These Ohio State Buckeyes won’t win the first back-to-back national championships in school history and the College Football Playoff still doesn’t have a winner from teams with the first-round byes. No. 10 Miami held on for a 24-14 victory in the Cotton Bowl quarterfinal. The No. 3 Buckeyes were bounced a year after they won four CFP games on the way to the title. Ohio State trailed 14-0 at halftime, but was within three at 17-14 on Jeremiah Smith’s 14-yard touchdown catch on fourth-and-2 early in the fourth quarter. He finished with 157 yards on seven catches, but a shiny second half wasn’t enough.

Lucas Pettersson and Eddie Genborg each scored twice and Sweden beat the United States 6-3 on Wednesday night in the world junior hockey championship to complete group play unbeaten. Casper Juustovaara opened the scoring in the first period on a deflection, and the Swedes led 5-1 in the second period in the Group A finale. Ivar Stenberg scored in the third, and Love Harenstam made 28 saves. Â In the quarterfinals Friday, Sweden will face Latvia, and the second-place Americans will play Finland, a 7-4 loser to Canada later Wednesday night in the Group B finale in Minneapolis. Canada will play Slovakia, and Czechia will meet Switzerland. Chase Reid, Will Zellers and Teddy Stiga scored for the United States.

Nathan MacKinnon scored twice, including his 400th career goal, and Valeri Nichushkin netted his second NHL hat trick as the Colorado Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 6-1 for their ninth straight win. MacKinnon became the third player in franchise history to reach 400 goals and first to score them all for the Avalanche since the team moved to Colorado from Quebec. MacKinnon, who added two assists, leads the NHL with 34 goals. Nichushkin scored twice during a four-goal barrage in the first 4:39 of the game and finished with three goals. Brock Nelson scored later on a power play for Colorado, and Mackenzie Blackwood turned away 12 shots.

Julian Champagnie had a career-high 36 points and the San Antonio Spurs survived an injury scare to Victor Wembanyama, rallying to beat the New York Knicks 134-132 on Wednesday night in a rematch of the NBA Cup final. Wembanyama finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds in 24 minutes before limping off the court with an apparent leg injury with under 11 minutes remaining. He returned to the bench in warmups in the final minutes. New York’s Jalen Brunson had 29 points, including a 3-pointer at the close of regulation after stripping Keldon Johnson of possession as he celebrated with San Antonio’s bench. Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson added 20 points apiece for the Knicks, who had a three-game winning streak halted.

San Antonio center Victor Wembanyama left Wednesday night’s rematch with the New York Knicks in the fourth quarter after suffering an apparent left leg injury, but returned to the bench in time to see the Spurs win 134-132. Wembanyama took to the court after the game to gleefully lead the newest Spurs tradition that he created — having the crowd clap their hands after each bang of the drum by the 7-foot-4 center, who finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds in 24 minutes. Wembanyama went to the locker room with just under 11 minutes remaining, but returned to the Spurs bench with 1:22 left in the game. He was alone and walking without a limp when he returned. It was a welcome sight for the Spurs after some tense minutes.

Right-handed reliever Hunter Harvey and the Chicago Cubs have finalized a one-year contract. The addition of Harvey is the latest move in a bullpen makeover for the Cubs, who have added Phil Maton, Hoby Milner and Jacob Webb and re-signed Caleb Thielbar. The 31-year-old Harvey was slowed by injuries last season with the Kansas City Royals. He pitched in 12 games and was 1-0 with 11 strikeouts in 10 2/3 shutout innings. The 22nd overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft by Baltimore, Harvey is 10-11 with a 3.11 ERA in 182 games with 201 career strikeouts in 185 innings.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 30 points in three quarters and the Oklahoma City Thunder rolled past the Portland Trail Blazers 124-95 for their third straight win. Ajay Mitchell scored 17 points off the bench, and Jalen Williams had 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Chet Holmgren added 12 points, 10 rebounds and a season-high six blocks for Oklahoma City, which converted 25 Portland turnovers into 28 points. Gilgeous-Alexander scored at least 20 points for the 105th consecutive game. Mitchell made all four of his field goal attempts and all eight free throws. Sidy Cissoko scored 19 points for Portland.

