Dak Prescott and Cowboys watch playoff hopes all but vanish in 34-26 loss to Vikings

J.J. McCarthy threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score, C.J. Ham had the go-ahead TD on his first carry of the season and the Minnesota Vikings severely damaged Dallas’ playoff hopes with a 34-26 victory over the Cowboys. The Vikings won a second consecutive game after they were eliminated from the postseason race before the kickoff. The Cowboys have to win their three remaining games and hope defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia goes 0-3 in order for Dallas to overtake the Eagles in the NFC East. Both of McCarthy’s TD tosses were to Jalen Nailor.

The Islamic State group and other militant organizations are experimenting with artificial intelligence as a tool to boost recruitment and refine their operations. National security experts say that just as businesses, governments and individuals have embraced AI, extremist groups also will look to harness the power of AI. That means aiming to improve their cyberattacks, breaking into sensitive networks and creating deepfakes that spread confusion and fear. Leaders in Washington have responded with calls to investigate how militant groups are using AI and seek ways to encourage tech companies to share more about how their products are being potentially misused.

LeBron James hits 2 late free throws, Lakers beat Suns 116-114 after blowing 20-point lead

LeBron James made two free throws with 3.9 seconds left, Luka Doncic added 29 points and the Los Angeles Lakers recovered from blowing a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter to top the Phoenix Suns 116-114 on Sunday night. Phoenix trailed 99-79 with 7:48 left, but took a 114-113 lead with 12.2 seconds left on Dillon Brooks’ 3-pointer over James. James was fouled on a 3-point attempt by Devin Booker with 3.9 seconds left. The 40-year-old — who finished with 26 points — missed the first free throw but made the final two to give the Lakers a 115-114 lead.

Paul Wiggin, College Football Hall of Famer and former coach, dies at 91

Paul Wiggin, the former Stanford and Cleveland Browns star who was on the losing end of “The Play” coaching star quarterback John Elway and the Cardinal, died Friday. He was 91. Wiggin’s death was announced by the Browns, the Minnesota Vikings and the National Football Foundation. He was the fourth-oldest living NFF Hall of Famer. Wiggin was on the Stanford sideline in 1982 for “The Play” when California scored the winning touchdown in a 25-20 victory in the “Big Game” after Stanford’s band prematurely took the field. Wiggin played for Stanford from 1954-56. He was a two-time All-America selection as a defensive tackle and was selected the school’s Defensive Player of the Century. Packers star pass rusher Micah Parsons feared to have torn ACL, AP source says

Micah Parsons is believed to have suffered a torn ACL in his left knee. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the All-Pro pass rusher’s injury who spoke to The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the severity of the injury hasn’t been confirmed by test. Parsons tells the AP in a text that he’s “sickened.” Parsons’ injury is a devastating blow to the Green Bay Packers, who lost 34-26 to Denver on Sunday. The Packers fell to second place behind the Chicago Bears in the NFC North.

Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin returns to lineup after missing 29 games

The Carolina Hurricanes have been able to reach first place in the Metropolitan Division without star defenseman Jaccob Slavin for most of the season. They got Slavin back in the lineup for Sunday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Philadelphia Flyers after a 29-game absence with what the team called a “lower-body injury.” He started the game and played 14:31. The 11th-year defenseman played in the first two games of the season but hadn’t played since Oct. 11. Slavin has been a cornerstone of the Hurricanes’ defense during the current streak of seven straight playoff appearances under coach Rod Brind’Amour. He was a standout performer for Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off last year and is expected to have a key role for the Americans in the Winter Olympics in February.

Amon-Ra St. Brown scorched his hometown team for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 13 receptions for the Lions. Detroit has alternated wins and losses since Week 5.

