Brown University shooting leaves students, community frustrated with official response

The effort to find a man who walked onto Brown University’s campus and shot nearly a dozen students in a crowded lecture hall has raised serious questions about the school’s security systems and the urgency of the investigation itself. On Sunday, officials released a person of interest without charges, leaving investigators scrambling for new leads. The shooting killed two students and injured nine others. The FBI and Providence police have released footage but have not identified the suspect. Students and community members are frustrated by security gaps. Employers likely added 40,000 jobs in November as government releases report delayed by shutdown

The U.S. job market is sluggish and confusing this fall. Federal Reserve policymakers are divided over whether the labor market needs more help from lower interest rates. Their deliberations are rendered more difficult because official reports on the economy’s health are coming in late and incomplete after a 43-day government shutdown. The Labor Department is expected to provide at least a little clarity when it releases November numbers on hiring and unemployment Tuesday, 11 days late. Forecasters surveyed by the data firm FactSet expect that employers added an unimpressive 40,000 jobs last month and that unemployment stayed at 4.4%, unchanged from the last rate published – for September.

Heather Barron from Loggerhead says they suffer from a condition called cold stunning, which requires antibiotics and fluids. The turtles migrate north in summer and often get stuck in Cape Cod. The New England Aquarium has treated 472 hypothermic turtles since Nov. 7.

Most toys and electronics sold in the U.S. come from China. So do most holiday decorations. Jewelry prices have risen due to the cost of gold.

The star quarterback was hurt while he tried to keep the Kansas City Chiefs’ postseason hopes alive in the waning seconds of a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. The team says Mahomes is considering surgical options. It’s the most significant injury of a superlative nine-year career for Mahomes. The two-time MVP has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles and reached the AFC championship game in each of his seven previous seasons as Kansas City’s starter. This year, the Chiefs won’t even make the playoffs, and Mahomes won’t be back on the field until sometime in 2026.

Blackhawks place Connor Bedard on injured reserve with an upper-body injury

The Chicago Blackhawks have placed Connor Bedard on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Bedard got hurt in the final seconds of Friday night’s 3-2 loss at St. Louis. The 20-year-old center attempted to win a draw to give his team one last chance, but he was knocked down by Blues center Brayden Schenn. He grasped at his right shoulder and immediately headed to the locker room, accompanied by a trainer. Chicago also recalled defenseman Ethan Del Mastro and goaltender Laurent Brossoit from Rockford of the American Hockey League. Brossoit had been in the minors on a conditioning assignment.

Prescott says Cowboys have to stick to business with playoff hopes all but gone

Dak Prescott stared blankly for several seconds when the star quarterback was asked what the goal would be for the Dallas Cowboys over the final three games with their playoff hopes all but gone. The long pause said it all after a Minnesota team that was eliminated from postseason contention before kickoff put Prescott’s crew in basically the same place with a 34-26 victory. Dallas might be eliminated before playing its next game Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. NFC East rival Philadelphia likely will finish off the Cowboys by beating four-win Washington on Saturday.

Professors, students appeal ruling on Alabama law banning DEI initiatives at public universities

A group of students and professors in Alabama is appealing a state law that bans diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in public schools. The law, effective October 2024, prohibits using state funds for DEI programs or endorsing “divisive concepts” related to race and gender. U.S. District Judge David Proctor has allowed the law to remain, stating it permits objective discussions without endorsement. Critics argue it limits academic freedom and alters curriculums. Professor Dana Patton says the law’s vagueness forces her to change long-standing courses to avoid repercussions. The appeal follows a similar federal mandate from the Department of Justice.

Supreme Court will hear appeal of Black death row inmate over racial bias in Mississippi jury makeup

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the appeal of a Black death row inmate from Mississippi whose case was handled by a prosecutor with a history of dismissing Black jurors for discriminatory reasons. A federal judge had previously overturned the murder conviction of the inmate, Terry Pitchford, but an appeals court reversed that ruling. The justices stepped into the case Monday involving the same prosecutor, former District Attorney Doug Evans, who was at the center of a high court case that resulted in a 2019 decision that overturned the death sentence and conviction of Curtis Flowers. The court ruled nearly 40 years ago that jurors can’t be excused from service because of their race.

Court battle begins over California’s new congressional map designed to favor Democrats

The Justice Department and California are going to court over the state’s new congressional map that favor Democrats. The court battle begins Monday. A three-judge panel will consider whether to allow the state to the new boundaries for elections. California voters decisively approved the map last month. The Justice Department has accused California of racial gerrymandering by favoring Hispanic voters. Democrats said they’re confident the lawsuit will fail. The legal fight could help determine which party wins control of the U.S. House in 2026. California’s map is a direct counter to a similar Republican-led effort in Texas backed by President Donald Trump.

Family member questioned after Rob Reiner and his wife found dead in Los Angeles, AP source says

A law enforcement official says investigators have been questioning a family member of director-actor Rob Reiner Rob Reiner and his wife Michele after they were found dead at their home in Los Angeles. Speaking anonymously to The Associated Press because they could not publicly discuss details of the investigation, the official also said investigators believe Reiners suffered stab wounds. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton, the chief of detectives, says police had not identified a suspect. He says they’ll try to speak to every family member they can to determine the facts. Reiner starred in “All in the Family” and directed hits including “When Harry Met Sally.” He and Michelle Reiner had three children together.

Interstellar comet keeps its distance as it makes its closest approach to Earth

A stray comet from another star is swinging past Earth. Discovered over the summer, the comet known as 3I/Atlas will pass within 167 million miles of our planet on Friday. That’s as close as it will get on its grand tour of the solar system. NASA continues to aim its space telescopes at the visiting ice ball. But it’s fading as it races back toward interstellar space, never to return. It’s the third known interstellar object to pass our way. Scientists believe it may have come from a star system much older than our own, making it a tantalizing target.

Baltimore cyclist finds joy in collecting lost hubcaps and stringing them into art

Cyclist Barnaby Wickham has collected more than 700 lost hubcaps, mostly on his bike rides around Baltimore. They have inspired a quest to turn litter into big, eye-catching art, including Christmas wreaths, a giant fish and a head of the Peanuts character Snoopy. It is a hobby that developed nearly two years ago from his love of cycling, an interest in the hubcaps he often finds during his rides and the desire to make something out of the junk he has collected. He sometimes includes the occasional grill of a car that turns up, but his assemblages are almost entirely comprised of hubcaps.

What will Virginia’s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin do next? He’s not ready to tell

Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia is leaving office next month. Youngkin says he’s still focusing on his work as governor and isn’t getting distracted by his political future. Youngkin won a competitive race for governor in 2021 by keeping hard-right Republicans energized while courting swing voters. Pundits added Youngkin’s name to a list of presidential prospects for a post-Donald Trump Republican Party. That party hasn’t happened. Now, Republicans and Democrats are debating whether Youngkin can still be the GOP’s next presidential nominee following statewide losses last month.