Tage Thompson scored twice within 2 1/2 minutes midway through the third period and had an assist as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Dallas Stars 4-1 on Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to 10 games. That matches both the franchise record and the longest for an NHL team this season, also done by Colorado in November. Josh Doan and defenseman Bowen Byram each had a goal and an assist for the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 28 saves in his third start during the streak, allowing one goal in each game. Mavrik Bourque scored for the Stars.

C.J. McCollum made a go-ahead, pull-up jumper with a second remaining to give the Washington Wizards a 114-113 victory over Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. McCollum’s winner capped an 18-point performance. Alex Starr and Bub Carrington each scored 20 points. Antetokunmpo scored 33 points to lead the Bucks (14-20), who shot 41.1% from the floor and made 16 of 39 from 3-point distance. Kevin Porter Jr. scored 19 points and Ryan Rollins finished with 16 for Milwaukee, which had won two in a row and was looking for its first three-game win streak of the season.

Luke Hughes scored the go-ahead goal 4:45 into the third period and the New Jersey Devils scored three times in a 1:56 span in a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night. Hughes also had an assist, giving him his 28th multi-point game and tying Rob Ramage for the most by a defenseman before age 23 in franchise history. Hughes snapped a shot from the slot to give the Devils the lead. Nico Hischier and Arseny Gritsyuk also scored for New Jersey, which trailed 2-0 going into the final 20 minutes. It is the first time the Devils have won this season when trailing after two periods. Jake Allen made 34 saves

Isaac Okoro scored a season-high 24 points, Tre Jones added 20 points and 12 assists and the depleted Chicago Bulls topped the New Orleans Pelicans 134-118. Matas Buzelis had 19 points, Jalen Smith had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Nikola Vucevic had 17 points for a Chicago team playing without its top two scorers in Josh Giddey and Coby White, who were injured in a loss to Minnesota on Monday. Zion Williamson led New Orleans with 31 points and Jordan Poole added 26 off the bench in the team’s fifth straight loss.

Montana’s Supreme Court has dismissed a misconduct case against the state’s Republican attorney general after he openly defied court orders in a dispute with justices. A court-appointed panel last year found that Attorney General Austin Knudsen repeatedly attacked the integrity of the justices in his defense of a 2021 law permitting the state’s Republican governor to directly fill judicial vacancies. Justices said Wednesday that Knudsen had violated rules of conduct for attorneys but said the panel violated his due process rights. Knudsen said in a statement Wednesday that the compliant was nothing more than a political stunt.

Chief Justice John Roberts says that the Constitution remains a sturdy pillar for the country, a message that comes after a tumultuous year in the nation’s judicial system with pivotal Supreme Court decisions on the horizon. Roberts released his annual letter to the judiciary on Wednesday and said the nation’s founding documents remain firm and unshaken, a reference to a century-old quote from President Calvin Coolidge. It comes after a year in which some raised fears of a possible constitutional crisis amid legal pushback to President Donald Trump’s agenda. The Republican administration has scored wins at the Supreme Court, though major rulings on birthright citizenship and tariffs are yet to come.

Aaron Rodgers isn’t talking like someone ready to retire. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, who recently turned 42, hasn’t ruled out returning in 2026. Rodgers says he believes he’ll have options if he wants to play a 22nd season. The four-time MVP has thrown for more than 3,000 yards with 23 touchdowns for Pittsburgh, which hosts Baltimore in the regular-season finale with the AFC North title on the line. Rodgers has been largely healthy this season, save for a broken left wrist that forced him to miss a game. Rodgers says he thinks his decision will be based entirely on his desire to play and not his ability to play.

The Trump administration has ordered another coal-fired power facility to remain open. This time it’s telling the owners of the Craig Station in northwestern Colorado to keep running an electricity-generating unit that was slated for retirement Wednesday. The plant’s owners will need to fix a broken valve to keep the unit working. The 45-year-old generator is one of three at Craig Station. The Trump administration also has ordered coal-fired power plants in Indiana, Michigan and Washington state to remain operational against their owners’ wishes. It’s part of President Donald Trump’s push to revive the U.S. coal industry when many utilities are shifting to cheaper, less-polluting energy sources.

