US life expectancy hit an all-time high in 2024, CDC says

U.S. life expectancy has hit the highest mark in American history. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday reported that life expectancy rose to 79 years in 2024. It’s the result of the dissipation of the COVID-19 pandemic — and also waning death rates from all of the nation’s top killers, including heart disease, cancer and drug overdoses. Preliminary statistics suggest a continued improvement in 2025. Life expectancy is an estimate of the average number of years a baby born in a given year might expect to live, given death rates at that time. It’s a fundamental measure of a population’s health.

FBI raid in Georgia highlights Trump’s 2020 election obsession and hints at possible future actions

Donald Trump lost his bid for reelection in 2020. But for more than five years, he’s been trying to convince Americans the opposite is true by falsely saying the election was marred by widespread fraud. Now that he’s president again, Trump is pushing the federal government to back up those bogus claims. On Wednesday, the FBI served a search warrant at the election headquarters of Fulton County, Georgia, which includes most of Atlanta, seeking ballots from the 2020 election. It marks an escalation of Trump’s obsession with the election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden, and some observers say his administration is using Georgia as a blueprint for challenging results this November.

A shadow network in Minneapolis defies ICE and protects immigrants

If there’s been a soundtrack to life in Minneapolis in recent weeks, it’s the shrieking whistles and honking horns of thousands of people following immigration agents across the city. They are the ever-moving shadow of Operation Metro Surge. They are teachers, scientists and stay-at-home parents. They own small businesses and wait tables. And when the White House shifted to a more conciliatory tone after the weekend killing of Alex Pretti, holding talks with local and state that President Donald Trump had long disdained and pushing aside Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol senior official who had become public face of the immigration crackdown, it was quickly clear no one was giving up.

Trump facing growing cultural revolt against immigration crackdown

President Donald Trump is facing a growing cultural revolt against his immigration crackdown. The backlash has extended beyond the partisans and activists. It’s beginning to break out across the business, sports and entertainment worlds as well. Bruce Springsteen released a new song on Wednesday that slammed “Trump’s federal thugs.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told employees that ICE’s actions have gone too far. And America’s sweetheart, Martha Stewart, lamented that “we can be attacked and even killed by federal troops.” The growing opposition threatens to undermine Trump’s signature domestic priority, the Republican Party’s grip on power and the president’s political strength — in the short-term at least.

Republicans fear their midterm chances are slipping away over immigration chaos

Republicans are increasingly worried about immigration enforcement becoming a political problem in the upcoming midterm elections. Concerns have grown after two people were killed by federal agents during President Donald Trump’s crackdown in Minneapolis. Although few Republicans are willing to publicly break with Trump, criticism is mounting. Congress faces a funding deadline this week, and Democrats are ready to block money for Homeland Security. Some Republicans, like Sen. Thom Tillis, are urging a change in direction. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is facing criticism, with some calling for her resignation. The situation is escalating as Republicans try to navigate the political fallout.

EPA plan would begin rolling back ‘good neighbor’ rule on downwind pollution from smokestacks

The Trump administration is taking a step toward rolling back a rule that limits smokestack emissions that burden downwind areas in neighboring states. The so-called “good neighbor” rule is intended to block coal-fired power plants and other industrial sites from adding significantly to air pollution across state lines. The rule is one of dozens of regulations that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin has targeted for reconsideration or repeal. The EPA said Wednesday it is proposing to approve plans by eight states to regulate ozone air pollution as they see fit. Environmental groups said the EPA proposal would reward states for being bad neighbors.

Anti-tax advocates are pushing to eliminate property taxes for homeowners. Rising property values have increased tax bills, but ending these taxes could cost states billions. North Dakota is using oil money to phase out taxes. On Wednesday, Georgia Republicans proposed eliminating homeowner property taxes by 2032. Florida and Texas are considering similar moves. Critics worry about funding for schools and local services. These efforts echo past tax revolts, like California’s Proposition 13. The challenge is finding replacement revenue without harming essential services. The Georgia plan would force schools and governments to rely more on sales taxes. Its path to passage is long.

Pyari arrived at the center in November with injuries likely from a predator, possibly a shark. The turtle had wounds on its flippers, neck, and shell. The center is tracking the turtles via satellite tags to study their behavior. This is especially important for understanding the success of three-limbed turtles after rehabilitation.

Employers have initiated layoffs across sectors — with many pointing to rising operational costs that span from President Donald Trump’s barrage of new tariffs and inflation. Others are reducing their workforces as they redirect money to artificial intelligence, often baked into wider corporate restructuring.

IRS faces stiff challenges in 2026 tax season due to workforce cuts and new laws, a watchdog says

The national taxpayer advocate says the 2026 tax filing season is likely to face significant challenges due to IRS workforce reductions and complex tax law changes. National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins released her annual report to Congress on Wednesday, two days after the start of the 2026 season. The IRS has seen a 27% reduction in staff since the start of President Donald Trump’s second Republican administration. The agency also is dealing with leadership turnover and implementation of new tax laws. Trump endorses Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in Wisconsin’s open race for governor

President Donald Trump has endorsed U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany in Wisconsin’s open race for governor. Tuesday’s endorsement solidifies the congressman’s front-runner status in the Republican primary in the battleground state. It also bolstered Democrats’ attempts to tie Tiffany to unpopular elements of the president’s agenda. Federal Reserve may keep rates unchanged for months as economy shows signs of health

Federal Reserve officials are expected to keep their short-term interest rate unchanged Wednesday after three cuts last year, ignoring huge pressure for lower borrowing costs from the White House in favor of waiting to see how the economy evolves. A key issue that Chair Jerome Powell will likely address at his news conference Wednesday is how long the Fed will remain on hold. The rate-setting committee remains split between those officials opposed to further cuts until inflation comes down, and those who want to lower rates to further support hiring. In December, just 12 of the 19 participants in the committee’s meetings supported at least one more rate cut this year.

Being a night owl may not be great for your heart but you can do something about it

Being a night owl can be bad for your heart. That’s according to a study showing night owls had poorer overall cardiovascular health than most people, plus a modestly higher risk of a first heart attack or stroke. Unhealthy behaviors like too little sleep, smoking and a poor diet were key reasons. The body’s circadian rhythm, or internal clock, governs when people feel sleepy and awake. Researchers say night owls will have to work harder on healthy behaviors like getting enough sleep in a morning person’s world — but the health advice is good for everyone.
