Jahmyr Gibbs rushes for 3 TDs and Lions get much-needed 44-30 win over Cowboys

Jahmyr Gibbs and the Detroit Lions have beaten the Dallas Cowboys to help their playoff chances. Gibbs ran three touchdowns in Thursday night’s 44-30 win. Gibbs’ final score was a 13-yarder with 2:19 left that sealed a much-needed win for the Lions. Detroit avoided losing consecutive games for the first time in more than than three years. The Cowboys had surged into postseason contention with a three-game winning streak. But against the Lions, the NFL’s top-ranked offense had to lean on powerful kicker Brandon Aubrey too much, and Dallas’ revitalized defense was humbled.

Merab Dvalishvili aims to extend winning streak against Petr Yan in UFC 323

Merab Dvalishvili is a substantial favorite to beat Petr Yan and retain his bantamweight belt in UFC 323 on Saturday night. The 34-year-old Dvalishvili enters on a 14-match winning streak and is 21-4. A victory over the 32-year-old Yan would move Dvalishvili into a tie with Kamaru Usman for the third-longest streak in UFC history. The record holders are Anderson Silva and Islam Makhachev with 16 each. Dvalishvili and Yan have a history of verbal sparring, but Yan has been mostly respectful in the lead-up to this fight.

Lifeguards rescue dog swept out to sea by rip current off San Diego coast

A pup that was swept out to sea by a rip current must be feeling doggone lucky after her unlikely rescue off the San Diego coast. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department says in a social media post that Sadie stole away from a home where her owners were staying last month. Officials say that while her owners tracked the black Labrador retriever-mix down the coast using an Airtag on her collar, surfers in Ocean Beach alerted lifeguards that a dog had been swept into the rip current near the jetty. After being told the search would only last 10 more minutes, a lifeguard spotted Sadie and she was rescued. Her owners say they’re forever grateful.

US and Kenya sign first of what are expected to be dozens of ‘America First’ global health deals

The Trump administration has signed the first in what are expected to be dozens of “America First” global health agreements that prioritize combating infectious diseases in countries deemed to be aligned with the president’s broader foreign policy goals. The five-year, $2.5 billion agreement was signed Thursday by Kenyan President William Ruto and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to replace a patchwork of previous agreements that had traditionally been run by the U.S. Agency for International Development until it was dismantled earlier this year. A number of other African countries are expected to sign similar agreements by year’s end. But Nigeria and South Africa are not expected to be among that group due to political differences with Trump.

Trump administration to direct more water to California farms

The Trump administration will start sending more water to California farmers in the state’s crop-rich Central Valley. The move comes out of an executive order Trump signed in January. California officials and environmentalists are pushing back on the plan. They say it could threaten water delivery to the rest of the state and would harm salmon and other fish. The plan released Thursday lays out rules for operating the Central Valley Project. It is a vast system of dams and canals that supplies water to central and southern California.

Garber doesn’t rule out relegation in MLS but makes clear it’s years or decades away

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber has not ruled out adopting relegation and promotion. However, he emphasizes that such a decision is years or decades away. MLS launched in 1996 with 10 teams and currently has 30 in a closed system. Garber says relegation doesn’t work for MLS due to the significant investments owners have made. The United Soccer League plans to start a top-tier league in 2027-28 with a promotion/relegation system. Garber, who turned 68 in October, has been commissioner since 1999. He agreed to a contract through the 2027 season and says he hasn’t thought about staying beyond that.

Melania Trump lights the National Christmas Tree after president counts down

First lady Melania Trump has lit the National Christmas Tree on a chilly night in the nation’s capital. At the annual tree lighting on the Ellipse, just south of the White House, President Donald Trump told the crowd, “The first lady is going to do the honors.” He counted down from five to zero. Melania then stepped forward and pressed a button that made the tree behind them sparkle with gold-toned lights. “It’s a beauty,” the president said. The event featured performances by rock legends the Beach Boys, Christian music singer Matthew West and country artists Gabby Barrett, Jon Pardi, Alana Springsteen, Brett Young and Warren Zeiders.

US military conducts strike on another suspected drug boat as probe into the first strike begins

U.S. Southern Command says it has conducted another strike against a small boat in the eastern Pacific Ocean, following a pause of almost three weeks. It is the 22nd strike the U.S. military has carried out against boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean that the Trump administration claimed were trafficking drugs. There were four casualties in Thursday’s strike, according to the social media post, bringing the death toll of the campaign to at least 87 people. In a video that accompanied the announcement, a small boat can be seen moving across the water before it is suddenly consumed by a large explosion. The video then zooms out to show the boat covered in flames and billowing smoke.