Farmers are now learning how much aid they can expect to receive from a $12 billion package that President Donald Trump announced earlier this month. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the figures Wednesday for how much aid per acre farmers can plan on for each row crop. The details arrived after most farmers have already met with their bankers to arrange financing for next year’s crops and placed orders for the seed and fertilizer they will need. But officials have promised that the payments should arrive by the end of February. Farmers say the aid won’t solve all their problems as they continue to deal with soaring costs.

A Walt Disney World worker in Florida was injured while trying to stop a runaway prop boulder during the park’s Indiana Jones live show. The 400-pound boulder moved off its track on Tuesday and rolled toward the audience. Another worker stopped it before it reached spectators. Disney wouldn’t disclose the worker’s injuries, citing privacy reasons. One show was canceled Tuesday, and Wednesday’s shows were modified to exclude the boulder. Disney is reviewing the incident to ensure safety. The show is based on the Indiana Jones films and recreates a famous scene from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Two brothers who received illegal prison sentences that were years longer than the maximum penalty for their crimes have been granted clemency by Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves. Reeves announced he was granting Maurice Taylor clemency on Wednesday. Maurice Taylor’s brother, Marcus Taylor, received clemency earlier this month. In February 2015, both brothers accepted plea bargains and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to sell a Schedule III substance. Maurice Taylor was sentenced to 20 years in prison with five years suspended, and Marcus Taylor to 15 years. At the time of their sentencing, the maximum penalty for conspiracy to sell a Schedule III substance was five years.

The U.S. has imposed sanctions on four firms in Venezuela’s oil sector and designated four additional oil tankers as blocked property. The U.S. accuses the tankers of serving Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government. The action Wednesday is part of the Trump administration’s pressure campaign on Maduro. U.S. forces also have seized two oil tankers off Venezuela’s coast, are pursuing another and have conducted a series of deadly strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States “will not allow the illegitimate Maduro regime to profit from exporting oil while it floods the United States with deadly drugs.”

The U.S. military says it struck three more boats that were allegedly smuggling drugs. The attacks killed three people while others jumped overboard and may have survived. Â U.S. Southern Command did not reveal where the attacks occurred. Previous attacks have been in the Caribbean Sea and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The military said the attacks occurred on Tuesday. They bring the total number of known boat strikes to 33 and the number of people killed to at least 110 since early September. The Trump administration has alleged the boats were transporting drugs but has not publicly released evidence.

Betty Boop and “Blondie” are among the highlights of titles entering the public domain with the arrival of 2026. The first cartoons that feature Boop and the first “Blondie” comic strips debuted in 1930, and with the passage of 95 years, their U.S. copyrights expired as of Thursday. The first novels featuring teen detective Nancy Drew and the first book featuring Agatha Christie’s investigator Miss Marple also become public domain as do William Faulkner’s novel “As I Lay Dying” and Dashiell Hammett’s “The Maltese Falcon.” Films becoming public property include the Marx Brothers’ “Animal Crackers” and early best picture winner “Cimarron.”

The Trump administration has ended the lease agreement for three public golf courses in Washington. It’s a move that offers President Donald Trump an additional opportunity to put his stamp on another piece of the nation’s capital. The National Links Trust is the nonprofit that has operated Washington’s three public courses on federal land for the last five years. It says the Department of the Interior had terminated its 50-year lease agreement. The Interior Department said it was terminating the lease because the nonprofit had not implemented required capital improvements and failed to meet the terms of the lease.

Former special counsel Jack Smith told lawmakers that the Jan. 6. riot at the U.S. Capitol “does not happen” without President Donald Trump. That’s according to a transcript released Wednesday of Smith’s closed-door interview with the House Judiciary Committee. Smith also described the Republican president as the “most culpable and most responsible person” in the criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Dec. 17 deposition was held privately despite Smith’s request to testify publicly. The release of the transcript and video of the interview adds to the public understanding of the decision-making behind two of the most consequential Justice Department investigations in recent history.

