Luka Doncic’s emotions ease in 2nd Dallas visit as Lakers star beats his former team again

Luka Doncic walked toward the wrong locker at halftime before a quick U-turn by the Los Angeles Lakers star in his second trip to Dallas. Hey, at least he wasn’t weeping on the bench before the game against the Mavericks, or still trying to process the emotions of the shocking trade that sent him to the Lakers almost a year ago. A big fourth-quarter rally by the Lakers in a 116-110 victory over Dallas was a nice bonus for Doncic. He also took another step toward the rest of his career with a visit to his first NBA city that wasn’t nearly as emotional as his return last April.

Charles Bediako scored two quick baskets for No. 17 Alabama in his first college action in nearly three years against Tennessee. The 7-footer checked into the game with 16:11 to play in the first half and got a rousing ovation. He scored on a dunk and a layup in his first touches. The 23-year-old center played two days after a Tuscaloosa judge temporarily reinstated his college eligibility and blocked the NCAA from retaliating for his return. Bediako entered the NBA draft in 2023 but was not selected. He has signed several NBA developmental contracts since, including playing for the Motor City Cruise in the NBA’s G League as recently as last week.

From frigid quiet to outraged sorrow, a few hours on Minneapolis street where agents killed man

The morning started frigid and quiet on Minneapolis’ “Eat Street,” a stretch of road south of downtown famous for its small coffee shops and restaurants ranging from New American to Vietnamese. But around 9 a.m. Saturday, a federal immigration officer shot and killed a man there, about 1.5 miles from the scene of another fatal shooting of a local woman observing immigration operations earlier this month that sparked outrage and daily protests. And in just over an hour, anger exploded again in the city already on edge, where even before the current immigration enforcement surge networks of thousands of residents had organized to monitor and denounce it.

Trump housing finance chief OKs more mortgage spending and adds risk for government-backed lenders

President Donald Trump’s federal housing finance director, Bill Pulte, quietly granted government-backed lenders the authority to nearly double a $200 billion bond purchase that Trump ordered to try to lower mortgage rates. That’s according to an email obtained by The Associated Press. The move could introduce a new level of risk for the companies. The purchasing rule changes would reverse nearly two decades of bipartisan consensus that limits should be imposed after the government bailed out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008-09. That crisis led to to them being placed into a government conservatorship.

How a court win could help the Democrats pick up a House seat in New York

A judge’s decision to toss out the boundaries of the only Republican-held congressional district in New York City could help Democrats notch a win in the national redistricting wars — but for now, the outcome remains uncertain. The judge ordered new lines be drawn, and fast, with party primaries just five months away. But experts say that’s no simple task, and the Republicans have promised a legal appeal. The final shape of the district currently held by U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis could be unknown for some time but the result could be a more liberal district, easier for a Democrat to win.

Robert Redford remembered for his mentorship of new filmmakers at Sundance gala

Filmmakers whose careers were shaped by Robert Redford and the Sundance Institute he founded are honoring his legacy at the first Sundance Film Festival since his death. The 2026 festival is a love letter to the haven Redford established in Utah decades ago for stories that didn’t fit into the mainstream. His daughter said it was his Sundance Institute lab programs for writers and directors that brought him the most pride. Several program alumni and others who Redford mentored shared stories on stage Friday night at a star-studded gala honoring his legacy.
