WNBA and players’ union fail to reach new CBA, negotiations continue without extension

The WNBA and its players’ union weren’t able to agree to a new collective bargaining agreement by the Friday night deadline, and now the league enters a “status-quo” period with no new extension reached. Negotiations will continue with the current CBA in effect. The league and the players had two previous extensions, with the most recent expiring Friday night. The sides have met several times this week, but are still far apart on many key issues, including salary structure and revenue-sharing.

Dante Moore and the Oregon Ducks self-destruct in 56-22 Peach Bowl loss to No. 1 Indiana

The very first snap of the Peach Bowl pretty much summed up what kind of night it would be for Oregon. A pick-6 put Dante Moore and the Ducks in an immediate hole. That was only the beginning of their misery. No. 1 Indiana romped into the national championship game with a 56-22 blowout of fifth-seeded Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal in Atlanta. This was a one-sided affair that was essentially over by the time the Ducks dragged themselves to the locker room at the half, trailing 35-7 after turning the ball over three times. All three led to Indiana touchdowns.

New York attorney general sues Trump administration over offshore wind project freeze

New York’s attorney general has sued the Trump administration for halting two major offshore wind projects expected to power more than 1 million homes. State Attorney General Letitia James said last month’s order by the federal Department of the Interior to halt the projects was arbitrary and unwarranted. The department cited national security concerns in the Dec. 22 order. The department declined to comment on the lawsuit. James said the Sunrise Wind and Empire Wind projects had already cleared years of extensive security and safety reviews. She said pausing them now threatens the state’s economy and energy grid.

A federal judge on Friday blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from enforcing most of his executive order on elections against the vote-by-mail states Washington and Oregon, in the latest blow to Trump’s efforts to require documentary proof of citizenship to vote and to require that all ballots be received by Election Day. U.S. District Judge John H. Chun found that those requirements exceeded the president’s authority, following similar rulings in a Massachusetts case brought by 19 states and in a Washington, D.C., case by Democratic and civil rights groups.

Sean Payton acknowledges the Denver Broncos need to improve their offense despite recent wins. After losing to Jacksonville last month, the Broncos beat the Chiefs and Chargers, securing the top AFC playoff seed. Payton denies holding back plays to surprise opponents, allowing that the offense just wasn’t sharp. On Friday, the team returned to practice focusing on execution rather than specific opponents. Payton emphasized improving third-down and red-zone performance. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey agreed, noting the importance of turning field goals into touchdowns. The Broncos will learn their opponent over the wild-card weekend. They’ll face the lowest remaining seed.

The justices said Friday they will review an appellate ruling that would allow the lawsuit against Cisco to go forward in U.S. courts. Arguments will take place in the spring. The court acted after the Trump administration weighed in on Cisco’s behalf to urge the justices to hear the case. An Associated Press investigation last year showed that Cisco and other American tech companies to a large degree designed and built China’s surveillance state, despite warnings the tools were being used to persecute religious groups.

But Democrats are making the case that Trump is becoming distracted from the needs of Americans, especially after the attack on Venezuela.
