What to know about Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s release from immigration custody

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose mistaken deportation helped galvanize opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, has been released from immigration detention, and a judge has temporarily blocked any further efforts to detain him. A big reason for that is because it appears no immigration judge has ever issued a removal order for him. That might have been an oversight, but without the order he can’t be deported. That’s according to the Maryland judge hearing the case. In order to get a removal order, the government will need to reopen Abrego Garcia’s closed immigration case, experts say. That comes with risks for both sides.

Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones has launched his campaign for Alabama governor. Jones is the last Democrat to hold statewide office in the state. He told supporters Friday at a rally in Birmingham that Alabama has pressing needs that are not being addressed. The campaign kickoff came on the anniversary of his 2017 Senate win. He could see a rematch in the general election against Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who defeated Jones previously and is also running for governor. Both will have party primaries before that.

Justice Department faces hurdle in seeking case against Comey as judge finds constitutional problems

A federal judge says the Justice Department violated the constitutional rights of a close friend of James Comey and must return to him computer files that prosecutors had hoped to use for a potential criminal case against the former FBI director. The ruling from U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly represents not only a stern rebuke of the conduct of Justice Department prosecutors but also imposes a dramatic hurdle to government efforts to seek a new indictment against Comey after an initial one was dismissed last month. The order concerns computer files and communications that investigators obtained years earlier from Daniel Richman, a Columbia University law professor.

The U.S. has removed Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes from its sanctions list. The Trump administration sanctioned him in July over his role in leading the trial against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro had been accused of masterminding a plot to stay in power despite his 2022 election defeat to current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. They were similar accusations to what President Donald Trump faced after a mob of his supporters attacked the Capitol after his own loss in the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden. Brazil’s government celebrated the sanctions lifting, which came after a weekend phone conversation between Trump and Lula.

The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee is threatening contempt of Congress proceedings against Bill and Hillary Clinton. That’s if they refuse to appear for depositions as part of the committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. Rep. James Comer said in a statement late Friday that the Clintons had “delayed, obstructed, and largely ignored the Committee staff’s efforts to schedule their testimony” for several months. He said the committee would begin proceedings to try to force them to testify if they refuse to appear. Comer’s statement came just hours after Democrats released dozens of photos from Epstein’s estate, including images of Clinton and President Donald Trump.

The Senate failed to get anywhere on health care this week. Now it’s the House’s turn. Speaker Mike Johnson is rushing to compile a package of bills to address growing health care costs. The House legislation is not expected to include an extension of enhanced tax credits that make health insurance more affordable in the Affordable Care Act marketplace. Those tax breaks are expiring at the end of this year. Johnson said Republicans’ goal is to reduce premiums for all Americans, not just those enrolled in Obamacare plans. But going Johnson’s route has left vulnerable House Republicans representing key battleground districts in a tough spot.

Trump administration delays decision on federal protections for monarch butterflies

The Trump administration has delayed a decision on whether to extend federal protections to monarch butterflies indefinitely. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife service announced in December 2024 that it planned to add the beloved pollinator to the threatened species list by the end of 2025. But the Trump administration quietly listed the effort as a “long-term action” in a report on the status of federal regulatory efforts in September. It’s unclear why. The Center for Biological Diversity has been leading the push to list the monarch. The center’s endangered species co-director, Tierra Curry, says the delay wasn’t unexpected since it can take a decade or more to add a species to the list.

Every year the annual National Finals Rodeo draws thousands to Las Vegas for two weeks of rodeo competitions. This year, a contagious horse virus loomed over the festivities, resulting in some changes to curb the spread of the virus. The equine herpesvirus can cause neurologic symptoms among horses, and in some serious cases can result in death. Rodeo organizers, horse boarding facilities and owners took extra precautions this year to curb the spread of the outbreak. Nevada required entry permits for all horses, and rodeos required daily temperature checks and stricter cleaning protocols. Some horse owners chose to bring fewer horses this year, while others decided not to come at all.
