Will K-pop earn its first Grammy in 2026? Maybe, but it’s complicated

K-pop is an inextricable force in global pop culture. It has also long been undercelebrated at institutions like the Grammys. That could change at the 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony next month. K-pop artists have earned nominations in three of the big four categories for the first time. Experts say it may be a historic moment for K-pop, but this year’s nominees are better described as K-pop-adjacent. Up for awards are Katseye, HUNTR/X’s “Golden” from the “KPop Demon Hunters” soundtrack and Rosé and Bruno Mars’ “APT.” The artists perform mostly in English, and the songs feature universally accessible and beloved pop hooks.

Luigi Mangione heads to court as he fights to block death penalty, murder charge and key evidence

Luigi Mangione is due in federal court for a pivotal hearing in his fight to bar the government from seeking the death penalty against him in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Garnett has said she also plans to set a trial date during Friday’s proceeding. Mangione’s lawyers contend that authorities prejudiced his case by turning his December 2024 arrest into a “Marvel movie” spectacle and by publicly declaring their desire to see him executed even before he was formally indicted. The charge that has enabled the government to seek the death penalty is murder by firearm. His attorney’s say it’s legally flawed. Federal prosecutors say Mangione’s lawyers are wrong.

Mario Cristobal is taking his Miami Hurricanes to the national championship after the kind of performance that the former offensive lineman had to love. The No. 10 seed Hurricanes dominated the line of scrimmage for the majority of their 31-27 victory over No. 6 Ole Miss on Thursday night in the Fiesta Bowl, racking up an impressive 191 yards rushing as a veteran offensive line spent much of the night steamrolling the Rebels’ defense. Miami’s veteran, massive line has been one of the team’s strengths all season and created some big holes for Mark Fletcher Jr., who ran for 133 yards on 22 carries. The Hurricanes finished with 459 total yards.

The game between the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls at the United Center on Thursday was postponed after a nearly two-hour delay due to condensation on the court. The officials cited “court conditions” for the delay in starting the contest. There appeared to be moisture on the floor at the United Center, which is also home to the Chicago Blackhawks, who played Wednesday and will skate at the arena again Friday.  Workers tried to dry the surface using mops and towels. The game was officially postponed at 8:53 p.m., prompting boos from the crowd. A rescheduled date for the game was not immediately announced.

The Department of Homeland Security described the vehicle’s passenger as “a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring” who had been involved in a recent shooting in Portland. The statement said that when agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver tried to run them over and an agent shot. There was no immediate independent corroboration of those events. The FBI’s Portland office says it is investigating.

Trump has a China problem in Venezuela: What to do with Beijing’s debt and oil stakes

President Donald Trump’s plan to control Venezuela’s oil industry and counter China’s influence could clash with his goal of stabilizing trade with Beijing. Venezuela owes China at least $10 billion, a debt paid down by oil shipments. There’s a possibility that an interim Venezuelan government aligned with Washington might end up questioning the deals. That would be a big blow to two major Chinese companies with significant oil stakes in Venezuela. But experts say there’s good reason for Washington to work with Beijing given the delicate trade negotiations between the two superpowers. Beijing has expressed strong opposition to U.S. actions in Venezuela.

Environmental groups claim federal and state officials withheld evidence about funding for an immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades. The facility, known as “Alligator Alcatraz,” remains open in part because an appellate court relied on arguments that Florida hadn’t sought federal reimbursement, which would trigger federal environmental law requirements. Now emails obtained through public records requests show Florida had taken steps to get federal funding — including a grant application that was accepted weeks before the appellate ruling. The environmental groups argue this evidence should influence the court’s final decision.

The House has passed a bipartisan package of three spending bills that would fund parts of the federal government through September. The vote demonstrates lawmakers’ eagerness to avoid another government shutdown near the end of the month. Congress has so far passed only three of the 12 annual spending bills that fund federal agencies for the current fiscal year. Failure to pass the remainder before a Jan. 30th deadline risks another shutdown just weeks after the record-setting 43-day shutdown that occurred late last year. Congressional leaders from both parties endorsed the latest measure, which if passed in the Senate would belatedly get Congress halfway home in completing their work on this year’s spending bills.