NASCAR chairman Jim France accused of stonewalling teams in antitrust case

The attorney for two teams suing NASCAR has described series chairman Jim France as a “brick wall” in negotiations over a new revenue-sharing model. The case involves 23XI Racing, owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, and Front Row Motorsports. They are the only teams that refused to sign new charter agreements in September 2024. Charters guarantee a spot in races and a payout from NASCAR. The teams argue the deal lacked their requests and was presented as “take it or leave it.” NASCAR spent over two years in negotiations, but the teams claim the final offer was unsatisfactory.

Court decision calling for end to National Guard deployment in DC paused by appeals court

A U.S. District Court decision to end the deployment of National Guard members to Washington, D.C., is on hold. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit temporarily paused the lower court ruling that had called for an end to the deployment of troops. The stay pauses the implementation of U.S. District Court Judge Jia Cobb’s November 20 opinion and order. Cobb had concluded that President Donald Trump’s military takeover in Washington illegally intrudes on local officials’ authority to direct law enforcement in the district. National Guard members have been in the city since August, the result of an executive order by President Donald Trump to help combat crime.

MLB players union gathers to prepare for potentially contentious labor negotiations in 2026

The Major League Baseball Players’ Association has gathered Arizona to discuss the future of the game and look ahead to a possible lockout next December. Japanese stars headed by Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto have sparked record international interest, in-game attendance was up in 2025 for the third straight season, and a set of rule changes that began in 2023 season has produced a faster-paced game that’s been widely lauded. But MLB also has a widening payroll disparity that is a point of contention. The Dodgers have spent roughly $890 million building back-to-back World Series champions while the Athletics have spent less than $150 million over the same period.

Supreme Court allows Texas to use a congressional map favorable to Republicans in 2026

The Supreme Court is allowing the challenged Texas congressional redistricting plan to be used in next year’s election, despite a lower-court ruling that the map likely discriminates on the basis of race. The map is favorable to Republicans and was pushed by President Donald Trump. The justices acted Thursday on an emergency request from Texas for quick action because qualifying in the new districts already has begun, with primary elections in March. The Supreme Court’s order puts the 2-1 ruling blocking the map on hold at least until after the high court issues a final decision in the case. The effort to preserve a slim Republican majority in the House in 2026 touched off a nationwide redistricting battle.

Missouri court orders new wording for ballot measure seeking to restrict abortion rights

A Missouri appeals court panel has ordered new wording for a ballot measure seeking to roll back abortion rights in the state. The court ruled Thursday that Missouri voters must be informed the amendment would repeal “reproductive healthcare rights” that they approved just one year ago. The decision marks another twist in Missouri’s ongoing battle over abortion laws, which have shifted since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The Republican-led Legislature placed a new amendment on a 2026 ballot that would allow abortions only in specific cases. The appeals court found the previous ballot summary misleading and imposed new wording.

It also calls for the creation of a suite of AI resources that can be used across the department. Experts said the bold plan was worth celebrating but warned that the government’s embrace of AI tools shouldn’t come at the expense of safety.

Marco Odermatt of Switzerland has won the downhill season-opener, beating American Ryan Cochran-Siegle in a World Cup race on a tricky but shorter Birds of Prey course. Odermatt finished in 1 minute, 29.84 seconds to surpass Cochran-Siegle by .30 seconds. Norway’s Adrian Smiseth Sejersted took third. The finish line was moved up the hill due to a lack of snow to properly place the safety netting. Odermatt, who has won the last two overall World Cup downhill titles, attacked the steeper sections and carried enough speed through the flatter part to earn the win. Cochran-Siegle became the first U.S. ski racer to earn a World Cup downhill podium spot at Beaver Creek since 2014.

House Republicans plans to vote on a bill regulating college sports has been scrapped due to divisions within their caucus. There are bipartisan concerns over the influence that the SCORE Act would give the NCAA and its most powerful programs. The bill seemed to be on track for passage this summer but now sees its chances of passage at all in its current form dwindling. Democratic leadership has pushed House members to vote against it and some Republicans have been increasingly vocal. The NCAA and Division I conferences portray the legislation as codifying the rules created by the multibillion-dollar lawsuit settlement that allows college players to be paid, providing clarity that supporters say is long-needed.

