Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo expects to miss extended time after injuring his calf again

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo thinks he will be out for an extended period after hurting his right calf again after a similar injury already caused him to miss eight games earlier this season. Antetokounmpo had his right calf wrapped in the first half of a 102-100 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. Antetokounmpo didn’t appear comfortable the rest of the night and left for good with 34 seconds remaining. The two-time MVP said he expected to undergo an MRI on Saturday. Denver’s Aaron Gordon scored 13 points in the first half before sitting out the second half with a right hamstring strain.

Trump administration’s defense strategy tells allies to handle their own security

The Pentagon has released a National Defense Strategy that chastises U.S. allies to take control of their own security and reasserts the Trump administration’s focus on dominance in the Western Hemisphere over a longtime goal of countering China. The document released late Friday is highly political for a military blueprint, criticizing partners from Europe to Asia for relying on previous U.S. administrations to subsidize their defense. It calls for “a sharp shift — in approach, focus, and tone.” That translates to a blunt assessment that allies must take on more of the burden countering nations from Russia to North Korea. It caps off a week of animosity between President Donald Trump’s administration and traditional allies like Europe.

FEMA extends housing aid for Maui wildfire survivors until 2027

U.S. officials have granted an extension for housing assistance to survivors of the 2023 wildfires in Hawaii, according to Gov. Josh Green. Nearly 1,000 households displaced by the fires were awaiting this decision. On Friday, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem approved Hawaii’s request to extend FEMA temporary housing assistance for Maui wildfire survivors until February 2027. The fires in Lahaina and Kula destroyed 2,200 structures and killed 102 people. The extension comes as few homes have been rebuilt, and rental inventory is nearly zero, making relocation difficult.

Guan Heng sought asylum in the United States after exposing human rights abuses in his native China. But he’s been in U.S. custody since being swept up in an immigration enforcement operation in August. On Monday, a judge is to consider his appeal to remain in the country. Guan’s case has gained public attention, including in Congress, and he remains hopeful that he’ll be allowed to stay. Despite his challenges, Guan tells The Associated Press in a phone call from a New York jail that he appreciates the U.S. democratic system. He is among tens of thousands of asylum seekers who have been swept up in the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts in the past year.

Sean McVay turns 40 with a new perspective on football and the same dreams for his Los Angeles Rams

Sean McVay will spend his 40th birthday on Saturday in the exact same way he spent the vast majority of his 30s. He’ll be preparing the Los Angeles Rams to play their hearts out. This year, he’ll be working to get the Rams ready for the NFC championship game against Seattle. If they win, he’ll become the youngest head coach to reach three Super Bowls. McVay has been the “youngest” and the “first” to a jaw-dropping number of accomplishments since he took over the Rams as a 30-year-old prodigy. He’s still at the top of his profession, but the father of two young sons has a new perspective on what that means.

Trump stirs talk of ‘new world order’ as leaders signal shifting global alliances

President Donald Trump has revoked an invitation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to join his Board of Peace. This decision follows Carney’s critical remarks about U.S. foreign policy. Trump also threatened tariffs on Switzerland and pressed Denmark to support U.S. control of Greenland. Critics say Trump’s actions are undermining the rules-based order that has governed U.S. foreign policy since World War II. Carney and other leaders are pushing back, advocating for a united front against Trump’s tactics. Concerns are growing that Trump’s approach could damage U.S. standing globally and strengthen ties between other countries and China.

Cameron Smotherman collapses after weighing in for UFC 324, fight with Ricky Turcios canceled

Bantamweight fighter Cameron Smotherman collapsed Friday afternoon immediately after weighing in and his bout with Ricky Turcios at UFC 324 was canceled. Smotherman made his way to the stage seemingly without any complications. But as he stepped onto the scale and successfully made weight at 135.5 pounds for Saturday’s event, his eyes appeared heavy, slowly blinking twice. He stepped off to his left, wobbling toward the stairs and falling face-first onto the stage in a scary moment. A UFC spokesperson said Smotherman was transported from T-Mobile Arena to a hospital for precautionary evaluations and is being discharged.