This week’s fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman by an immigration agent had grim echoes in Minnesota. It took place in a state that’s seen daily conflicts with the Trump administration. And it happened only a few blocks from the site of the police killing of George Floyd in 2020. That slaying sparked the biggest civil unrest of Trump’s first term. The president often talks about how protests over Floyd’s death needed to be met with more force. That approach is what led to the administration announcing the launch of its biggest immigration operation ever in Minnesota this week.

Judge blocks Trump administration from purging DEI-related terms from Head Start grant applications

A federal judge has directed the Trump administration to stop purging words it associates with diversity, equity and inclusion from Head Start grant applications and barred it from laying off any more federal employees in the federal Office of Head Start. The decision follows an April lawsuit by organizations representing Head Start providers and parents. They are challenging the Department of Health and Human Services’ attempts to exclude children in the U.S. illegally and ban language associated with DEI efforts. A Health and Human Services spokesperson said he could not comment on the judge’s order.

Some gifted dogs can learn new toy names by eavesdropping on owners

A new study finds that some gifted dogs can learn the names of new toys by eavesdropping. It’s a skill that has only been observed in a few animals, like parrots and apes. Ten gifted dogs watched their owners hold a new toy and talk to another person about it. Then the pups were told to go to another room and retrieve that specific toy from a pile. Seven out of 10 succeeded. Only a select group of pooches is capable of this, and scientists aren’t yet sure what’s behind it. The new research was published Thursday in the journal Science.

Ole Miss and Miami to play for a spot in the FBS national championship game at Fiesta Bowl

Mississippi has kept winning despite its coach bolting for another program. Miami has rekindled the glory days of its 2001 national championship with a ferocious defense and steady quarterback. One will play for a national championship after Thursday night’s Fiesta Bowl. Ole Miss spent the last half of the regular season wondering if coach Lane Kiffin would stick around or leave for LSU. Once the coach did head out, the sixth-seeded Rebels kept winning. The 10th-seeded Hurricanes have done it with defense. Miami gave up its fewest points since the 2001 national championship team and has been even better in the playoffs.

What to know about the rules for officers firing at a moving vehicle

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a woman in a moving vehicle in Minneapolis this week, sparking renewed questions about use-of-force rules. Most police departments and federal guidance bar shooting at a moving vehicle unless the driver poses an imminent threat beyond the vehicle itself. Experts say firing at vehicles is especially dangerous because stray bullets or a driver losing control can put bystanders at risk. Justice Department policy says deadly force is justified only when no reasonable alternative exists, including stepping out of the way. Officers can’t use lethal force just to stop or arrest someone who isn’t an immediate threat.

Tough, motivated defenses headline high-stakes Peach Bowl between No. 1 Indiana and No. 5 Oregon

Indiana linebacker Isaiah Jones insists there’s no real secret to the Hoosiers defensive success. They prepare hard. They follow the coaches’ instructions. They stick to the fundamentals. And they trust everyone to do their jobs. It’s as old-school as it gets, which is hardly a surprise in coach Curt Cignetti’s program. But No. 1 Indiana has reached Friday night’s Peach Bowl against No. 5 Oregon one win away from reaching its first national championship game because the Hoosiers remain motivated to prove something to themselves — and the college football world.

The Miami Dolphins have fired coach Mike McDaniel following a 7-10 season in which Miami missed the playoffs for the second straight year. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual tax returns this year, roughly on par with last year.

A taste of nature can provide balance and calm during the workday

Getting into nature can be challenging during the workday. Many professions allow little time or access to the outdoors. But there are ways to enjoy the natural world even if you’re place of work is a windowless office cubicle. Scheduled meetings don’t have to be held indoors. An in-person appointment can happen on a park bench or while taking a walk. Mobile devices mean virtual get-togethers also aren’t limited to conventional workspaces. When the weather is cold, listening to recorded bird songs, putting leaves, flower petals or plants on your desk, or bundling up for a walk to a nearby garden are ways to get a breath of fresh air on the job.