Trump argues that affordability worries are a Democratic “hoax” and that people need to hear his perspective to change their minds. It shows the dilemma faced by Trump as he tries to take credit for rewiring the U.S. economy with his large tariff hikes and extension of income tax cuts while blaming Biden for the increase nationwide in inflation rates under Trump’s watch.  Inflation is currently tracking at 3% annually, up from 2.3% in April when he rolled out his tariffs.

A quiet corner of Arkansas has become a hot spot for US immigration crackdown, AP finds

A corner of Arkansas best known as home to Walmart headquarters has emerged as a little-known hot spot in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement crackdown. That’s according to an Associated Press review of arrest data, jail records, police reports and interviews with residents, immigration lawyers and watchdogs. Benton County offers a window into what the future may hold in places where local and state authorities cooperate broadly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Records show the partnership has caught some violent criminals but also repeatedly turned misdemeanor arrests into the first steps toward deportations. The arrests have split apart families and spread fear through the immigrant community.

Trump’s immigration message is colliding with his welcome to World Cup fans

President Donald Trump will be taking center stage at the World Cup draw as he rolls out the welcome mat for teams and fans from around the globe. But Friday’s draw at the Kennedy Center in Washington comes at a time when the Republican president has hardened his rhetoric against immigrants. His administration is looking at expanding restrictions on travel to the U.S. for people from 19 countries. Critics say that messaging undercuts the message of unity that the World Cup represents. The U.S. says it’s working to ensure fans from other countries get expedited visas so they can attend next summer’s tournament.

US filings for jobless benefits fall to 191,000, lowest since September of 2022

U.S. applications for unemployment benefits fell to their lowest level in more than three years last week, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision on interest rates. The number of Americans applying for jobless benefits for the week ending Nov. 29 fell to 191,000 from the previous week’s 218,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. That’s the lowest level since September 24, 2022, when claims came in at 189,000. Analysts surveyed by the data provider FactSet had forecast initial claims of 221,000. Applications for unemployment aid are viewed as a proxy for layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the job market.

New York Times suing Pentagon over Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s new press rules

The New York Times has filed a lawsuit to stop the Pentagon from imposing new rules on journalists who cover the military. Most mainstream news outlets refused to agree to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s policy this fall, resulting in them losing credentials to work in the Pentagon. The Times will argue that the rules violate free speech and gives Hegseth unlawful discretion to ban reporters whose work he does not like. The Pentagon welcomed its newly-constituted press corps, consisting primarily of outlets friendly to President Donald Trump, for a briefing this week and denounced the journalsts who left as “propagandists.”

FBI makes arrest in investigation into pipe bombs placed in DC on eve of Jan. 6 riot, AP source says

The FBI has made an arrest in its nearly 5-year-old investigation into who placed pipe bombs in Washington before the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. That’s according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday. The arrest marks the first time investigators have settled on a suspect in an act that had long vexed law enforcement and spawned conspiracy theories. The pipe bombs were placed on Jan. 5, 2021, near the offices of the Democratic and Republican national committees. Nobody was hurt before the bombs were rendered safe, but the FBI said both devices could have been lethal.

Austin McNamara’s rise as Jets’ punting ‘sniper’ began by watching YouTube videos as a kid

Austin McNamara’s rise as a top punter for the New York Jets began with YouTube videos. Growing up in Arizona, he loved soccer and basketball but tried football in high school. With a background in soccer, he naturally gravitated toward kicking. He and his dad watched countless videos to learn the craft. Now, McNamara ranks among the NFL’s best punters, with impressive stats that has put him in the Pro Bowl conversation. He joined the Jets in March after being cut by Cincinnati last year. Coach Aaron Glenn says the Jets call him a sniper because he can regularly flip the field for the team with his punting consistency.

Affordable Care Act premiums are set to spike. A new poll shows enrollees are already struggling

A new survey of Affordable Care Act health insurance enrollees finds that many are already struggling with the high cost of health care. Most of the more than 1,300 enrollees surveyed say they anticipate that their health costs will be impacted next year if Congress doesn’t extend COVID-era tax credits that will otherwise expire at the end of the year. Thursday’s poll from the health care research nonprofit KFF finds that marketplace enrollees overwhelmingly support an extension of the subsidies. The survey found this group is more likely to blame President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress than Democrats if the tax credits are left to expire.
