Rams’ McVay and Stafford lament missed opportunities as they fall short of Super Bowl

Sean McVay had zero interest in discussing whether Matthew Stafford, his soon-to-be 38-year-old quarterback, will be back for the Los Angeles Rams next year. McVay had a bit more to say about how his team came up short against the Seattle Seahawks yet again on Sunday, losing 31-27 in the NFC championship game. The Rams lost twice in a two-month span at Seattle, falling 38-37 in December when the Seahawks converted two 2-point conversions in regulation and a third in overtime. This loss denied the Rams a chance of winning the franchise’s third Super Bowl and the second and five years for McVay and Stafford.

Judge set to hear arguments on Minnesota’s immigration crackdown after fatal shootings

A federal judge is set to hear arguments Monday on whether to pause an immigration crackdown in Minnesota. This follows the fatal shootings of two people by government officers. The state and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul sued the Department of Homeland Security two weeks ago. They want to restore conditions before the Trump administration’s Operation Metro Surge began in December. Democratic Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison plans to attend the hearing. Justice Department attorneys have called the lawsuit legally frivolous. The case could have implications for other states facing similar immigration enforcement operations like that underway in Minnesota.

Sam Darnold and Seahawks advance to Super Bowl with thrilling 31-27 win over Rams in NFC title game

Sam Darnold threw for three touchdowns, the Seahawks’ “Dark Side” defense came up with a critical fourth-down stop, and Seattle advanced to the Super Bowl, beating the Los Angeles Rams 31-27 in an electrifying NFC championship game. Led by second-year coach Mike Macdonald and Darnold, the Seahawks reached the fourth Super Bowl in franchise history and first in 11 years. Seattle lost that most recent appearance to New England, and the Patriots will again be the Seahawks’ opponent in two weeks at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Matthew Stafford threw for 374 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams, but the Seahawks broke up his pass to the end zone on fourth-and-4 late in the fourth quarter.

Sean Payton has second thoughts about passing up easy field goal in Broncos’ AFC title game loss

Sean Payton says he’ll have second thoughts about his decision to pass up an easy field goal, as well as the play he called instead. The Denver Broncos and their fans now have the entire offseason to argue over which part of that critical fourth-and-1 play was worse. Payton decided not to kick a chip-shot field goal for a 10-0 lead in good weather in the first half of Sunday’s AFC championship game against the New England Patriots. As a result, the Broncos ended up needing to make a kick once the blowing snow and wind rolled in after halftime. The decision played an integral role in Denver’s 10-7 loss.

Trump, unbowed by backlash to Minneapolis shooting, blames Democrats for ‘chaos’

The fatal shooting of a Minneapolis protester by a federal immigration officer touched off a firestorm and prompted some fellow Republicans to question President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration crackdown, but the president on Sunday night doubled down and blamed Democratic officials. After remaining relatively quiet on Sunday, the Republican president in two lengthy social media posts said that Democrats had encouraged people to obstruct law enforcement operations. He also called on officials in Minnesota to work with immigration officers and “turn over” people who were in the U.S. illegally.

The District of Columbia’s longtime delegate is closing out her career in Congress. Eleanor Holmes Norton filed paperwork Sunday to terminate her campaign for reelection. The 88-year-old veteran of the Civil Rights Movement is the oldest member of Congress. The 18-term delegate has been an advocate for her city’s interests in Congress since 1991. But her effectiveness as the district’s sole voice in Congress came under scrutiny after President Donald Trump’s intervention in the city last year. Norton’s retirement opens up a likely competitive primary to replace her in the overwhelmingly Democratic city.

Democrats vow to oppose homeland security funding bill. That increases the chance of a shutdown

Democratic senators are vowing to oppose a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security following the shooting death of a man in Minnesota. And that opposition increases the prospect of a partial government shutdown by week’s end. Six of the 12 annual spending bills for the current budget year have been signed into law. Six more await Senate action. If senators fail to act by midnight Friday, funding for agencies covered under those remaining six bills will lapse. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer says what’s happening in Minnesota is “appalling” and he’s pledging that Democrats will block a funding package that includes homeland security money.

Some Republicans express concern over the tactics used in Minnesota and urge shooting investigation

Some Republicans are expressing growing concern about the tactics that federal immigration officials are using in Minnesota. They’re speaking out after a U.S. Border Patrol agent fatally shot a man in Minneapolis on Saturday. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt say the death of Alex Pretti, a nurse who was protesting President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, was a “real tragedy.” Stitt tells CNN that Americans are worried about federal tactics and accountability. Sleep-tracking devices have limits. Experts want users to know what they are

Millions of people rely on wearable devices to monitor how well they’re sleeping. Sleep trackers don’t necessarily measure sleep directly but instead infer states of slumber from signals like heart rate and movement. Experts say it’s therefore important to understand what the devices can and cannot measure. A University of Michigan math professor who researches the science behind sleep wearables says the algorithms used by major brands are highly accurate in determining when someone is asleep and somewhat helpful for estimating sleep stages. But a neurologist at the Morehouse School of Medicine says some wearers become fixated on their sleep scores. There’s even a medical term for an unhealthy obsession with ideal sleep: orthosomnia.

Longtime festivalgoers say the final Sundance in Utah may also be their last

A common question that has emerged from this year’s Sundance Film Festival is: ““Will you still go to the festival when it moves to Boulder?” Several festivalgoers who have been attending for decades say the final Sundance in Utah may also be their last. Some pointed to founder Robert Redford’s recent death as a reason to close a chapter. Others said Sundance won’t be the same festival outside its charming mountain hometown of Park City. Redford’s daughter, Amy Redford, said she’s excited about the transition but is glad the development programs her father established for emerging filmmakers will be staying in Utah.