Two of the NFL’s three Christmas Day games have set viewership records. The Detroit Lions-Minnesota Vikings game on Netflix became the most-streamed NFL game in U.S. history. The Denver Broncos-Kansas City Chiefs game set a record for Amazon Prime Video. Nielsen reports the Vikings’ 23-10 victory over the Lions averaged 27.5 million U.S. viewers. The Broncos’ 20-13 win over the Chiefs had a 21.06 million average on Prime Video. The Cowboys-Commanders game averaged 19.9 million. Netflix’s “NFL Christmas Gameday” drew over 632 million social impressions globally, with Snoop Dogg’s halftime show being a major highlight.

President Donald Trump says he’s dropping — for now — his push to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon. The move comes after legal roadblocks hung up the effort. Trump said in a social media post Wednesday that he’s removing the Guard troops for now. “We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again — Only a question of time!” he wrote. Troops had already left Los Angeles after the president deployed them earlier this year as part of a broader crackdown on crime and immigration. They had been sent to Chicago and Portland but were never on the streets as legal challenges played out.

The College Football Playoff quarterfinals get underway with defending national champion Ohio State playing Miami in the Cotton Bowl. That game is Wednesday night before the other quarterfinal games Thursday in the Orange, Rose and Sugar bowls. This is the third consecutive Cotton Bowl for Ohio State, which beat Texas last year when it was a semifinal. The Big Ten runner-up had a first-round bye in this year’s playoff. This is the first CFP for No. 10 Miami, which won its playoff debut with a win at Texas A&M on Dec. 20. Next for the Cotton Bowl winner is a CFP semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 8 against Georgia or Ole Miss.

A federal appeals court says the Trump administration can continue to withhold Medicaid funding from Planned Parenthood while legal challenges continue. President Donald Trump and the Republican-led Congress cut Medicaid reimbursement for Planned Parenthood and some other abortion providers in July, sparking multiple lawsuits. In two cases, a federal judge issued preliminary orders siding with Planned Parenthood and a coalition of mostly Democratic states, but an appeals court overturned the first order on Dec. 12 and put the second on hold on Tuesday. And in a third case, a network of Maine clinics that challenged the cuts recently ended its lawsuit.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel says he hasn’t heard anything from the NFL that would prevent Stefon Diggs from playing in the team’s regular-season finale as the receiver faces strangulation and other criminal charges in connection with a dispute with his former private chef. Diggs didn’t speak with reporters on Wednesday as he has typically done throughout the season. But he was in the locker room prior to practice and on the practice field with the team. The Patriots voiced their support for Diggs in a statement after the allegations became public. Vrabel echoed that support and says they’ll let the legal proceedings play out.

Incoming New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will make history as the city’s first mayor to take the oath of office on a Quran. He will also be the first Muslim, South Asian, and African-born mayor. One of the centuries-old copies of the Quran he’ll use was chosen because it reflects the vibrant Muslim community in New York. It includes a pocket-sized Quran from the Ottoman Syria, part of a collection documenting Black contributions to history. The inauguration has sparked anti-Muslim rhetoric, but scholars hope it will encourage interest in the city’s Islamic history. The Quran will be displayed at the New York Public Library after the ceremony.

The NBA announces its best Christmas Day viewership numbers in 15 years. More than 47 million people in the U.S. watched at least part of the five-game slate, marking a 45% increase over last year. The league revealed this on Wednesday. The Cleveland-New York game became the most-watched Christmas game ever starting at noon Eastern, with an average of 6.4 million viewers. The San Antonio-Oklahoma City game was the most-watched in the 2:30 p.m. slot since 2017. Additionally, the NBA was the “most-viewed brand across social media” on Christmas, with content generating 1.6 billion views.

College football is in chaos with coaches and players on the move during the most crucial time of the year. Oregon coach Dan Lanning suggests changes to streamline this period. On Wednesday, he proposed playing playoff games every weekend until the season ends. This would allow coaches and players to transition smoothly. Oregon is losing both coordinators, and other teams face similar challenges. The college football bowl schedule has always been this way, but Lanning believes it’s time for change. Many agree that the current system isn’t working, and adjustments are needed.

