Kansas has shown what it can do with a healthy Darryn Peterson and a regular rotation. The timing couldn’t have been worse for second-ranked Iowa State. After falling from the AP Top 25 following a second loss in their first three Big 12 games, the Jayhawks roared away from the stunned Cyclones on Tuesday night. Peterson scored 16 points and Tre White led the Jayhawks with 19. It was the kind of performance that college basketball fans are accustomed to seeing from coach Bill Self’s Jayhawks over the years.

Senate readies vote on Venezuela war powers as Trump pressures GOP defectors

Senate Republicans are facing intense pressure from President Donald Trump to vote down a war powers resolution that is aimed at limiting the president’s ability to carry out further military action against Venezuela. Five GOP senators joined with Democrats to advance the resolution last week. Democrats are forcing the vote after U.S. troops captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a surprise nighttime raid earlier this month. The legislation has virtually no chance of becoming law because it would eventually need to be signed by Trump himself. But the vote has become a test of Republican loyalty to the president.

Proposed billionaires’ tax in California rattles Silicon Valley, entangles Gov. Newsom

A proposal to tax the accumulated wealth of California billionaires has ignited a political uproar in Silicon Valley and across the state. A large health care union is attempting to place a proposal before voters in November that would impose a one-time 5% tax on the assets of billionaires. The money would be used to backfill federal funding cuts to health services for lower-income people that were signed by President Donald Trump last year. Such proposals are popular within Democratic constituencies. But there are fears that billionaires could flee the state and take their tax dollars with them. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to block the measure.

Trump has also expanded U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts, targeting Cuba and Iran. Trump insists he is fulfilling his promises, while Democrats criticize his handling of the economy and his power grabs.

Wildlife crews stop actively searching for young wolves after livestock attacks

Wildlife crews have stopped actively searching for two juvenile gray wolves in Northern California’s Sierra Valley. These wolves were part of the Beyem Seyo pack, which preyed on livestock last summer, alarming residents and frustrating ranchers. Last year, the pack killed or injured at least 92 calves and cows. In October, officials euthanized four wolves from the pack after livestock attacks that they called “unprecedented.” Despite efforts to capture the remaining wolves, officials have not succeeded. Ranchers are frustrated and suggest allowing people to hunt wolves that attack livestock. Gray wolves are protected under California’s Endangered Species Act.

In a court filing Tuesday co-signed by Attorney General Pam Bondi, the officials argued that nothing in that judge’s order prohibits Halligan from acting as U.S. Attorney or using that title. Trump pressures Iran with tariffs that could raise prices in the US

President Donald Trump has once again drawn his go-to diplomatic weapon — tariffs — to coerce the Iranian government to end its bloody crackdown on nationwide protests. Trump said he is imposing a 25% tax on imports to the United States from countries that do business with Iran. The sanctions could hurt the Islamic Republic by reducing its access to foreign goods and driving up prices in a country already contending with inflation running above 40%. But the tariffs could create blowback for the United States, too, potentially raising the prices Americans pay for imports from Iranian trade partners such as Turkey and India and threatening an uneasy trade truce Trump reached last year with China.

Fewer Americans are signing up for Affordable Care Act health insurance plans this year. New federal data shows a 3.5% drop in enrollment, with around 800,000 fewer people selecting plans compared to last year. This decline is linked to expiring subsidies and rising health expenses. The data, released Monday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, includes sign-ups through early January. Experts warn enrollment may drop further as people receive their first bills. Congress is debating extending the subsidies, with Democrats pushing for an extension and Republicans seeking broader reforms. Many Americans are considering alternatives or going without insurance.

Wall Street’s relationship with the Trump administration is souring. Bank executives warned the White House on Tuesday that President Trump’s policies and the Justice Department’s investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell could harm the economy. BNY CEO Robin Vince criticized attacks on the Fed’s independence, saying it could raise interest rates. Trump is also targeting the credit card industry, proposing a 10% cap on interest rates. Researchers say a cap could cost banks $100 billion annually. JPMorgan CFO Jeffrey Barnum said such actions could reduce credit supply, hurting consumers and the economy.

EPA says it will stop calculating the economic savings to health in key air pollution rules

The Environmental Protection Agency says it will stop calculating the economic savings of health benefits from air pollution rules. The change means the agency will focuses only on industry costs. It aligns with President Donald Trump’s business-friendly approach. On Monday, the agency stated it remains committed to health protection but won’t monetize impacts now. Environmental and public health advocates called the agency’s action a dangerous abdication of one of its core missions. Since the EPA’s creation more than 50 years ago, Republican and Democratic administrations have used different estimates to assign monetary value to a human life in cost-benefit analyses.

The vast Arctic island is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said earlier Tuesday that U.S. Vice President JD Vance will host a meeting with him and his Greenlandic counterpart in Washington this week.

Trump cancels meetings with Iranian officials and tells protesters ‘help is on its way’

President Trump says he’s canceled talks with Iranian officials amid a protest crackdown, telling Iranian citizens “help is on its way.” Trump did not offer any details about what the help would entail, but it comes after the Republican president earlier this week said Iran wants to negotiate with Washington after his threat to strike the Islamic Republic that has killed more than 2,000, according to human right monitors. But Trump with his latest message on social media Tuesday appeared to make an abrupt shift about his willingness to engage with the Iranian government. Trump says, “Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!”

Brooks Koepka is back on the PGA Tour because it’s better than leaving him off

The decision by the PGA Tour to allow Brooks Koepka to return from LIV Golf should have surprised no one. From the time Brian Rolapp took over as CEO, he’s made it clear his priority was to strengthen the PGA Tour. Whether Koepka does that depends on his performance. But the tour is better off with him playing than leaving him on the sideline. Koepka’s performance will be tied to the size of the financial repercussions he faces. Rolapp says there’s no promise of a path for other LIV players to return. That depends on whether they can help the tour.

Democrats will spend millions to shift voter registration strategy ahead of the midterm elections

The Democratic National Committee plans to spend millions of dollars to consolidate voter registration efforts, traditionally handled by nonprofits and individual campaigns. The initiative is being announced Tuesday and begins in Arizona and Nevada with at least $2 million for training organizers. The DNC says it could become its largest-ever push to sign up new voters, focusing on young people, people of color and those without college educations. These groups drifted away from Democrats in the last presidential race. DNC Chair Ken Martin says the party needs more Democrats to win elections. The program will also coordinate national days of action and encourage state parties to compete in voter registration efforts.

The Treasury and State departments announced the actions Tuesday against the Lebanese, Jordanian and Egyptian chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood, which they say pose a risk to the United States. The State Department designates the Lebanese branch a foreign terrorist organization, the most severe of the labels. This makes it a criminal offense to provide material support to the group. The Jordanian and Egyptian branches are listed by Treasury as specially designated global terrorists for providing support to Hamas. Muslim Brotherhood leaders have said they renounce violence.
