But both coaches have come under scrutiny this season, with fans voicing displeasure about their underachieving teams.

Fans mourn closure of cupcake vending machine company Sprinkles Cupcakes

A company known for its “cupcake ATMs” has shut down after decades in the U.S. Sprinkles Cupcakes’ former owner Candace Nelson announced the closure Dec. 30. Fans took to social media to lament the closure. The company’s cupcake-dispensing machines in malls and airports briefly went viral on TikTok. The company no longer has any products for sale on its website. Nelson sold the business to private equity firm KarpReilly LLC in 2012. Neither the firm nor Nelson provided a reason for the closure. Private equity has dramatically expanded its influence in restaurants over the last decade.

US Coast Guard searches for survivors of boat strikes as odds diminish days later

The Coast Guard said it’s still searching for people who had jumped off alleged drug-smuggling boats when the U.S. military attacked them days earlier. That diminishes the likelihood that anyone survived. The search began Tuesday about 400 miles southwest of the Mexico-Guatemala border. The military said it had attacked three boats and killed three people on one of them. People on the other two vessels jumped overboard before those boats were destroyed. Since September, the U.S. military has been attacking boats that are allegedly smuggling drugs in international waters. President Donald Trump has said the attacks are needed to stem the flow of drugs into the U.S.

Eagles to rest key starters in season finale vs. Commanders even with playoff seeding at stake

The Eagles are prioritizing rest over seeding in their final regular-season game. Coach Nick Sirianni is treating Sunday’s matchup against Washington like a preseason game. Jalen Hurts and many other starters will sit out. The Eagles have already won the NFC East and are focused on staying healthy for the playoffs. They could secure the No. 2 seed with a win and a loss by Chicago, but Sirianni is more concerned with his players staying healthy. Even with backup quarterback Tanner McKee starting, the Eagles are favored to win. The Commanders are 4-12 and will be starting 39-year-old Josh Johnson at quarterback.

The Indianapolis Colts got off to a great start. The Houston Texans are in the midst of an even better finish that has them heading to the playoffs and the Colts heading home after they conclude the regular season on Sunday. The Texans secured their third straight postseason berth with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 27 that eliminated the Colts from playoff contention. Houston has won eight straight games to become the fifth team since 1990 to make the playoffs after opening a season 0-3 and first to do it twice.

NFC South rivals Falcons and Saints are looking to place encouraging final touch on losing seasons

The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints have similar goals of trying to complete losing seasons on high notes that offer hope the momentum can carry into 2026. The bad news for the NFC rivals is even extending a winning streak into the final regular-season game would come far too late to make this a successful season. The Falcons are 7-9 and have a season-best three-game winning streak. Atlanta will try to complete their first season sweep of the Saints since 2016. The Saints are 6-10 and have won four straight with rookie quarterback Tyler Shough.

The Denver Broncos have set a franchise record with 64 sacks this season, but head coach Sean Payton isn’t focused on the numbers. He emphasizes the importance of caging the quarterback and executing proper rushes. The Broncos play the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday with the AFC’s top playoff seed on the line. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph notes that opposing teams are releasing the ball quickly to avoid sacks, which plays into Denver’s defensive strategy. The Broncos lead the league in fewest big plays allowed, and Joseph believes their disciplined approach is key to their success.

McDermott, Bills preparing for playoffs as they host Jets in possible last game at Highmark Stadium

Bills coach Sean McDermott finds his focus being pulled in different directions ahead of Buffalo’s season finale against the New York Jets. He must decide who to play or rest ahead of the playoffs while still giving a proper send-off to Highmark Stadium in what could very well be the last game there. The Bills will move to a new stadium across the street next season. Buffalo can be no higher than the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs, which makes a home playoff game unlikely. Because of the relatively low stakes of Sunday’s game, McDermott will lean toward caution with injured players.

Tesla loses title as world’s biggest electric vehicle maker as sales fall for second year in a row

Tesla lost its crown as the world’s bestselling electric vehicle maker on Friday as a customer revolt over Elon Musk’s right-wing politics and stiff overseas competition pushed sales down for a second year in a row. Tesla said that it delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, down 9% from a year ago. Chinese rival BYD, which sold 2.26 vehicles last year, is now the biggest EV maker. For the fourth quarter, sales totaled 418,227, falling short of the 440,000 that analysts polled by FactSet expected. The sales total may likely have been impacted by the expiration of a $7,500 tax credit that was phased out by the Trump administration at the end of September.
