Soon no Pearl Harbor survivors will be alive. People turn to other ways to learn about the bombing

Survivors of the 1941 Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor have long been the center of a remembrance ceremony held each year on the military base’s waterfront. But today only 12 are still alive. All are centenarians, and this year none is able to make the pilgrimage to Hawaii to mark the event, scheduled for Sunday. That means no one attending will have firsthand memories of having served during the attack, which killed more than 2,300 troops and catapulted the U.S. into World War II. The development comes as the survivors fade from the scene and their descendants and the public increasingly turn to other ways to learn about the bombing.

Duke beats No. 16 Virginia 27-20 in overtime for first outright ACC championship since 1962

Duke has won its first outright Atlantic Coast Conference title since 1962 and thrown the College Football Playoff into chaos. Darian Mensah connected with Jeremiah Hasley for a 1-yard touchdown on a fourth-down play in overtime, and the unranked Blue Devils held on to beat No. 16 Virginia 27-20 in the ACC championship game on Saturday night. The Blue Devils are unlikely to make the playoff field with their 8-5 record, opening the door for a second Group of Five team — likely James Madison — to make it. Duke last won a share of the ACC regular-season title in 1989. Virginia would have made the playoff with a win.

No. 2 Indiana beats No. 1 Ohio St. 13-10 to end Big Ten title drought, lock up top playoff seed

Fernando Mendoza’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sarratt gave No. 2 Indiana the lead midway through the third quarter and the Hoosiers’ stingy defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way to beat No. 1 Ohio State 13-10 for their first Big Ten championship since 1967 while likely locking up the top seed in the College Football Playoff. The Hoosiers extended the best record in school history to 13-0, and are poised to claim the No. 1 spot in The Associated Press Top 25 for the first time ever. They did it by snapping a 30-game losing streak to the Buckeyes that stretched to 1988 and by ending major college football’s longest winning streak at 16 games. Ohio State dropped to 12-1 overall after missing a 29-yard field goal with 2:48 to play.

Fans of other schools rejoice at ACC title game as Duke win increases CFP uncertainty

Duke’s overtime win against No. 16 Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game attracted its share of curious onlookers, given the league’s uncertain footing for College Football Playoff bids. The five-loss Blue Devils are unranked in the CFP. That raises at least the potential that the ACC could get shut out of the 12-team playoff. Sun Belt champion James Madison could secure the last automatic bid that goes to the five highest-ranked conference champions. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips had said this week that his league deserved two bids: one for No. 12 Miami as an at-large team and one for Saturday’s title-game winner.

A dismal performance in the SEC title games puts Alabama’s playoff hopes in jeopardy

Alabama may have played itself out of the College Football Playoff. With a dismal performance that surely raises serious doubts about its postseason worthiness, the 10th-ranked Crimson Tide were dominated by No. 3 Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game in Atlanta. The 28-7 loss was sure to raise the hopes of Notre Dame and Miami, both of which went into the weekend on the playoff bubble with no chance to further improve their resumes before the selection committee choses the 12-team field on Sunday. It figures to a restless night for Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer and his players.

No. 3 Georgia ends No. 10 Alabama’s hold on rivalry, beats Crimson Tide 28-7 to win SEC championship

No. 3 Georgia has solidified its position for a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff and beaten Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game for the first time. The Bulldogs pounded the 10th-ranked Crimson Tide 28-7 on Saturday behind three touchdown passes from Gunner Stockton. Georgia had been 0-4 against Alabama in the SEC title game and 1-7 against the Crimson Tide under coach Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs earned their fourth SEC title under Smart and 16th overall. The lopsided loss means Alabama will have to  worry about its standing with the College Football Playoff committee.

Jones, No. 2 Montana State topple Yale 21-13 to advance to FCS quarterfinals

Adam Jones ran for 107 yards and a touchdown and second-ranked Montana State beat Yale 21-13 to advance to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs. The Bobcats will host the winner between Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin. Yale reduced its deficit to 21-13 with 2:01 remaining when Josh Pitsenberger ran it in from the 6 with 2:09 remaining to end a five-play, 54-yard drive. After forcing a three-and-out, Yale took the ball with 59 seconds left and no timeouts. Dante Reno’s 18-yard completion to Pitsenberger proved to be the only positive yardage gained on the drive. A series of desperation laterals by Yale ended with Montana State’s Zac Crews recovering the ball at the Bulldogs’ 3 as time expired.

