At CES, auto and tech companies transform cars into proactive companions

As CES opened Tuesday to the public, auto and tech companies like Nvidia and Gentex showed how AI technology can transform cars into proactive companions that adapt and react to drivers and passengers in real time. Nvidia announced Alpamayo at the annual tech trade show in Las Vegas. CEO Jensen Huang says it’s the company’s new vehicle AI initiative that will help autonomous cars think through complex driving decisions. Smart vehicles on display across the show floor envision a future where cars that track heart rates and emotions is the norm. Horror of school attack in Uvalde, Texas, brings tears as officer faces trial over police response

The first day of testimony in the trial of a former police officer accused of failing to protect students who died in the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school massacre turned emotional right away. Families whose loved ones died sobbed in court Tuesday while listening to frantic 911 calls as the horror unfolded on the recordings. A special prosecutor told jurors that the former Uvalde schools officer arrived while the teenage gunman was still outside the building but did nothing until it was too late. Adrian Gonzales is one of two former officers charged following the attack that killed 19 students and two teachers. The officer’s attorney says Gonzales did what he could at a confusing and chaotic scene.

Redick: LeBron James exhibiting ‘a different kind of greatness’ with the Lakers this season

Lakers coach JJ Redick compares LeBron James at 41 years old to Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux at the end of his career. Redick says James doesn’t always have his best stuff, but usually has enough to win. James scored 30 points in a 111-103 victory in New Orleans on Tuesday night. It was James’ second 30-point game in his last three. James missed the first 14 games of this season because of sciatica and says his playing status on the second of back-to-back games should always be considered “to be determined.” But he says he also appreciates every chance to play now more than when he was younger and knew his career still had many years left.

A year after LA-area wildfires destroyed thousands of homes, fewer than a dozen have been rebuilt

A year after devastating fires in the L.A. area, fewer than a dozen homes have been rebuilt. Many homeowners find their insurance insufficient to cover rebuilding costs in the wake of the Palisades and Eaton fires, which killed 31 people and destroyed around 13,000 residential properties. Relief organizations are helping, but progress is slow. Many residents have left their communities, and hundreds of properties have been sold. It could take years before many more homeowners manage to rebuild. For now, about 900 homes are under construction, possibly on pace to be completed later this year. It’s an encouraging sign for those still hopeful they can do the same.

The Islanders’ Ilya Sorokin was spectacular in his return from injury Tuesday night, shutting out New Jersey. The Devils got another rough showing out of Jacob Markstrom, who allowed goals on three of the first five shots he faced and nine of 24 overall. Just past the midway point of the season, the Islanders are a handful of points up in the standings on their local rivals.

Earlier, the same judge blocked the laws from taking effect. Wyoming sought to join 13 states that have banned abortion at all stages of pregnancy since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Meanwhile, polling conducted in the immediate aftermath of the military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro suggests many Americans are unconvinced the U.S. should step in to take control of the country.
