Jaden Bradley added 26 points for the Wildcats, who improved to 21-0 and matched the best start in school history. BYU trailed by 19 midway through the second half before trimming the deficit to one with a 12-2 run that began with just more than a minute left. Robert Wright III had a chance to put the Cougars ahead, but Burries came flying over from the weak side to block the shot from behind.

Trump to visit Iowa in an effort to focus on affordability amid fallout from Minneapolis shooting

President Donald Trump is heading to Iowa as the White House tries to focus on affordability ahead of the midterm elections despite fallout over the administration’s immigration crackdown. While there, Trump will visit a local business and deliver a speech at the Horizon Events Center in Clive. Tuesday’s trip also highlights energy policy as part of a plan to have Trump travel weekly before the elections. This visit comes amid the Trump administration’s handling of the shooting death of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota. Republicans hope Trump’s visit will refocus attention on the tax bill, a key part of their campaign strategy.

Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Troublemaker’ lets Nelson Mandela speak for himself

Antoine Fuqua’s new documentary, “Troublemaker,” explores Nelson Mandela’s life beyond his iconic status. Premiering Tuesday at the Sundance Film Festival, the film reveals Mandela as a rebel, at least at first. Fuqua uses Mandela’s voice from over 70 hours of recordings to tell the story of the fight against apartheid. He collaborated with Mac Maharaj, an anti-apartheid activist who helped smuggle Mandela’s writings out of prison. Fuqua traveled across South Africa, visiting key locations in Mandela’s life, and learned about the resilience and optimism of those who fought for justice.

Trump administration’s trust and credibility tested in wake of Pretti’s death in Minneapolis

Lawmakers in both parties are calling for investigations following the killing of Alex Jeffrey Pretti by a U.S. Border Patrol officer. Some warn that the credibility of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security is at stake. Videos from the scene show Pretti being pushed by an officer, contradicting initial claims that he acted violently. The White House has tried to ease tensions, with President Donald Trump and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz having a productive conversation. Lawmakers from both parties are urging independent investigations and emphasizing the importance of trust. The situation highlights ongoing challenges with credibility in the Trump administration.

Giants and outfielder Harrison Bader agree to $20.5 million, 2-year contract, AP source says

Free agent outfielder Harrison Bader and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a $20.5 million, two-year contract. That’s according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical and had not been announced. The 31-year-old Bader batted .277 with 17 home runs, 54 RBIs and a .796 OPS in 146 combined games with Minnesota and Philadelphia last season — setting career highs in all those categories. He was especially productive for the NL East champion Phillies after they acquired him at the July 31 trade deadline.

Trump’s about-face in Minnesota after Pretti’s death is latest in pattern of sudden shifts

President Donald Trump is taking a more conciliatory approach with Democratic leaders in Minnesota. This change follows the second fatal shooting of a protester by federal agents this month. The incident has raised doubts about the administration’s aggressive deportation tactics — including from some Republicans. On Monday, Trump spoke with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, saying they were now on a “similar wavelength.” This marks a sharp U-turn from Trump’s previous personal attacks on Walz. It’s not the first time Trump has initially taken a maximalist position only to later retreat. This month, he has backtracked on threats over tariffs and on military action against Iran.

Republicans appeal decision that threw out NYC’s only GOP-controlled House district

New York’s congressional redistricting battle is headed to the state’s highest court. Republicans on Monday appealed a judge’s decision to toss the lines of New York City’s only GOP-controlled House seat, asking the state’s high court to take up a case that could have national reverberations in the fight for control of Congress. The appeal came just days after a lower court judge ruled U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis’ Staten Island and Brooklyn district was drawn in a way that dilutes the power of its Black and Hispanic voters. The case was filed by an election law firm aligned with the Democratic Party, coming as part of a national gerrymandering fight.