Trump officials and Louisiana put an end to another decades-old school desegregation order

The Trump administration and Louisiana officials have lifted another decades-old school desegregation order, part of a campaign to end court orders they describe as outdated. A federal judge on Monday approved a joint motion from Louisiana and the U.S. Justice Department to dismiss a 1967 lawsuit in DeSoto Parish schools, a district of about 5,000 students in the state’s northwest. It’s the second such dismissal since the Justice Department began working to overturn desegregation cases it once championed. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill thanked President Donald Trump and his Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday for “helping us to finally end some of these cases.”

NASA says it has canceled the year’s first spacewalk and may bring its crew back early from the International Space Station due to a medical issue. The spacewalk was supposed to happen Thursday, but was postponed because of an unspecified medical concern with an astronaut, who was not identified. The space agency says the crew member is stable and is considering options including an early end to the mission. The latest crew has been on the space station since August after launching from Florida.

Senate considers limiting Trump’s war powers after Venezuela raid

A resolution before the Senate would limit President Donald Trump’s ability to conduct further attacks against Venezuela. Democrats have failed to pass several similar measures in the past few months. But Thursday’s expected vote on the latest war powers resolution comes after the U.S. military seized Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in a surprise nighttime raid over the weekend. Some Republican senators say they’re considering whether to vote in favor of the resolution to limit Trump from taking more action in Venezuela. Democratic lawmakers are also preparing a resolution on Greenland after recent comments from Trump about a potential American takeover of the world’s largest island.

Slightly more Americans file for jobless benefits in the last week of 2025, but layoffs remain low

U.S. filings for unemployment benefits rose in the last week of 2025 but remain historically low, despite signs that the labor market is weakening. The number of Americans filing for jobless claims for the week ending Jan. 3 rose by 8,000 to 208,000, up from 200,000 the previous week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Applications for unemployment aid are viewed as a proxy for layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the job market. The total number of Americans filing for jobless benefits for the previous week ending Dec. 27 jumped by 56,000 to 1.91 million, the government said.

White House will present Trump’s ballroom project for a review months after construction began

The White House is expected to share details of President Donald Trump’s planned ballroom at a monthly meeting of the National Capital Planning Commission. The meeting is Thursday. An information presentation is often the first step in the review process. Commissioners can ask questions and share observations before a more formal review. Votes and public testimony will be allowed later. Trump in October demolished the East Wing of the White House in preparation for building the ballroom. The Republican president has put the price tag at $400 million — double the original estimate. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has sued to halt construction.

Inside a chaotic digital record of the Brown University shooting: What students saw, feared, shared

As a shooting unfolded at Brown University on Dec. 13, students turned to the anonymous app Sidechat to document fear, confusion and grief in real time — often before receiving official alerts. An Associated Press analysis of about 8,000 posts shows how the campus feed became an emergency log as students sheltered in place, debated misinformation, sought reassurance and grappled with the physical and emotional toll of a lockdown that lasted into the night. The posts reveal how social media now shapes students’ experience of campus violence, while also highlighting tensions with the speed and flower of information from college officials.

What Americans think about crowdfunding campaigns, according to a new AP-NORC poll

A new AP-NORC poll finds that about 2 in 10 U.S. adults donated money to a crowdfunding campaign over the last year, with medical expenses proving most common. Crowdfunding refers to pooling donations online through organized platforms such as GoFundMe and GiveSendGo. It has emerged as a convenient way to seek help covering costs for emergency treatment, Little League sports equipment and anything between. But participation still lags behind more formal avenues for giving. And Americans have some doubts about whether people who crowdfund really need the money and use it responsibly.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom to deliver final State of the State address

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is set to deliver his final State of the State address to lawmakers in Sacramento on Thursday. His speech comes a day after California marked a year since the destructive Los Angeles-area fires broke out. It also comes after a year in which Newsom has sparred with President Donald Trump over everything from the Republican’s deployment of National Guard troops in L.A. to the federal government’s blocking of California’s first-in-the-nation vehicle-emission rules. This is the first year since 2022 that Newsom is delivering an in-person speech before state lawmakers for his State of the State.