Jason Myers kicked a franchise-record six field goals, including a 56-yarder with 29 seconds left, and the Seattle Seahawks outlasted 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers and the Indianapolis Colts 18-16. Rivers threw a touchdown pass after coming out of retirement to make his first start in nearly five years, and he led the Colts into position for Blake Grupe’s go-ahead, 60-yard field goal with 47 seconds left. That was enough time for Sam Darnold and the Seahawks (11-3). Rashid Shaheed returned Grupe’s kickoff 28 yards to the Seattle 37, and Darnold connected with Shaheed twice for 25 yards to set up Myers.

Philip Rivers starts for Colts, ending nearly 5-year retirement at age 44

Philip Rivers is playing quarterback in the NFL again. The 44-year-old started for the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday at Seattle, ending a nearly five-year retirement. Indianapolis signed the Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist to its practice squad on Tuesday, and he was added to the Colts’ active roster on Saturday. Rivers completed 1 of 4 passes on the Colts’ opening drive, with the lone completion a 12-yard screen pass to Michael Pittman Jr. Rivers practiced all week, but he hadn’t taken a snap since the Colts’ 27-24 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs on Jan. 9, 2021.

The Buffalo Bills have kept themselves in the race for the AFC East title. Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes, and James Cook ran for two TDs and caught another as Buffalo rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat the New England Patriots 35-31 on Sunday. The Bills prevented the Patriots from clinching the division. Buffalo avoided being swept by a division opponent for the first time since 2019. The Bills also overcame a double-digit deficit for the third time this year. The Patriots lost their first division game of the season and their 10-game win streak ended.

C.J. Stroud leads Texans to 6th straight win, 40-20 over Cardinals

C.J. Stroud threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns and the Houston Texans jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a 40-20 victory over the slumping Arizona Cardinals. The Texans (9-5) have won six straight games for the first time since a nine-game winning streak in 2018 to improve their playoff hopes. It’s the sixth straight loss for the Cardinals (3-11), whose last win came on Nov. 3 against the Cowboys. Houston got going immediately with its fastest score of the season when Stroud connected with Nico Collins on a 57-yard touchdown on the second play of the game. Collins took the short throw, escaped two diving defenders at around the 40 and ran untouched into the end zone for the score.

Hassett says Federal Reserve can reject Trump’s views if he is chair

JetBlue flight near Venezuela avoids ‘midair collision’ with US Air Force tanker

A JetBlue flight from the small Caribbean nation of Curaçao halted its ascent to avoid colliding with a U.S. Air Force refueling tanker, and the pilot blamed the military plane for crossing his path. The incident Friday involved JetBlue Flight 1112 from Curaçao, which is just off the coast of Venezuela, en route to New York City’s JFK airport. It comes as the U.S. military has stepped up its drug interdiction activities in the Caribbean and is also seeking to increase pressure on Venezuela’s government.

Veteran pitcher Merrill Kelly returns to Diamondbacks on a $40 million, 2-year deal, AP source says

Veteran starting pitcher Merrill Kelly has agreed to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a $40 million, two-year deal, according to a person familiar with the move. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced and is pending a physical. The right-hander spent the first 6 1/2 years of his career with the Diamondbacks before the pending free agent was dealt to the Texas Rangers at this year’s trade deadline in July. He was good for both teams, finishing with a combined 12-9 record and 3.52 ERA. Kelly’s return to Arizona isn’t a huge surprise considering he’s a Scottsdale native and played in college at Arizona State.

‘Zootopia 2’ retakes No. 1 at box office, crosses $1 billion worldwide

“Zootopia 2” has regained the No. 1 spot at the box office with $26.3 million in its third weekend of release. According to studio estimates Sunday, The Walt Disney Co. animated sequel became the year’s second film to cross $1 billion worldwide. With “Avatar: Fire and Ash” arriving Friday, it was a relatively quiet weekend in theaters. There were no major new releases, leaving holdovers “Zootopia 2” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” to duke it out for the top spot. The edge went to “Zootopia 2,” which has quickly amassed $1.14 billion in ticket sales thanks to its enormous success in China. “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” collected $15.4 million, a drop of 70% from its above-expectations debut.

Haruki Murakami honored with awards and a jazzy tribute in New York
