofit, alleging that normal workplace interactions got twisted into an unfair harassment complaint to force him out after he called out racial discrimination internally. Pedro da Silva, 29, says he was brought on to lead an ambitious green energy investment program at the foundation, which is the charitable arm for the longstanding nonprofit. But he claims the lack of internal diversity and leaders’ dismissive comments about Black employees ran contrary to the organization’s progressive image. A spokesperson for the Sierra Club Foundation says da Silva’s claims are “completely without merit” and that the decision to fire him was “carefully considered.”

‘We’re gonna beat ’em anyways’ becomes a main storyline for Alabama-Florida hoops matchup

Florida coach Todd Golden insists he wasn’t being disrespectful when he said “we’re gonna beat ’em anyways” while responding to Alabama center Charles Bediako’s return to college basketball. It remains his approach with Bediako and the 23rd-ranked Crimson Tide visiting Gainesville on Sunday. Golden calls it “good for media or for kind of a buildup to the game.” But he doesn’t believe it will be a factor in the outcome. Golden’s quip surely will be as much of a storyline as Bediako’s ongoing court case when No. 19 Florida hosts Alabama inside a sold-out O’Connell Center.

Trump moved fast to cut a funding deal. It’s a striking change from the last shutdown fight

President Donald Trump acted quickly to negotiate with Democratic senators on a deal to avert a government shutdown. It was a big change from his stance during last year’s record-long standoff, when he refused to budge for weeks during a shutdown. Trump’s urgency reflects a changed political landscape and mounting pressure on the Republican administration. Republicans are still dealing with the fallout from two recent fatal shootings by federal agent shootings in Minneapolis and from the 43-day shutdown last year. Some Republicans are frustrated by Trump’s deal with Democrats and are raising the possible of a prolonged shutdown fight when the House returns Monday to vote.

What to know about the partial government shutdown and its impact

The partial government shutdown is a lot different from the record-long shutdown in the fall. That’s mostly because the shutdown that began Saturday may not last long. When the House returns on Monday, lawmakers will try to pass legislation quickly that would end the shutdown. Congress has passed half this year’s funding bills, and that means several important federal agencies and programs continue to operate. Nutrition assistance programs should be unaffected. But funding is lapsing, at least temporarily, for the Pentagon and agencies such as the departments of Homeland Security and Transportation. Essential functions will continue, but workers could go without pay if the impasse drags on.

The Carolinas emerge as new population boom states. Affordability and lifestyle drive growth

North Carolina and South Carolina have become two hot spots for growth in the United States. North Carolina was the top destination for domestic migrants in the U.S., attracting 84,000 people from other states last year. South Carolina had the highest overall growth rate at 1.5%. Florida, previously a top choice for domestic residents, fell to eighth place as more people chose to move elsewhere. Texas saw a year-to-year decrease in domestic migration, with 67,300 new domestic residents. North Carolina’s appeal includes its location, job opportunities and diverse landscapes. Despite changes in domestic migration, Texas and Florida still had the highest number of new residents overall.
