Indiana adds to celebration as football champs take victory lap and basketball team beats Purdue

Indiana Hoosiers fans got their dream doubleheader Tuesday night. First, they watched college football’s new national champions take one more victory lap. Then they saw Indiana’s basketball team take its cue by keeping the momentum rolling and holding off its top rival, No. 12 Purdue, for the squad’s biggest win of the season. For first-year coach Darian DeVries, it was his first glimpse of the rivalry and Assembly Hall at full throttle. And he credited those raucous fans with playing a key role in the latest chapter of Bloomington’s storybook sports year.

Detainees to testify about legal access at ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

Former detainees are set to testify about conditions at a Florida immigration detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” A federal judge is considering whether they have sufficient access to the legal system. Civil rights attorneys are seeking a temporary injunction to ensure detainees at the state-run Everglades facility have the same access to attorneys as those in federally-run centers. The lawsuit claims attorneys must schedule visits three days in advance, unlike other facilities where they can visit during hours. Delays have reportedly prevented detainees from meeting attorneys before key deadlines. The facility was built last summer by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration.

Three months after rapidly scheduled arguments, Supreme Court has yet to decide on Trump’s tariffs

When the Supreme Court granted an unusually quick hearing over President Donald Trump’s tariffs, a similarly fast resolution seemed possible. After all, Trump’s lawyers told the court speed was of the essence on an issue that is central to the president’s economic agenda. But nearly three months have elapsed since arguments in the closely watched case and the court isn’t scheduled to meet in public for more than three weeks. No one knows for sure what is going on among the nine justices. But the timeline for deciding the tariffs case now looks more or less typical and could reflect the normal back-and-forth that occurs not just in the biggest cases, but almost all the disputes the justices hear.

Talks with Tampa officials continue, but details about the new stadium remain sparse. The Rays’ current stadium suffered damage from Hurricane Milton in 2024, forcing them to play at Steinbrenner Field. The team’s new ownership is led by Patrick Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove and Ken Babby.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to warn that the Trump administration is ready to take new military action against Venezuela if the country’s interim leadership strays from U.S. expectations. Rubio will testify Wednesday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to prepared testimony, Rubio plans to say the U.S. isn’t at war with Venezuela but the Trump administration wouldn’t rule out using additional force if needed following the ouster of former President Nicolás Maduro. Rubio will defend Trump’s decisions to remove Maduro, strike suspected drug boats and seize sanctioned tankers carrying Venezuelan oil. Democrats have condemned the actions as exceeding President Donald Trump’s authority.

Trump warns Iraq against returning former PM al-Maliki to power amid worries about Iran influence

President Donald Trump is warning Iraqi officials that the U.S. would no longer support the country if its former prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, returns to power. Trump made the threat on Tuesday, days after a dominant political bloc known as the Coordination Framework announced it had backed al-Maliki. Trump derided al-Maliki’s previous stewardship of Iraq and warned the U.S. “will no longer help Iraq” if he returns to power. The United States has long viewed al-Maliki as being too close to Iran. Iraq held elections in November but its caretaker prime minister was unable to form a government. That cleared the field for al-Maliki.

Trump administration announces 15 new drugs for Medicare price negotiation program

The Trump administration has unveiled 15 new drugs selected for a Medicare drug price negotiation program that allows the federal government to haggle directly with drug manufacturers. The drugs announced Tuesday include treatments for Type 2 diabetes, HIV, arthritis and various other conditions. The neurotoxin Botox, which is often used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, will also be part of negotiations, but only for medical uses covered by Medicare. The announcement signals the start of a third round of negotiations under a 2022 law that has already resulted in lower prices for 25 drugs. Because the program targets some of the drugs on which Medicare spends the most money, it has the potential to deliver significant savings to taxpayers.

A man on trial for bludgeoning four men to death with a metal bar as they slept on the New York City streets had been diagnosed with schizophrenia when he left jail months earlier and was hearing voices telling him he needed to kill 40 people or he would die too. That is what Randy Santos’ lawyer told jurors on Tuesday during opening statements in his first-degree murder trial. Santos is asserting an insanity defense. Through his lawyers, he has acknowledged committing the 2019 Chinatown rampage. But, they argue, he is not criminally responsible because mental illness has polluted his mind with irrational thoughts and left him prone to violence. If they succeed, Santos could be sent to a psychiatric treatment facility instead of prison.

Gavin Newsom scoffed at the idea that the federal government could issue local rebuilding permits. The Associated Press has found that fewer than a dozen of the area homes had been rebuilt as of early January.