Iowa scored late in first half of the ReliaQuest Bowl as the result of a quirky play involving an illegal kick by the Vanderbilt punter. On fourth down at the Vandy 15, punter Nick Haberer took the snap and began moving toward the line of scrimmage. He stepped over the 15 before sending a punt 53 yards out of bounds at the Iowa 32. Haberer was flagged for an illegal kick, and the 5-yard penalty from the spot of the foul gave the Hawkeyes possession at the Vandy 10. Reece Vander Zee caught a touchdown pass from Mark Gronowski on the next play.

The Department of Justice has expanded its review of documents related to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to 5.2 million as it also expands the number of attorneys trying to comply with a law mandating their release. That’s according to a person briefed on a letter sent to U.S. Attorneys who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it. The figure is the latest estimate in the expanding review of case files on Epstein and his longtime girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell that has run more than a week past a deadline set in law by Congress. The Justice Department has more than 400 attorneys working on the review, but does not expect to release more documents until Jan. 20 or 21.

Cody Campbell is a billionaire supporter of Texas Tech, his alma mater. He also has a distinct vision of where college sports needs to go if it is going to survive. In an interview with The Associated Press in advance of Tech’s College Football Playoff game against Oregon, he argued that Congress needs to create a new entity that can oversee all of college sports. He says college sports has professionalized the cost side of its business but is still generating revenue like amateurs.

The advice that legendary investor Warren Buffett offered on investing and life over the years helped earn him legions of followers who eagerly read his annual letters and filled an arena in Omaha every year to listen to him at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meetings. Buffett’s last day as CEO is Wednesday after six decades of building up the Berkshire conglomerate. He’ll remain chairman, but Greg Abel will take over leadership. Buffett summed up his investing approach by saying “Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful.” He also warned employees to make sure they’d be comfortable with anything they do being reported the next day on the front page of their local newspaper.

President Donald Trump has issued the first vetoes of his second term, rejecting two bipartisan natural resources bills. The Tuesday vetoes had the effect of punishing backers of the bills who had opposed the president’s positions on other issues. Trump vetoed drinking water pipeline legislation from Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, a longtime ally who broke with the president over releasing files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He also rejected legislation that would have given the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida more control over some of its land. The tribe was among groups suing the administration over an immigration detention center in the Everglades known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”

English actors Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton have welcomed their second child. Hiddleston confirmed the news to GQ in a feature published Monday. He described birth as the “most beautiful, profound, earth-shattering, life-altering” experience. A birth date was not revealed. Hiddleston and Ashton first met while starring in the 2019 revival of the Broadway play, “Betrayal.” They confirmed their engagement in 2022 and welcomed their first child later that year. Both Hiddleston and Ashton were born in London. Hiddleston is best known for his portrayal of Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ashton is also a member of the MCU, having portrayed Dar-Benn in the 2023 film “The Marvels.”

Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week as layoffs remain low despite a weakening labor market. U.S. applications for jobless claims for the week ending Dec. 27 fell by 16,000 to 199,000 from the previous week’s 215,000, the Labor Department reported Wednesday. Analysts surveyed by the data firm FactSet forecast 208,000 new applications. Applications for unemployment aid are viewed as a proxy for layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the job market. The total number of Americans filing for jobless benefits for the previous week ending Dec. 20 fell by 47,000 to 1.87 million, the government said.

The longest-serving White House chief usher says presidents before Donald Trump were interested in having a larger space for entertaining too. It’s a sentiment that Trump cites as justification for building a new ballroom, a project he now estimates will cost $400 million. Gary Walters retired as chief usher in 2007 after 21 years in the job. He recently wrote a memoir about his time at the White House. Walters says massive tents on the south grounds were used for events that were too big for indoors, but they came at a cost. Trump has complained about using tents.

The U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission wants to turn America’s 250th birthday celebration into the country’s single biggest year for volunteering. Known as America Gives, the program will have to revitalize a culture of service that has been waning. A December AP-NORC poll finds that just 28% of Americans say they volunteered time to a religious or secular charitable organization this year. The idea behind America Gives is to leverage nationwide reflections on the country’s direction to encourage lasting community involvement. America250 Chair Rosie Rios, who oversees the nonpartisan commission created by Congress to organize the anniversary, says “this is as much about the future as it is the past.”
