Anonymous money fuels $5 million in attacks on Georgia’s Lt. Gov. Burt Jones

A mysterious group called Georgians for Integrity has spent around $5 million on television ads, mailers and texts attacking Lt. Gov. Burt Jones since November. Jones is one of three top Republicans in the 2026 governor’s race to succeed outgoing Gov. Brian Kemp. The attacks claim Jones is using his office to enrich himself. Jones calls the ads “fabricated trash” and his campaign has threatened to sue television stations if they keep airing it. No one has proved who is providing the money. Jones’ top Republican rivals deny involvement. The state Republican Party alleges the spending violates Georgia campaign finance law and has asked authorities to investigate.

Kyle Whittingham hired as Michigan football coach, replacing the fired and disgraced Sherrone Moore

Michigan has hired Kyle Whittingham as its football coach, giving the former Utah coach a five-year contract to replace the fired and disgraced Sherrone Moore. The 66-year-old Whittingham announced two weeks ago that he would step down after 21 seasons as Utah’s coach. Morgan Scalley was promoted from defensive coordinator to replace Whittingham, who has won a school-record 177 games. Scalley will now take over the Utes immediately and coach them in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 31. Michigan fired Moore after the school said it discovered his inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Moore was subsequently charged with three crimes for confronting a woman he’d been having an affair with.

Lawyer in Diego Pavia’s eligibility lawsuit against NCAA cites NBA draft pick’s return to college

A lawyer for Heisman Trophy runner-up Diego Pavia and 26 other football players has cited the NCAA’s decision to allow an NBA draft pick to return to college basketball as a reason that a federal judge should let his clients play in 2026 and 2027. On Wednesday, Baylor announced that 7-foot center James Nnaji had joined the Bears after four seasons playing professionally in Europe and being drafted by the NBA in 2023. Pavia plans to enter the NFL draft but is continuing the lawsuit challenging an NCAA rule that counts seasons spent at junior colleges against eligibility for Division I football. Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers could win the AFC North before they play the Browns

Aaron Rodgers doesn’t plan on changing his sleep schedule Saturday night, even though his Pittsburgh Steelers could wrap up a division title without playing. If the Green Bay Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens, the Steelers would secure their first AFC North title since 2020, making Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns essentially meaningless. Rodgers says he won’t change his approach even if the Steelers have the division wrapped up. One thing the Browns have to play for is Myles Garrett’s pursuit of the NFL single-season sack record. He needs one sack to beat the mark of 22 1/2 held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt.

Powerful winter storms brought the wettest Christmas season to Southern California this week. Relentless winds and rain also triggered widespread debris flows and left homes halfway filled with mud. Rains were expected to ease Friday afternoon but there’s still a risk of flash flooding near Los Angeles. Officials say firefighters rescued over 100 people Thursday night in Los Angeles county. Homes and cars in a mountain town were covered in rocks, debris and thick mud, and roads were washed out. The storms were the result of atmospheric rivers and were blamed for several deaths this week.

Attorneys for the man accused of killing iconic rapper Tupac Shakur are pushing to suppress evidence that was collected in what they say was an unlawful nighttime search. The attorneys claim the affidavit seeking to search Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ home in 2023 mischaracterized Davis as a dangerous armed drug dealer in order to get the rare nighttime search approved, when in reality he was a retired cancer survivor living with his wife outside of Las Vegas. Davis was arrested for the 1996 murder of Shakur in 2023, a major development in one of the country’s most well-known unsolved murder cases. He has pleaded not guilty.

The Texans can clinch a playoff berth with a win or tie on Saturday, while the Chargers need a victory to set up a winner-takes-all showdown with the Denver Broncos in Week 18. Neither Houston nor Los Angeles has reached this point of the season by being the most aesthetically pleasing on offense and everything points towards a cagey low-scoring affair given the state of both teams’ offensive lines against excellent pass rushes.

The Bobcats allowed only 295.2 yards per game this season, ranking eighth in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Chiefs’ valiant effort falls short against the Broncos in a Christmas night thriller

Chris Oladokun sees potential for the Kansas City Chiefs despite their loss to the Denver Broncos. On Thursday night, Oladokun started because of injuries to Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew. The Chiefs were missing key players including offensive tackles and wide receivers. Despite these challenges, they pushed the Broncos, who are aiming for the AFC West title, to the limit. Denver won 20-13 after a late touchdown. Oladokun remains optimistic about Kansas City’s future. The Chiefs have struggled with injuries and mistakes this season, but there’s hope for improvement. They face the Raiders next weekend.

Jaguars derive extra motivation from Pro Bowl voting ahead of AFC playoffs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have new motivation for their postseason run: Pro Bowl snubs. The 11-4 Jaguars landed just one player on the AFC roster announced this week. And it wasn’t even a positional player. Long snapper Ross Matiscik was the team’s only selection. Running back Travis Etienne, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, linebacker Devin Lloyd and kick returner Parker Washington were voted alternates and still could land spots in the Pro Bowl Games. But coach Liam Coen says the oversight “just speaks volumes” about the perception of the Jaguars.

Minnesota looks to stretch bowl winning streak to 9 when it faces New Mexico in Rate Bowl

In an era of bowl opt outs, Minnesota still finds plenty of reasons to embrace the postseason experience, even when the chase for a national championship ended long ago. The Gophers are pretty good at it, too, heading into Friday’s Rate Bowl against New Mexico on an eight-game bowl winning streak. That’s the Football Bowl Subdivision’s longest active streak, the longest ever by a Big Ten Conference team and the fourth-longest in college football history. New Mexico will arrive in the desert trying to cap a resurgent season. Coach Jason Eck has led the Lobos to their first bowl game since 2016 in his first year after closing the season on a six-game winning streak.
