49ers’ offense goes silent against Seahawks, costing them NFC’s No. 1 seed

San Francisco’s offense had been nearly unstoppable heading into a showdown with Seattle with the No. 1 seed in the NFC at stake. But the 49ers could generate almost nothing against the Seahawks in a 13-3 loss on Saturday night. The defeat means San Francisco will have to open the playoffs on the road in the wild-card round. The Niners will earn the fifth seed and the chance to play the 8-9 winner of the NFC South in the playoffs if the Rams lose or tie against Arizona on Sunday. They would fall to the sixth seed with a trip to Philadelphia or Chicago if Los Angeles wins.

Marjorie Taylor Greene made waves. Her constituents don’t agree on whether it was worth it

Marjorie Taylor Greene is leaving Capitol Hill after five years as one of the most well-known members of Congress. In her northwest Georgia House district, there is little consensus on whether the roller-coaster of headlines was worth it. Greene’s hardcore supporters stand by her despite her break with President Donald Trump. They see her as a fighter who spoke for them. Others in Greene’s district say her high-profile battles, conspiracy theories and bareknuckle politics did nothing to help the people she represented. Greene steps down on Monday, resigning in the middle of her third term.

How cocaine and corruption led to the indictment of Maduro

A newly unsealed U.S. Justice Department indictment accuses captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of running a “corrupt, illegitimate government” fueled by a drug-trafficking operation that flooded the U.S. with thousands of tons of cocaine. The arrest of Maduro and his wife in a stunning military operation early Saturday in Venezuela sets the stage for a major test for U.S. prosecutors as they seek to secure a conviction in a Manhattan courtroom against the longtime leader of the oil-rich South American nation. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X that Maduro and his wife “will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts.”

Amid wildfire grief, an LA-area resident sowed sunflowers and hope where her home once stood

Missi Dowd-Figueroa has brought life back to her fire-ravaged plot in Altadena by planting sunflowers. She lost her 1898 farm-style house in the Eaton Fire last January, one of two deadly wildfires in Los Angeles. A year later, many are still grappling with grief, and few have been able to rebuild. Dowd-Figueroa, a registered nurse and mother of three, decided to stay and heal by turning her barren property into a flourishing garden. Construction on her new home began in late September, lifting her spirits and giving her hope for the future.

Appeals panel says California’s ban on open carry in more populated counties is unconstitutional

A federal appeals panel has ruled that a California law prohibiting open carry of firearms in heavily populated counties is unconstitutional. The ruling was issued Friday by two judges on a three-judge panel for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The judges said the state’s policy of limiting open carry to counties with a population of less than 200,000 is not consistent with the Second Amendment. The dissenting judge said California could limit open carry in more populated areas because it allows for concealed carry throughout the state. The ruling comes in a long-running debate over gun laws in the United States and in California. The state could seek a review of the decision.

The United States has conducted a swift military operation in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. American officials say Maduro and Flores will face narco-terrorism charges in U.S. courts. The operation, which took place early Saturday, has left Venezuela in turmoil, with its leadership uncertain and details of casualties still emerging. Much is still unknown about how the U.S. ouster of Maduro will ricochet across the country and the region.

Experts say the U.S. military’s capture of Maduro may violate international law. Congress hasn’t authorized military action in the region but also hasn’t passed measures blocking the Trump administration from acting.

Ouster of Maduro government sparks celebrations among Venezuelans in South Florida

Revelers chanted “liberty” and draped Venezuelan flags over their shoulders in South Florida on Saturday to celebrate the American military attack that toppled Nicolás Maduro’s government. It was a stunning outcome they had longed for but left them wondering what comes next in their homeland. People gathered for a rally in Doral, Florida, as word spread that Venezuela’s president was captured and flown out of the country. Doral is the Miami suburb where President Donald Trump has a golf resort and roughly half the population is of Venezuela descent. Outside a restaurant, one man held a piece of cardboard with “Libertad” scrawled with a marker. How the US captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro

President Donald Trump is laying out some of the details of the U.S. military strike against Venezuela that’s led to the capture of leader Nicolás Maduro. Trump says Maduro was being “highly guarded” in a presidential palace that was “like a fortress,” although Maduro wasn’t able to get to a safe room. Trump tells the “Fox and Friends Weekend” show that American forces were armed with “massive blowtorches” and they could have used those blowtorches to cut through steel walls if Maduro had locked himself in that room. Trump says U.S. forces had practiced maneuvers on a replica building as they prepared for the operation.

Mississippi State coach optimistic about QB Taylor after injury in Duke’s Mayo Bowl

Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby expressed optimism that Kamario Taylor escaped serious injury after the freshman quarterback was carted off the field in the final moments of Mississippi State’s 43-29 loss to Wake Forest on Friday night in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. With the Bulldogs trailing by 14 with under three minutes to play, Taylor was scrambling for extra yardage and his leg was hit awkwardly as he was tackled. It appeared gruesome at the time and he writhed in obvious pain as play stopped and teammates gathered around him. A few moments later a cart came on the field to take Taylor to the locker room. Lebby said: “Initial reports have been good, so we’ll continue to evaluate and get more information.”