What we know about the investigations into the Minneapolis shooting death of Alex Pretti

The fatal shooting of Minneapolis man Alex Pretti by federal immigration officers has sparked calls for an independent investigation. The Trump administration has launched three federal probes, but details remain unclear. Tensions are high in Minneapolis, with conflicting narratives about the incident. The FBI is assisting in processing evidence, but there’s no indication their Civil Rights Division intends to investigate Pretti’s case. The incident highlights mistrust between state officials and the Trump administration over the investigation. Minnesota’s governor, in a call with President Donald Trump, said he called for impartial investigations.

The shootings in Minneapolis are upending the politics of immigration in Congress

The shooting deaths of two American citizens at the hands of federal law enforcement in Minneapolis have upended the politics of the Trump administration’s deportation agenda. Democrats have awakened to what they see as a moral moment for the country. At the same time, Republicans who have championed President Donald Trump’s tough approach to immigration are signaling second thoughts. It all comes as Congress faces a Friday deadline to approve funding for Homeland Security and other agencies or risk a partial shutdown. Democrats say they won’t provide the security funds without restraints and changes to the immigration and deportation operation.

The military said 116 people were killed immediately in at least 36 attacks carried out since early September. Ten others are believed dead because searchers didn’t locate them. Eight of those presumed dead jumped off boats when American forces attacked a trio of vessels in late December. The number wasn’t released previously. The military said when announcing those strikes that the U.S. Coast Guard had searched for survivors.

The Los Angeles Rams could return next season with nearly every important contributor to a team that fell just a few big plays short of another trip to the Super Bowl, and they have the resources to add even more playmakers. That doesn’t make the current players feel any better about their agonizing 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC title game. These Rams realize they had a team good enough to be something truly special. Yet their future still looks bright, with nearly every important player on the current team able to return if the Rams desire.

Scientists recover the oldest wooden tools from a site in Greece

Scientists say two artifacts found at a lake shore in Greece are the oldest wooden tools uncovered so far. One is a spindly stick possibly used for digging and the other is a handheld chunk that may have been used to shape stone tools. They were found in Greece’s Megalopolis basin and date back 430,000 years. Scientists think early humans wielded tools made from stone, bone and wood. But it’s particularly difficult to find evidence of wooden tools today because wood rots so quickly. Information about the artifacts was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

Mysterious dark matter may be better understood through a new map of far-off galaxies

A new high-resolution map of distant galaxies may help scientists understand the mysterious dark matter holding the universe together. For decades, researchers have hoped to demystify what’s known as dark matter: an invisible substance that comprises just over a quarter of our universe. Scientists can’t study it directly, but they can observe how it warps the star stuff around it. In the latest study, they charted hundreds of thousands of galaxies over 10 billion years, creating one of the most detailed maps to date. Scientists can study it to see how dark matter has clumped up over time. The study was published Monday in Nature Astronomy.

What to know about breast self-awareness and how it fits into cancer prevention

Breast self-awareness is a more flexible approach to preventing breast cancer that goes along with other essential screening measures. Two decades ago, doctors began recommending breast self-awareness as an alternative to self-exams — the monthly, methodical checks for changes to breast size or shape while applying pressure or lying down. Instead, they now suggest staying aware of how the breasts look and feel while going about daily life and reporting any changes to the doctor. It’s also important to maintain normal screening routines, including having mammograms yearly or every other year starting at age 40.

Japanese American soldiers once branded ‘enemy aliens’ to be promoted posthumously

Seven Japanese American soldiers are being promoted to officer ranks in a solemn ceremony that comes eight decades after they died fighting for the U.S. during World War II. The men were students at the University of Hawaii and cadets in the Reserve Officer Training Corps, on track to become Army officers, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Soon after the attack, the U.S. barred those with Japanese ancestry from American military service and deemed them “enemy aliens.” In 1943 the Army created a segregated combat team for Japanese American soldiers, and they joined. But they were killed fighting in Europe and never had the chance to become officers. The ceremony is Monday.