Texas Black man exonerated nearly 70 years after execution in case marked by racial bias

Officials have declared that a Texas Black man executed nearly 70 years ago is innocent in a case prosecutors now say was based on false evidence and riddled with racial bias. Tommy Lee Walker was executed in the electric chair in May 1956 for the rape and murder of Venice Parker, a white woman.  An extensive review of Walker’s case by the Dallas County Criminal District Attorney’s Office and others found multiple problems with his conviction. The review found Walker was subjected to threatening and coercive interrogation tactics and prosecutors presented misleading and inadmissible evidence at trial. During a meeting Wednesday, Dallas County commissioners unanimously passed a symbolic resolution declaring Walker was wrongfully convicted and executed.

California sues the Trump administration over plans to restart oil pipelines along the coast

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is suing the Trump administration for approving an oil company’s plans to restart two oil pipelines along the state’s coast. Bonta says the federal government unlawfully approved Sable Offshore Corp.’s plans because California has authority over the pipelines that run through Santa Barbara and Kern counties. The Trump administration did not immediately respond for comment. The lawsuit escalates a fight over the president’s efforts to boost U.S. fossil fuel production. It comes after the federal government announced plans for new oil drilling off the California and Florida coasts.

Last month, he ended his five-year retirement and finished the season with the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers was the fourth candidate to interview since the Bills launched their search on Wednesday. Sean McDermott was fired Monday after going 98-50 and reaching the playoffs eight times in nine seasons.

Florida sets execution date for man convicted of killing a grocery store owner

A man convicted of killing a Tampa Bay-area grocery store owner during a robbery is set to become Florida’s second execution of 2026. A death warrant was signed Friday by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who signed off on a record 19 executions last year. Melvin Trotter is scheduled to die by lethal injection Feb. 24 at Florida State Prison. DeSantis oversaw more executions in a single year in 2025 than any other Florida governor since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The previous record was set in 2014 with eight executions. Trotter was initially convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death in 1987. The Florida Supreme Court later ordered a new sentencing, and Trotter was resentenced to death in 1993.

A look at the US military assets heading to the Middle East

The Pentagon has been sending U.S. military assets into the Middle East, including an aircraft carrier group and its thousands of troops. President Donald Trump has indicated he’s maintaining the possibility of strikes on Iran amid the government’s crackdown on protests. He said Thursday that the “massive fleet” was heading that way “just in case.” Trump had threatened military action if Iran carried out mass executions of prisoners or killed peaceful demonstrators, but recently had backed away. The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three accompanying destroyers are en route, and the F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet has a presence. Analysts of flight-tracking data also have noticed dozens of U.S. military cargo planes heading to the region.

Drake Maye has a chance to accomplish something not even Tom Brady did with the Patriots. Maye is hoping to beat the Broncos in the AFC championship game in Denver on Sunday and lead New England to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018. The Patriots have never won a playoff game in Denver. They’ve lost all four tries, with Brady going 0-3. New England and Denver both finished 14-3 in the regular season, but the Broncos won the tiebreaker for home-field advantage because the Patriots lost to the worst team in the NFL, the Las Vegas Raiders, in the first game of the Mike Vrabel era.

The Justice Department says in a sharply worded court filing that a report by former special counsel Jack Smith on his investigation into President Donald Trump’s hoarding of classified documents belongs in the “dustbin of history” and should remain sealed. The department’s position echoes that of Trump, whose lawyers this week asked U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to permanently block the release of the Smith report. It marks a stark but expected reversal from the posture taken by President Joe Biden’s Justice Department, which had supported the release of the investigative report.

But exactly what American users will see on their TikTok feeds once the changeover happens remains unclear. The algorithm powering the U.S. backend will be retrained on U.S. user data. The act of retraining the content recommendation formula is certain to at least have subtle changes to a users’ feeds.

The Islamic Republic’s government blocked internet access on Jan. 8 as nationwide protests led to a crackdown on information sharing. President Donald Trump says his threats on Iran have prevented the execution of 800 dissidents. Iran’s top prosecutor calls Trump’s claims “completely false.”