National Park Service drops free admission on MLK Day, Juneteenth while adding Trump’s birthday

The National Park Service will no longer offer free admission to Americans on Martin Luther King Jr. Day or Juneteenth, but will waive admission costs on President Donald Trump’s birthday. The change was announced late last month, one of several new National Park Service admission policies that include higher entry fees for international visitors. Trump’s birthday, June 14, is also Flag Day. It’s the latest example of the Trump administration downplaying America’s history of slavery and the fight for civil rights as well as the president using his position for self-promotion.

Texas Tech wins Big 12 title and likely first-round CFP bye with 34-7 win over BYU

Texas Tech linebacker Ben Roberts had two interceptions after halftime and the No. 5 Red Raiders won the Big 12 championship with 34-7 victory over BYU. The win Saturday almost certainly locks up a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff for the 12-1 Red Raiders, who entered the game No. 4 in the CFP rankings. Tech also has its first Big 12 title. Behren Morton, who didn’t play in Tech’s only loss at Arizona State, threw for two touchdowns to Cody Eakin. The only losses by 11-2 BYU are to the Red Raiders, but the 11th-ranked Cougars will not make the playoff after four turnovers in the second half.

Judge rejects Trump administration’s bid to toss lawsuit challenging Guantánamo migrant detentions

A federal judge has rejected a request from the Trump administration to toss a lawsuit challenging the detention of migrants at the U.S. Navy base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. In a ruling Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Sparkle L. Sooknanan denied the federal government’s motion to dismiss the case and has set a hearing for next week for both sides to discuss next steps in this case. President Donald Trump in January announced his administration would use a detention center at Guantánamo to hold tens of thousands of the “worst criminal aliens,” as part of his wider immigration crackdown.

Sheriff hunting for the last of 3 inmates who escaped from a Louisiana jail

Authorities are hunting for the last of three inmates who escaped from a Louisiana jail after removing concrete blocks from a deteriorating wall. St. Landry Parish sheriff’s Maj. Mark LeBlanc said detectives were still searching Saturday for 24-year-old Keith Eli, who had been jailed on a charge of second-degree murder. Officials say Eli was among three inmates who escaped Wednesday by removing concrete blocks from a wall after wearing away the degrading mortar that held those blocks together. Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz said one of the escapees,  Jonathan Jevon Joseph, was captured without incident Friday. Police say the third inmate, Joseph Allen Harrington, killed himself Thursday when a tip helped police find him at a home.

Yormark was speaking before the Big 12 championship game. Congress was on track to vote on the SCORE Act before the effort failed for now in the U.S. House of Representatives. Yormark says he supports revenue sharing but not unregulated spending on players.

Trump administration plays up pipe bomb suspect’s arrest. Jan. 6 violence goes unmentioned

Top law enforcement officials in the Trump administration had a clear message when they announced the arrest of a man charged with placing pipe bombs outside political party headquarters in Washington on Jan. 5, 2021. The message was that people coming to the nation’s capital to attack citizens and institutions of democracy would be held accountable. Yet Justice Department leaders who announced the arrest Thursday were silent about the violence that had taken place when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol and clashed with police on Jan. 6, 2021, one day after the pipe bombs were discovered.

The San Diego city attorney’s office has agreed to pay $30 million to the family of a 16-year-old youth who was fatally shot by police last January in what would be one of the largest settlements of a police-involved killing case in U.S. history. Konoa Wilson was Black, and the family alleges the shooting was an act of racial violence. The San Diego City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed settlement Tuesday. If approved, it would top the $27 million the city of Minneapolis agreed to pay the family of George Floyd.

That was nearly a year before Detroit exited the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. City Council President Mary Sheffield will succeed Duggan, taking office in January. Sheffield says she plans to build on his success and ensure “Detroit’s progress reaches every block and every family.”

The Supreme Court weighs another step in favor of broad presidential power sought by Trump

Chief Justice John Roberts has led the Supreme Court’s conservative majority on a steady march of increasing the power of the presidency. And that began well before Donald Trump’s time in the White House. The justices could take the next step in a case being argued Monday that calls for the overturning of a unanimous 90-year-old decision that limits executive authority. The court’s conservatives already have allowed Trump to fire almost everyone he’s wanted to in his second term. That’s despite the court’s 1935 decision that prohibits the president from removing the heads of independent agencies without cause.
