Somali businesses struggle during the Minneapolis ICE crackdown

Business owners in a Minneapolis Somali mall are feeling the impact of an immigration crackdown. The usually bustling Karmel Mall is now quiet, with many shops closed. While many immigrants say their businesses have been impacted, the Somali community has been a specific target of the Trump administration. Elephant seals return to Año Nuevo State Park. Visitors watch battling bulls and 75-pound pups

Every winter, about 10,000 elephant seals make their way to California’s Año Nuevo State Park, to fight, mate and give birth. The spectacle runs from mid-December through March, drawing wildlife watchers eager for a glimpse of the largest seals on the planet. Park docent Laura Stern says it is all part of pupping season, when the long-nosed bull seals engage in bloody battles for breeding access to the females. Elephant seals were hunted nearly to extinction in the 1800s, sought out for their blubber, which was used to make oil. Recognizing the crisis, the Mexican government extended legal protection to the species in 1922. Today the population has grown to an estimated 250,000 seals living in the Pacific.

A third round of retaliatory strikes by the U.S. in Syria has resulted in the death of an Al-Qaeda-affiliated leader. U.S. Central Command says Bilal Hasan al-Jasim had a direct tie to the Islamic State member responsible for last month’s ambush that killed two U.S. soldiers and one American civilian interpreter in the country. It was the latest strike as part of a broader U.S. operation by President Donald Trump to target “ISIS thugs” trying to regroup after the ouster of autocratic leader Bashar Assad a year ago. Trump has stressed that Syria is fighting alongside American troops as the U.S. military is expanding its cooperation with security forces as part of a coalition fighting the militant group.

Board of Peace for Gaza is forming with ambitions for a wider mandate of other conflicts

President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” that was initially seen as a mechanism focused on ending the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza is taking shape with ambitions to have a far broader mandate of other global crises. It could mean potentially rivaling the United Nations in what would be a major upheaval to the post-World War II international order. In letters sent Friday to various world leaders inviting them to be “founding members” of the board, Trump says the body would “embark on a bold new approach to resolving global conflict.” Leaders from Argentina, Paraguay, Canada, Egypt and Turkey have been invitated to join the board, according to their governments.

AP obtains documents showing Venezuelan leader Delcy RodrĂguez has been on DEA’s radar for years

The Associated Press has learned that Delcy RodrĂguez, Venezuela’s acting president, has been on the radar of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for years and in 2022 was even labeled a “priority target,” a designation DEA reserves for suspects believed to have a “significant impact” on the drug trade. That’s according to records obtained by the AP and more than a half dozen current and former U.S. law enforcement officials. U.S. President Donald Trump identified RodrĂguez as America’s preferred partner to stabilize Venezuela after the U.S. military’s audacious capture of her predecessor, Nicollás Maduro, who now faces drug trafficking charges in the U.S.

As Trump’s deadline for a cap on credit card rates looms, banks have only questions and no answers

President Donald Trump has demanded a 10% cap on credit card interest rates by January 20. Consumer groups, politicians, and bankers remain unclear about the White House’s plans. The White House has not detailed consequences for non-compliance. Researchers estimate Americans could save $100 billion annually if rates are capped. However, banks might lose significant revenue. Shares of major credit card companies have fallen as investors worry about profit impacts. Without a law or executive order, Trump may rely on public pressure to enforce the cap. Some companies, like fintech Bilt, have already announced promotional rate caps.

How abortion coverage threatens to prevent a congressional deal on health care subsidies

There’s broad bipartisan support in Congress for reviving federal health care subsidies that expired at the beginning of the year. But long-running disagreements over abortion coverage are threatening to block any compromise and leave millions of Americans with higher premiums. Bipartisan Senate negotiations on the subsidies appear to be near collapse as the abortion dispute seems intractable. Republicans are seeking stronger curbs on abortion coverage for people who purchase insurance off the marketplaces created by the Affordable Care Act. Democrats have strongly opposed any such changes.

Here’s where Trump’s most jaw-dropping promises stand a year into his second term

President Donald Trump has made lots of promises during the first year of his second term in the White House. Some ideas have come to fruition. Others have faded away. Some are kicking around. These include a new Air Force One gifted by Qatar and the U.S. annexation of Greenland. Trump has also ordered an investigation into Joe Biden’s use of the autopen. Trump talked up reopening Alcatraz for detainees and extending mortgage terms to 50 years, but there’s been little progress. And some ideas have lost steam. That’s the case with making Canada the 51st state and eliminating the federal income tax.

Trump’s protectionist trade policies allow China to swoop in

America’s top trading partners are responding to President Donald Trump’s trade policies by trying to take their business elsewhere. Canada broke with the United States Friday, slashing its 100% import tax on Chinese electric vehicles in return for lower tariffs on Canadian farm products. Canada is not alone in looking for alternatives to America’s massive market. The European Union is expected to formally sign trade pact Saturday with the South American alliance known as Mercosur, which includes the region’s two biggest economies, Brazil and Argentina. China, pounded by U.S. tariffs since Trump’s first term, has diversified its exports away the world’s biggest economy to markets such as Europe and Southeast Asia.
